IDlf Pb NEWPORT-MESA -School officials have wide-ranging atti- tudes toward the prospect of a computer blackout in 2000: con- cern that looks fike panic and con- fidence that looks like apathy. For the past several years, the school district has been updating its computer systems and software. Many of the changes were not just intended to make the systems immune to year 2000 problems, but it has worked out that way anyway, district officials said. Experts are predicting wide~ spread chaos when the new mil- lennium begins because comput- ers and software that use six-digit dates may confuse 2000 for 1900. ·we have looked into wbat the exposure is, and we feel it's mini- mal,• said David Dow, the district's assooate director of management information services. "There are very few . problems anticipated with the year 2000." Added Mike Fine, the assistan'-' superintendent of busmess ser- vices, "We've been changing th9't system for other reasons. Hopkins Former OCC admJ.rustrator Frank 0 Hopkms died of nat- ural causes Monday morrung at his Corona del Mar home. He was 89 Mr. Hopkms was born m Los Angeles 1Jl 1909 and worked as a teacher m the Brea-Olinda Unified School District in the late 1930s. He was the district's superintPndent from 1946 to 1965. He spent the last years of his actldemic career, 1965 to 1973, as vice chancellor of OCC. He was responsible for obtaining grants for new building pro- jects at the Costa Mesa cam- pus. "He was in charge of the long-range facilities planrung, • said bis son, Gregg Hopkins of · Washington, D.C. "You can see he did a great job. He was a well-known administrator in Orange County, as you can tell from the number of years he worked here.• After retiring from OCC, Mr. Hopkins continued working wtth World· Campus Afloat, a program that takes college stu- dents on tours of the world by ship. Surviving Mr. Hopkins are his wife, Thelma; two children, Gregg Hopkins and Melinda Cohelan; and one grandchild, Anne, 14. A private funeral ser- vice will be held for the f amlly.
