Back aJ).d forth we flew for what seemed like hours. No San Blas. By tbis time we didn't have enough gas to go back to Mazat- lan, so John decided to try for Puerto Vallarta. We made it, just in time. We had about a cup full of gas left and it was getting dark when John spotted what looked like a ~asture in the jungle. Some kids Chased the cows away and we landed in what turned out to be the Puerto Vallarta airport. Puerto Vallarta was a tiny fish- ing village. We were practically the onl · os in town. That which later bec~e Gringo Gulch was simply a gulch. There were two dingy little hotels and kids cooked fresh fish for you right on the beach. We fished and swam for a lew days, then new home without incident. However, there was in Puerto Vallarta a new restaurant. We noticed John taking quite an interest in it. He would walk around, looking at it from every angle. The most noticeable aspect of the place was that it was built of 14,va rock and seemed to hug the earth. A few months later, John took Jim Gray as a partner and built the first Reubens which looked strangely like that restaurant in Puerto Vallarta. The Reubens chain was off and running. Fountain. Valley, going for 3 for 3 • Right fielder Josh Graves paves way for Costa Mesa American Little League Junior All-Stars in a come-from-behind 4-3 victory. By Jim Walters, Daily Pilot WESTMINSTER -If Josh Graves' last name didn't sound ominous enough to Fountain Valley heading into Friday's opening junior division game (ages 13-14), it sure should leave a lasting memory through the elimination round of the District 62 Little League All-Star Tournament. Graves, and bis Costa Mesa American teammates, came from a 3-2 deficit with single runs in the bottom of the sixth and the seventh innings to escape with a 4-3 win and a Fri- day d~te in the winner's bracket against Seaview. Game time is 5 p.m. at the same site -Johnson Middle School in Westminster. Graves, who went 3 for 3, doubled to center field to lead off the sixth inning and moved over to third on a wild pitch. when 'n'avis liimble smacked a ground ball to the left of out- stretched third baseman Dave Adams. Jeff Stanton was back- ing the play up at short, but be never got a clear look at the ball as Adams screened the play and he couldn't make a throw as the tying run scored. Charlie Amburgey opened the seventh by getting aboard on an error by Stanton who let the ball bounce off bis glove into left. Amburgey was replaced by pinch-runner Ricky Flores who promptly stole second and went to third on Steven Shores' one- out base hit to center to put run- ners at the corners. Shores stole second and catcher Galel Fajardo worked the count for a walk to load the bases for Graves. Graves, batting from the left side, got a hold of a high 1-0 fastball and ripped it to the base of the wall in left to easily bring Flores home with the winning run. "I just wanted to drive the ball," Graves said of his game- winner. He also singled in the second and scored Costa Mesa's first run as the all-stars took a 2- 0 lead. Starting pitcher, Brent Stevens, who drew a· walk, scored the second run on a sac- rifice fiy by the No. 9 hitter George Hanold. Stevens breezed through the first three innings on the mound, facing only the mini- mum number of nine batters. The fourth inning was anoth- er story as Fountain Valley took a 3-2 lead, sending seven bat- ters to the plate. The. big blows were a two-run triple by Tony Martin and Stanton's RBI-single to right that brought him home. "That was solid defense, except that one inning,• Man-· ager Chris Brannick told bis team in the-dugout after the game. "Every one of you did your job. Really, fantastic." "Wasn't that a super perfor- mance by Brent?" Brannick asked not expecting an answer. "Awesome.• . Other than the fourth inning, Stevens held Fountain Valley to . . innings. He struck out three and walked only one batter while going the distance for the win. #Brent has relied on a curve all year, but we've been telling him to go to the fastball more,• Brannick said. "He did today and he was ahead of every bat- ter. You could see he was relaxed and confident out there.w Stevens' performance also allowed Costa Mesa to rest it's bullpen. Brannick has the choice of starting Graves or Bryan Yourex on Friday. He's leaning toward Yourex, but has- n't made the final decision at this point. Costa Mell 4, Ftn.
