By Carolyn Miller, Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -A protest that started years ago with picket signs and pointed fin. gers may end with a handshake. The lengthy clispute over property ownership between Bayside Village mobile home park seniors, the Bayside land- holding company and the leasing company, DeAnza Newport Mobile Estates, may finally be resolved thanks to a settlement filed Friday in bankruptcy court. Under the settlement, DeAnza would buy the entire Bayside Vil- lage including the 270 mobile- home spaces and 220 boat slips. The purchase would save the 60 shareholders in the landl}olding company, Bayside Land Co., from potentially losing their property through foreclosure by their lenders. "We now have the framework (or a settlement of all the disputes which will result in happy resi- dents, a happy land company, dnd us being happy.• said f\.1ichael Geliand, the president of DeAnza, the Beverly Hills com- pany that has leased the Bayside Village since the early 1970s. While the settlement is a major step on the road to rapport, it still has to be finalized and approved by the court, the creditors and the land-holders. The settlement is expected to be conduded by next March, Gelfand said. David Brownell, the president of the Bayside Village Home a member for the Bayside Land Co., said the settlement would not only rescue the landholders from financial ruin, but eliminate ill will between residents anct DeAnza, stabilize property values. and make the leases alfordable for everyone. "The settlement would solve a great rnany problems in the park, and the quality of We would be improved," Brownell said. In an attempt to expand musically, Mar- shall tried his luck on a trumpet at age 9 and progressed to a baritone horn as a teenager. But singing proved to be his long-term love. He led his junior high choir, sang in church, and paid his rent in college with money earned from his job as the Pepper- dine University band manager. Mr. Thornton left OCC in 1957 to serve as president of a Florida community college. He later served as professor of education at San Jose State University; he also helped reor- ganize the state of Hawaii's community college system. Mr. Thornton married Mary Boyce Thornton after both of their spouses p assed away. Mrs. Thornton was previously married to Dudley Boyce, a founding OCC faculty member and first president of Golden West College in Huntington Beach. Mr. Thornton and his wife visited OCC last December and watched as the college dedicat- ed a plaque in his honor out- side the campus' a dministra- tion building. Mr. Thornton also donated $15,000 for a scholarship. Besides his wife, he is sur- vived by his son, Rev. HEMPHILL'S RUGS & CARPETS Mon-Fri 10-6 Sat 10-5 722-7224 230 East 17th St., Costa Mesa T\JESOA'l~ AUGUST 13, 1996 • There's some good work going on in Sacramento Recently I wrote an article in which I kidded our state legislators -80 assemblymen and 40 senators -for their selection of the word Eureka, which means "I have found it," as our state motto. However, in spite of some lumps our legislators have tak- en lately -the budget impasse, ., the Assembly speaker fiasco plus a full indictment here and there -all Sacramento is not bombast and belly laughs. Our legislators are a hard working; dedicated group of .public servants who spend most of their time enacting serious legislation that affects and even · enriches the lives of each of us. For example, Section 421 .5 of our government code, a hefty docwnent of 24 volwnes contaiilfug YOJTif sections, pro- vides that "West Coast Swing" is our official state dance. Obviously they are talking about the Balboa, a distinctive step that separated California dancers from the rest of the dancers of the Swing Era. I am sure that all who danced the Balboa at the Rendezvous Ball- room, the birthplace of the step, should be pleased to dis- cover that the Balboa is further described as •an intricate dance requiring a great deal of coordination, good timing and intelligent application.· I am a little puzzled by that "intelligent application.• Somehow, as I look back at the Balboa days, I missed that intelligent application'aspect of the dance. I think our state legislators really outdid themselves when, in Section 425.3 of that same code, they picked benitoite as our official state gemstone. Only one problem. Being an uncultured slob, I never heard of benitoite but I am sure that all those sophisticated people wearing benitoite rings are proud that our state legislature has picked its favorite g~ as our official gemstone. I do have some reservations about Section 425.8 of that same code, which selects our official state prehistoric artifact although just why we need an official state artifact escapes me. Our 80 assemblymen and 40 senators picked •the chipped stone, bear-shaped eccentric" as our official state prehistoric artifact. I am just a bit puzzled as to just why they felt com- pelled to pick a state historical artifact when there are so many completely normal pre- historic artifacts lying around robe rt gardner from which to pick. Again, I rebel a little at Sec- tion 425.5 of that same code that picks the "dog face butter- fly" as our state insect. Why pfclt a dog face butterffy viffii all those beautiful monarch butterflys flitting around? We also have an official state