By Julie Ross Cannon, Daily Pilot The books and binders around Scott Paulsen's office are tagged with ayp- tic fragments of yellow legal paper. The personal notes serve as tangible reminders of the thousands of lives the retiring principal has changed during his 34 years in education. M All of the sudden I realized there are so many things I do that isn't written down,• said Paulsen, sitting behind his desk Tues- day at Ensign Intermediate School. How unfair is that?~ Having announced his retirement last week, the 56-year-old icon of the Newport- Mesa Unified School District is busily preparing a written legacy of the educa- tional programs which have lauded his school recognition across the nation. A lot of us were exposed to Lotus Land during World War D and couldn't wait to get back. My family didn't make it until 1959, but moving to California didn't take the Midwest out of me. Par from it. I discovered a long time ago the best way to deal with the excesses of Southern California is to get a periodic Midwestern fix. So for more than 35 years, I've been disproving Thomas WoUe's contention that you can't go home again. And I've just returned from my umpteenth shot of Indiana adrenalin. For the first 15 years my family lived in Newport Beach, we rent- ed our house in the sum.mer and moved into a cottage we owned on a northern Indiana lake. My children were thus raised m two totally different cultural environ- ments: the upper-middle class Orange Coast and rural Indiana. l like to think it was a good -iI somewhat confusing -mix. During those lake years, l would use the morning and evening to write, and we would always play a softball game in the afternoon. Ev~ry day. We kept meticulous records, and vis- itors to the lake were always drafted into playing softball. We sent a good many of these visi- tors home aching in every joint from using muscles they hadn't employed in years. A whole raft of lake children grew up playing our softball game. One of them died. Several went off to Vietnam. Some stayed in Indiana and got factory jobs and raised children. As the players drifted away, the time finally came to enshrine the softball game in memory and move on. When my children were into other pursuits in the summer, we borrowed two of their friends one year for the trip back to Indiana before acknowl- edging this period of our life bad run its course. So we sold the cottage. And at the Last softball game, all the players solemnly signed the beat-up ball and put it under glass. That was more than 25 years ago. T hen in the summer of 1996, two of our softball graduates -one a computer executive in Massachusetts, the other a col- lege professor in Maryland - spent dozens of diligent hours tracking down the softball play- ers and inviting them to a reunion in Columbia City. The game, itseH -once full ot scintillating plays by supple young athletes -was something less than a thing of beauty. The kids who grew up in this game are now in their mid-to-late 40s and some are not in the best of shape. There was a fair amount of hard breathing and dropped fly balls. Their children, who also came to play, were a mixed bag but mostly not up to the early skills of their fathers and mothers. It pleased me that my two grandsons were an exception -and clearly the stars, both afield and at bat. The weekend ~as full of good talk, breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches (someone could make a fortune by mtroducing this delicacy here) and a total absence of the divisive issues that are driving this country today. We did a lot of hanging out that reminded me of the wonderful indolence -an art form that hasn't made it to Southern California -of Indiana summers. When we parted on Sunday afternoon. it was with the unlike- ly hope that we might once again put together the effort to assemble in the same spirit. l stayed on alone for several days to soak Indiana even more deeply into my pores.
