The fact that I've chosen to live here for 31 years and put four kids through the Newport-Mesa public school system is statement enough. But I do have a lot more serious bone to pick with Dis- ney's Tavares over his steadfast refusal to acknowledge public outrage over the mindless, myopic manner in which he has turned a professional base- ball franchise into a cacopho- nous and grotesque playpen. If there is anything the Disney Co. has more of than money, it is arrogance. Sliortly after Disney took over management of the Angels, I came home from a game with my ears ringing and my head aching and suggested gently in this space that mar- keting baseball needs to be approached on its own terms. Techniques Disney has found successful for its hockey team and movies and theme parks are not appropriate for baseball, which has an entirely unique set of traditions, fans and place in American society. A growing crescendo of similar sentiment has been expressed by other columnists and dozens of anguished newspaper letter writers wanting to be heard. I gave Tavares six weeks to get rid of those frenetic young women dancing on the dugout roof. Then last week, I attended two Angel games to see if he had gotten the message -and also to see if those Newport Beach wimps on the field had cleaned up their baseball act. They hadn't. ln one of those games, Angel batters tdok called third strikes six times with men in scoring position. But that was wild progress compared to what was going on between innings. The antics that had upset me in the first place had regressed from idiotic to obscene. The young dancers were now invading the stands with holes cut out of cardboard through which spectators were • wged to try and throw rolled up T-shirts. A spectator was invited to stand behind home plate and Sout~oast Thrlf t & Loan Association LISTEN UP joseph n. bell play a shell game being flashed on the scoreboard. Ao oom-pah band puffed away on top of alternate dugouts, once delaying_ the game until bana memoers were cleared off. And that's just a sampling. A friend told me he had attended an Angel game where spectators were invited to bob fo r baseballs. And over all this frenetic nonsense is a noise level so ear-splitting that conver- sation is simply impossible. So it becomes clear that the Disney people aren't listening to any drumbeat but their own. And when they finally driVe all the people who love baseball from the stands, they can -and probably will -blame a bad team. I never thought I'd long to have the Autrys back in charge, but I do now. That's idle wishfulness, though. Disney is here to stay, and this tunnel vision probably isn't going to change. So on the premise that if you can't beat 'em, the best strategy is to join 'em, I would like to olfer Tavares·some suggested games for his new playpen: • Douse the Mouse -ln this game, six children, preferably mean, are selected from the grandstand and stationed on top of the dugout, each holding a bucket of water. Cut-outs of Mickey Mouse then pop up out of the dugout. When the Mouse appears in an Angel uniform, the kids are to dump their buckets on him. Any con- testant who throws bis water on the wrong mouse is required to sit quietly through three innings of play and not move from his seat. • Find the Fan -ln this one, the dancing girls line up at the head of a dozen aisles. When a whistle is blown, they plunge into their section, questioning spectators. The first one who can oorrectly identify the score with- out referring io the scoreboard gets six tickets to Dodger games. • Bull in the Pen -This is a playful little joke that should be saved for late innings when the Angels have just gone through their sixth relief pitcher and are behind 18 to 2. The Angel man- ager walks wearily to the mound, takes the ball and motions for a left-bander. The bull pen gate swings open -and a real bull, with roses tied to his horns and a uniform jacket with the name •Ferdinand• on his back comes rushing onto the field. U he could be trained to kiss the thiffl base umpire, this would be even more hilarious. • Aisle Relays -Once again, the dancing girls split up among the aisles between innings and select eight chil- dren in each section. Four are position~d at the bottom of the aisle and four at the top. When the first pitch is deliv- ered, the kids start a relay, using a baseball bat as a baton. Extra points are awarded for each spectator knocked down in the aisles and each beer kicked over during the race. I have others, but I'll hold them back until we see how these play. They should work in nicely with Disney's grow- ingly successful program to get rid of all legitimate baseball fans at Angel games. Meanwhile on the exceedingly remote chance that Tavares might want to rethink the fun and gamesatAnaheimSraruum.I