song. Guess what it is? "I love you, California." How's that for originality? Our official state reptile LS the desert tortoise. What a relief. I was afraid it was going to be a rattlesnake, either a diamond back or a sidewinder and I hate snakes. Our official state historical society is the California St~te Historical Society. Originality is springing out all ewer. To cap the climax of this thrilling exploration into the wonders of the legislative process, just last year our legis- lators picked our state marine fish. They picked the hypsy- pops rubicaundasl It develops that the bypsypops rubicaun- das is the Garibaldi perch. It is a good choice because the Garibaldi is a truly beauti- ful fish. Unhappily, the Garibaldi is rapidly becoming extinct. During the early days of skin, diving before the inven- tion of scuba no one would ever think of spearing a Garibaldi. Admittedly, they are perfect targets, slow and unafraid of man. But a Garibaldi is not a game fish, just scales and bones. However, they present an irresistible target for modern scuba divers with their big, expensive and deadly spear guns. They have to shoot at something and the Garibaldi, as slow targets, are thus facing extinction. • ROBERT GARDNER is a Corona del Mar resident. His column runs Tues- day. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA-Pete Daley of Mesa Verde Country Club was still pacing the cart paths in front of the clubhouse Monday ~ollowing his round in a one- day qualifieP at Mesa Verde for the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. Daley, in the clubhouse with a 5- over-par 76, was on the bubble. Only four players (plus an alternate) would qualify for the Senior Amateur. Daley was tied for fifth with four groups still on the goU course. · Nervous? Place your destiny in someone else's putts. No one in the final groups, however, finished below 77, so Daley was thrust into a nerve-twitching, two-man play- off against Orrin Pollock of Rolling Hills for the lone alternate spot in the Senior Amateur Sept. 7-12 at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass. Pollock, of Vliginia Country Club in Long Beach, advanced by sinking a 20- foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole. "It was luck," Pollock said. •tt wasn't like I was planning on making it. I just wanted to lag it up there and see bow it goes.• Daley and PoJJock both made bogey on 10, the first playoff bole, before they played No. 9. Winning medalist honors was Ed Rieu of Bermuda Dunes Country Club, where he is close with Dave and Sandi Coffer, members of both Bermuda Dunes and Newport Beach Country Club. Rieu, a scratch golfer who won the 1993 and '94 Southern California Senior Amateur, shot 72. Bud Bradley of Santa Maruca, recently crowned the Wilshire Country Club men's dub champion, and Mik~ Bh.un of Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach both shot 73 to quality. Corbin Cherry of Presidio Country Club in San Francisco shot 75 and was the fourth qualifier from the field of 66 players. who needed a 3.8 handicap index or better to quality on the par-71 Mesa Verde course that played 6,553 yards from the modified blue tees. None of the area's four senior ama- teurs qualified. Along with Daley, Wal- ter Burgess (78) of Santa Ana Country Club, Dan Rogers (87) of Newport Beach and Alastair Robertson (88) of Mesa Verde came up short. Rieu, however, apparently hired the right guy to caddie when he selected Mike Zangger of Costa Mesa. •I usually caddie for him, before he fired me before this week," cracked Rieu's wife, Emma. It was Zangger -who grew up playing at Mesa Verde, where his father, Paul, is a longtime member - who suggested to Rieu on the 18th fair- way that he use a 3-iron from 190 yards, instead of a 4-iron. Rieu's approach on the finishing hole landed six feet from the pin, before he drained the putt for birdie. •That last hole, that's what earned him medalist," Emma Rieu said. "He has never been a medalist before (in a qualifier)." Zangger's father asked him i1 he would caddie for Rieu, a longtime friend, during the event. Mike Zangger jumped at the chance, and it was his local knowledge that ultimately put Rieu over the top. ·nus is a good golf course, it always brings everybody to their knees," said Zangger, the No. 1 Flight champion last year in the Will Jordan Classic at Costa Mesa Golf and Country Club, where the 34-year-old Costa M esa police offi- cer is a member of the men's club. "It's a very humbling goU course," he added. "It's one of the best golf courses in Orange County day-in and day-out, because it's so challenging. Then, it's a totally different course when that wind picks up.• Local knowledge didn't seem to help Daley or Robertson. ~vou know the course, but in some instances it might be a disadvantage, because you get relaxed and mess it up,· Daley said. "The fairways are fairly generous, but when you do miss the fairways, the trees can give you a lot of problems," Robertson said. "They're not real wide, but they're reasonable. It's not a tricked-up golf course." RoQertson. a four-year Mesa Verde member, said "that's the worst I've played in probably 10 years." Mesa Verde's Francis Crinella was scheduled to play, but had to withdraw. Phil Mickelson of Steel Canyon Country Club in San Diego, the father of the PGA Tour standout with the same name, shot 85.
