MAILBAG Comments on a good cup of Joe I 'm calling regarding Joseph Bell's column, "Coffee talk Wlth Wendy Leece gets crowd- ed· (The Bell Cwve, Aug. 13). He made some very negative comments dbout a visitor, a third person who was having lunch or talking with him and Wendy. He ridiculed the fdct that this other man said that Catholics aren't Christians, and that in fact is a lrue statement. Catholics are not Chnstians, and if Bell would redd his Bible or study his Bible, he would see that many of the Catholic teachings are counter to what the Bible tcdches, and so I Uunk he's out of lme to make those comments. SHIRLEY KOCH-SMITH Newport Beach 1 1ust wanted to comment pos- itively on Joseph Bell's column - on his coffee with Wendy Leece. GARY BARMORE Pastor, Fairview Community Church Costa Mesa Worried about Fred withdrawals I am always pleased when J open your paper these days and find a column from Fred Martin regarding his new life in Col- orado and how he and his wife are coping with their move. One is about who's using John Wayne Airport ("South County big user of airport,• Aug. 15), and of course, I don't know what all this hogwash is about. Anybody take a right on the toll road, and you will notice that South County is going to have a million people, proba bly by 2000, not 20 10, a nd they do need the airport. We need the airport. We all need the airport. So, I don't know what the nonsense is all about. Anyway, that's my com- ment on that. In response to Steve Smith's column, yeah, Steve-•students who want to learn Spanish get nada • (Aug. 15). I have been an educator for 30 years and a stu- dent for probably 20 years, and I'm still trying to learn. 1 want to learn Spanish , but I'm in total accord with Steve Smith's plea to have bilingual education in the elementary schools, where Eng- lish-speaking students can learn to speak Spanish and maybe even German or French or Latin or Vietnamese or Japanese. But it's a far cry from true edu- cation not to be able to have a second language for our English- speaking students. I think we need to instill Spanish in the ele- mentary levels, and that is the time when students learn the best. Five-year-old kids, 6-year- old kids will be speaking it like natives in six months, I guarantee it. I know because back East, it was done in the olden days when I was a child. We learned French in elementary school. and 1 can still speak it like a Parisian if I have to. So I think we really need it and I say bravo to Smith. Keep READERS RESPOND · More on Murphy resignation THE ISSUE: Residents . opinions are split on city manager's performance. The wrong person resigned ("Shock waves at City Hall, 11 Aug. 13). I can think of three or four others who would be less missed than Kevin Murphy. PHIL SANSONE Corona del Mar I think that the reason be probably resigned was because there 's obviously some scan- dalous activity happening there at City Hall, and he wants to get out before the beat comes down. By the fact that the members said, "No comment" ... or did not re turn their phone calls ... leads me to believe that definitely there's some improp- er activity going on there at City Hall, and I think Kevin Murphy wanted to get out before it came down. Bill JOHNSON Newport Beach I'm a property owner for a couple of properties in Corona del Mar. I have been working closely with the d ty of Newport Beach. About a year ago, the dty decided to take away my parking space in front of my property. Right now, I'm in liti- gation with the city because of doing that. The reason behind it is ~e !tty is so very arrogant and'did not return phone calls and did not communicate with me, except for Kevin Murphy. And h e does g enuinely care about property owners, and be returned my phone call, and I'm against the dty for letting Mur- phy go. He's really a good guy. KAM YEE Corona del Mar My comment is that Kevin Murphy's resignation is a good thing for the city. He's been be- hind pushing plans on the penin- sula that they don't want, and if he needs help packing, I'd be more than happy to help him pack. LOUISE FUNDENBERG him writing. He's wonderful. JO BLAOC-JAC The survey results regarding who is using John Wayne Airpo is not a surprise. There has been enormous ' growth in South County. What 1 find particularly interesting is that 41.1 % of the passengers flI from South County, while only 9.9% are from Newport Beach, yet South County wants John · Wayne Airport to expand so tha they do not have the burden ot any air or ground traffic in their community. I tind this very hypocritical. Isn't it fair that the El Toro Marine Corps air base remain an airport so that those wbo be nefit from air travel also assume some of the responslb' ities? Artz finished second in Orange County, among kids born in 1986, in the aw and 1,500 and was fourth in ~ 400 and 800 \rt the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation meet. including qualifiers from throughout the region. Corona del Mar resident Rod Turner, 34, had waited nine years for his chance .to compete. This year, Turner's number came up in the applicant lottery and he will be traveling to Hawaii for the Oct. 3 event. Competitors often train 18-24 hours a week for ~ix to eight months to build ijle endurance and stamina required to complete the event. The race began in 1978 with only 15 competitors, but grew rapidly. By 1983, qualifying pro- cedures were implemented and a select number of spots were held for applicants who hadn't quali- fied. In 1991, he was a finisher a the Alcatraz l~and 'lttathlon. Th following year, he finished event known as The Death Ride a 100-mile road bike race .. tha descends 15,000 feet. Artz, competing in the Midget D!Vlsion (ages 11-12), qualified m eight events for the recent USA Track and Field Youth Nationals. But, able to enter only three, he added the pentathlon, which doesn't count against his allotment, to the 400 meters, the 800 and the 4 X 800 relay. Artz's pentathlon finish was even more impressive, considering the hole he was in after two events. He was second at a qualifying meet for the Junior Olympics in Los Angeles and matched that finish in a southwest regional qualifying meet in Las Vegas, from which the top three advanced to nationals. The lronman consists of a 2.4- mile ocean swim. 112-mile bike ride and 26,.2-mile marathon run and participants have 17 hours to This year, more than 3,000 hopefuls submitted applications, which made the odds of getting Turner, a swim coach, ha waited a long time for this oppor tunity. But, it was all worth it. "It' still recognized as the ultimc\t athletic accomplishment,• Turne said. "I enjoy the camaraderie o 1,500 men and women all strlvin for the same goal.• "We sat down with his (Irvine Youth Track Club) coach, Ron Simon and decided, since Kevin 1s such a good general athlete (he also competes in flag football, basketball, swimming and <.occer). we might as well see if we can take those strengths and use them in the pentathlon, H said Ken Artz, Kevin's father. "I had a bad (80-meter) hurdles race, H said Artz, whose time of 14.6 was well off his typical effort. He then went 22-1 in the shot put, his worst event, and was in 11th place with three events remaining. While his versatility helps him in the pentathlon, Artz is handicapped, according to his father, by placing so many sports on his athletic pallet. YOUTH SIGllUPS Select team openings at CdM for 13-14s llf 11111111 The plan seems to be working, as Kevin Artz, competing m only lus second pentathlon, finished fifth at the USA Track and Field nationals lhe first week of July m Spokane, Wash. Ken Artz said Kevin's pen- tathlon marks in the high jump and long jump would have placed in the top five of those . individual events. "I had a bad start. so I thought I did really well to make my way back to fifth," said Kevin, who "He has so many sports going, he can't keep up with most of the kids he faces at these national track meets who train year-round,• Ke.n explained. "For Kevin to finish in the top three (nationally) in a running event, he'd have to train year-round.