strongly recommend that he spend several evenings watching Ken Bums PBS tribute to baseball. And then I would urge that he take all the dancing girls, oom-pah bands, sling-shotters, ear-splitting noise and stupid games and ... no, let's not get carried away here. That he take the money saved by cutting out all this nonsense and apply it to the down payment on one starting pitcher who can go more than three innings. • JOSEPH N. By John Canalis, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA-The long road to repairing beleaguered alleys around Shalimar Drive just got a little shorter. The City Council voted 4-0 Monday to hire a private consul- tant to create an assessment dis- trict, or special tax zone, around certain alleyways in disrepair. The move essentially lets the city take over and fix the private- ly owned back roads. ·we're basically getting con- trol of the alleys so the work can be done," said Councilman Gary Monahan. ·This was done to improve the alleys.~ The cost of the repairs, along with consulting and legal fees, eventually would be charged to property owners through special property taxes. Only landlords who own alleys behind their buildings would be taxed. Owners can also pay to have the alleys fixed on their own, as some already have. The council agreed to hue a Santa Ana firm for no more than $155,150 to create the distnct Officials also OK'd $343,000 in legal and consulting fees. The expenditures will be charged back to the building owners, said Mayor Joe Erickson. For years, the city has been after the owners to clean up their properties and repair the private alleys that run behind their units which were slipping into slum- like conditions. Officials de<ided in the last year to take the matter into their own hands. Erickson said this is one many coordinated efforts to clean up the Shalimar. He said the normally wouldn't get involved but the poor condlllons in lt).e alley have a direct unpact on public safety. Other tactics to clean up Shal- l unar have mcluded community pollcmg. blocking streets and banning parking and loitenng. "They would ask if it was a Faberge egg, and I'd say 'No, it wasn't created by Faberge, but it's like one."' Grahl said many people have come to use the name "Faberge" to describe any ornate egg, not just those made by the famous a rtist. "Most ornate eggs are associated with European art and jewelry,• Grahl said. "We kind of joke about bow here we are California surfers making art. We're in that world." Grahl said he became interested in eggs through mechanics, which alSo helps with hjs jewelry designs. A friend in Laguna Beach has commissioned two eggs from Grahl to commemorate family events. Now that Grahl has the little egg behind him, he can focus on the big red egg that he has been working on for six yea.rs. The large red egg -· worth an estimated $2 mil- lion -includes an exact replica of the carousel in San Diego's Balboa Park. Grahl has spent yeai s inspecting every inch of the carousel and its mechanics to create his masterpiece .. He has even rented the carousel for days at a time, studying everything from how fast it turns to how high its animals move up the poles. It was while researching the big egg that the team developed concepts to try out on a smaller scale. "We thought pf some techniques and decided to use those on a smaller ver- sion ," Grahl said. "It was almost like, time out." The larger egg - about 22 inches in height - should be ready in about two months, he said. ~-~~~~~--~~~~-~---~-----~~~~-, •. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot CORONA DEL MAR -While team leader and No. 1 runner Christy Cwnmins has moved on to greater challenges, the most traumatic departure affecting the Corona del Mar High girls cross country team had nothing to do with graduation. If I asked people what our biggest loss was, they might say Christy Cummins," Coach Bill Sumner said. "But the biggest loss for our team right now is Denni Shryock. "I was the girls coach for the purposes of competition, but (Shryock) basically ran the pro- gram. She lost her teaching job at school to the wrestling coach (Gary Almquist) and it really dev- astated our girls. ff Sumner said Shryock's depar- ture so disheartened the team, he had to call a recent meeting to try to help his runners work through it. "I told the kids we had to cele- brate what they had with Denni, but that she wasn't going to coach this ear, and we had to o on. my a etes react e same way if ever I have to tell them I can't coach any longer, I'd be o r! very, very proud." .... Emotional baggage aside, ~ Sumner said there is plenty to be ..... upbeat about this fall. ~ "The good news is, we're ~ almost totally intact," he said of last year's third-place Sea View ~ League finisher. ~'------------- fall sports previews Senior Jennifer Morgan, No. 2 Tyler Beardslee ts Corona del Mar High's leader, but it ts the quality depth which powers Cd.M. last year behind Cummins, is back, as is fellow senior Vanessa Corona del Mar High boys team has that "can't-miss" label as '96 campaign approaches. