Newport Beoch/Costo Mesa Doily Pilot No one able ~o help the kelp Once upon a time-a great kelp bed stretched from Little Corona lo San Diego. It averaged about a quarter-to d half-mile in width and 20 to 30 feet in depth. Rather olmously that great kelp bed is no more. To see a sitnilar kelp bed today, go to Monterey. ThrQughout the years contro- versy' has swirled around the rea- son for the'loss of that great kelp bed. The first target was the kelp cutler, a strange-looking craft that prowled through the kelp bed cutting off the kelp on the surface. That harvested kelp was used for some pharmaceutical purpose. However, that kelp cut- ter was licensed by the state as being .no danger to the kelp but indeed helpful in thinning out the kelp, wtuch tended lo cluster m truck mats on the surface .. Next, of course, was that old devil saltwater pollution. It is true that saltwater pollution 1s the reason we cannot restore kelp. The present pollution is such that sunlight cannot get to the young kelp below the surface m suffi- cient quantity for its We. However, the scientific com- munity has apparently come to a common agreement that the real reason for the loss of all the kelp was a period a few years ago robert gordner dllr\ng which we had a radical change in water temperature that killed the kelp. One summer we had a stretch of wanl) water that ranged from the high 70s into the low 80s. 'This was a blessing to swunmers but death to the kelp~ which can only live in water temperatures that range from the 50s in the winter to the 60s and low 70s in the sununer, but of course we didn't know what an El Nino was. However, those of us who were on the beach that summer can remem- ber vividly the piles of kelp on the beach. · Kelp is rather fragile. A stem of kelp may be 30 feet long from its roots on the rocks to the sur- face. Along the way are many leaves. All this puts enormous pressure on that thin plant the stem bemg the width of a hngcr. So when somettung happened to, weaken that kelp plant it broke off and ptled up on the beach. Because kelp iS so fragile we were used to kelp on the beach, but thdt swnmer the kelp piled up on the> sand m.h"aps 3 to 6 feet in depth None of us were aware tha.t we were observtng one of the great natural tragedies of our time. We were mainly dis- U¥bed by. the kelp flies. Then after the spell of warm water cctme to an end and we au grumbled about losing our tropi- cal water, we had some big burl. 'This time the kelp really piled up. The fragile plants, already weakened by the warm water, sunj>ly broke loo. c from the pres- sure of the big surf and agam piled up on the shore. Now that kelp bed is no more, and ttus time it wasn't the fault of mdn This time we can blame it on ndture. But I can't believe how dumb we were not to recog- nize that something awful was happening to our kelp. • RbBERT GARDNER Is a retired judge and a resident of Corona del Mar. His column runs Tuesdays.
