I glance at a movie marquee and I see two : words: •Urban Legend." It's the title of a new movie, but it's also : one of my favorite subjects. As far as the film goes, I have nothing to declare. Haven't seen it, don't know anything about it. But the urban legend thing is what I find fascinating. In case • the term isn't familiar, an urban legend is a story that spreads like wild.fire and then, for reasons·no one ~ntirely understands, is widely accepted as fact. Urban legends can last a week or a year or forever. See if Uus one, which made the rounds a few years ago, rings a bell. A very famous and very large pro athlete steps into a hotel elevator with his very large dog on a leash. There are two elderly women in the elevator who move back as far as they can. When the dog starts to fid- get, the aUtlete says •get down• in a loud voice. "The nervous women behind him dutifully get on thelJ' knees. When the aUtlete realizes what's going on, he is mnrtified and apologizes profuse- ly. Did it really happen? Of course not, but instant urban leg- end nonetheless. Why? Who knows. I heard it at least five times, with the athlete varying from Reggie Jackson to 'fi"oy Alle- man to Shaquille O'Neal. In each case, the storyteller swore it was \-true and, typically, became a lit- COMMllTS & CUllOSITIES Ue defensive when I couldn't hide my ever-present skepticism. The response is usually •No, really, it's true,• and they heard it from a girlfriend who is a close friend of the athlete's ex-wife, etc., etc. ~me wban legends are much more serious than silly and can even become part of our history. Dr. Charles R. Drew was a highly respected African-American physician who developed blood plasma and organized the first blood ban.ks in England during World War D and in the Uruted States for the American Red Cross. His work and dlScoveries saved millions of lives over the years. Dr. Drew died in 1950 after an auto accident in rural North Car- ohna. Ironically, he bled to death outside a segregated clinic that · refused to treat him. An mcredi=- r ble story, and a fd!Se ,one. But it's a tenacious wban legend lt's been repeated in books, speech- es and articles for almost 50 years. The truth iS that the rural clin- ic did what it could, which was very little. Drew did indeed bleed to death, but in transit to a real hospital, which was miles away. His daughter, a former member of the District of Colwn- bia council, has spent years try- ing to dispel the urban legend and refocus attention on ber father's remarkable accomplish- ments Another urban legend is mak- ing the rounds right now all over the country. Typically, a company lunchroom or break area has a notice posted with a picture of a young child and a box or enve- lope beneath it. The little boy or girl desperately needs medical treatment, usually dialysis, but the parents can't afford it and have no health insurance. The notice asks people to pla~e the •pop tops" from soft drink c~ns in the envelope or box because they'll be redeemed for time on a dialysis machine or some other treatment. There have been a number of attempts, usually by reporters, to try to run these sto- nes down, with no success. No one ever knows exactly how the throwawdy pop tops would, or could, be redeemed for meclica.J treatmenr. All the person who posted the notice knows is that he ·or she gives the pop tops to a friehd -who is usually the person who told them about the sick child -who gives them to . another friend. And no one ever knows the little boy or girl or the parents personally. When pressed about where the photocopi~ picture came from, it usually turns out it Wds clipped and copied from a magd- zine article about the child. Ke(•p in mind, these aren't scctms and no one is profiting from them. They are urban legends. acn~pt ed with very little question by otherwise reasonable people. In past Bacl( Bay matcnes. the schools have dis- puted over court delays and sunlight availability and even brought in USTA officials to referee Sea View League matches. ln Thursday's league opener, an eventual 10-8 victory for host Corona del Mar, the top-ranked team in Orange County, the rivals redched another level in terms of bizarre endings. Newport Harbor (5-3), ranked No. 4 m the coun- ty but now with a three-match losing streak heading into a tough Woodbridge contest next Tuesday, cashed in its chips before all the cards had been counted. After CdM's Eva Baudenbacher lost a gruehng second-round set to Newport freshman sensation Natalie Braverman, 6-7 (1-7), the foreign exchange student from Switzerland began to suffer leg cramps. HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TENNIS concerned about Baudenbacher's health. "The match was over," Olson said. "There was no reason to keep Eva on the court when she was cramping. Oefen e is a cooperative effort. East· West combined well to dereat a rusonable three no trump contract on this deaf from a ma1or national event. By partnership agreement. North's bid of l.hree spades was invitational, describing a balanced hand of 18·19 points and five spades. South chose well in electing to play three no trump rather than four spades. At the suit contract declarer had four sure losers virtually no matter what the defense did. TOYOTA 9210 VANS West led a fourth-best heart again t three no trump. Declarer played the queen from dummy ind Ea\t unblocked the ten, Declarer had no safe way to get to hand to lead a spade toward dummy in an ottempt 10 (orcc We~t to win a pade trick, so the king of padcs wu led Now Weit made $Ute of the contr11Ct's defeat by jettisoning the queen. Oeclmr could do no better than concede a spade trick to East, and the Jack of hearts through the kjng assured the defend· ers of five tnckS -four hearts and a spade. Observe that. had East not played a bean honor at trick one, declarer could cover with the king on the ~c ond round of hearts to brock the suil And failure by West to Jellison the queen of spades immediately would give declarer the option of leading a low spade from dummy at tnclc three to socalc home.