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot CORONA DEL MAR -The Corona del Mar High boys cross country team appears to have similar resiliency to the proverbial lizard's tail. Like the reptilian creatures they sometimes encounter on their Back Bay training routes, the Sea Kings seem able to regenerate vital parts severed by, in this case, graduation. So, even though Coach Bill Sumner's squad loses its top run- ner, Andrew Gwin, as well as key contributor Mike Maguire from last fall's Sea View League run- ner-up, optimism runs rampant as this season nears. "I have a 99% success ratio when it comes to predictions, which I always make on the con- servative side," Sumner said. "And though it might sound a lit- tle lofty, I feel pretty comfortable saying this team can make reser- vations for Fresno (site of the annual CIF State Champi- onships).· Fueling Sumner's bravado is the return of seven runners from last year's top nine, including senior Tyler Beardslee, whom Sumner said rounded out last year's •big three" with Gwin (fourth in league and 20th al the CIF Southern Section Finals) and McGuire (16th in league). Beardslee, the Sea View League 1,600 meter champion as a sophomore (he finished fourth last spring), is clearly the leader of an otherwise interchangeable CdM pack, according to Swnner. I'd say Tyler is a half-notch above the rest, but the next four (Richard Hossfeld, Jason Rogers, Pat Russell and Brian Coombe) are step for step," Sumner said. "I guarantee you our second- through-fifth runners will rotate week to week. There's not 10 sec- right now.• Beardslee was 17th at last fall's Sea View cross country finals and 27th at section finals. He has rare talent, according to Sumner. But. as the veteran coach is quick to point out, the CdM philosophy isn't about the star system. "Tyler has an edge in terms of talent, but l still believe in the old system, which is building the top seven, and if you can tlevelop 1lll eighth, that's a bonus," Sumner explained. "Most schools try to find someone to build the team around; an ace. But our school doesn't typically get that kind of kid." Rogers was 11th at league finals as a junior, while Coombe, a junior, was 20th in league in 1995. But Russell and Hossfeld, like so many Sea King seniors before them, enter their final campaign largely unheralded. "We pride ourselves on having a pretty deep program, where guys move right up to take theiJ turn," Sumner said. "Every one of our top five guys has run two years of varsity, except Coombe, so l'm basically returning the whole varsity, except for Gwin and Maguire. "This team has an incred1bl0 work ethic. My top five don't miss a beat." Hoping to beat one another out for the two remaining varsity spots will be Bryan Kramer, Matt Dennerline, Sean Young, Kenny Schwartz and Dan Hedley. "I have 10 guys who would make any other school's top sev- en, H Sumner said. This abundance of talent ma~ allow the Sea Kings to better sur- vive the injuries and illnesses that often crop up during the course of the season. "We need to stay healthy. but it's not as vital to us as it would bC' with the average team,· Sumner said. "We can probably afford to lose a guy better than an average and there are some other things along the way, like the Sea View League title." Sumner srud Newport Harbor and Santa Marganta are the teams the Sea Kings will mostly likely have to run through to obtam the latter. "Santa Margarita is real strong and experienced and if Newport runs well and smart, it could be tough to beat. ff Jamieson, junior Jennifer Blair, senior Laurel Hafer and junior Brooke Robinson, Nos. 3-6, respectively. _ "Blair, Jamieson and Morgan are extremely strong.· said Sum- ner, who also likes the rest of the supporting cast, which includes junior Erika Green, junior Lauren Weinstein and senior Heather Near-September ••• always, near-100 Marshall. Blair, Morgan and Jamieson each finished in the top 10 among CIF Southern Section Division ID- A ·runners last fall, while Jamieson (10th), Blair (13th) and Morgan (16th) joined Cummins (seventh) to pace the Sea Kings at the Sea View League Finals last year. Green has come on strong, according to Swnner, who said she could wind up anywhere ftom tourth-sixth on any given day. Weinstein, a sprinter in track and a standout in soccer, could also crack the top five in her cross country debut, according to her coach, who said she has worked hard to convert natural athletic ability and speed to the three- mile distance.
