By John Canalis, Datly Pilo t NEWPORT BEACH -Recent back and neck mjuries along the Orange County coast have prompted lifegu.ards and hospi- tal officials to reiterate spinal safety warnings. With warm weather, a water temperature of about 65 degrees and a holiday weekend approaching, Newport Fire and Marine Lt. John Blauer said life- guards want to inform the public about how to protect their necks and backs in the surf. #As the weather gets nice, the water gets warmer and the trips in and out of the water increase," he said. "Conse- quently, we've had a couple of injuries that are at least note- worthy up and down the coast." The most severe recent injury was Aug. 14 when a 16-year-old boy was {>artially paralyzed div- ing under a wave at 17th Street in Newport Beach. In recent weeks, there have been a total of nine neck and back injuries in Newport. eight in Huntington Beach, four in Laguna Beach and three in Seal Beach, Blauer said. As a parent, as a woman, as a consummate Fraidy Cat, l loathe this stage of masculine develop- ment, this "everything-looks- like-smashed-guts" phase, but I tolerate it as I do most of the trib- al passages which plague the male race. Because I am the mother of three sons. It is our middle son, Nick, 7 1/2 years old, who is currently in the throes of this sinister obses- sion. He rewrites everything to satisfy his appetite for fear. The other night, I was read- ing aloud an excerpt from the •The World of Pooh" to my three boys. The story was titled, "In Which Eeyore Loses a Tail and Pooh Finds One." "Make it scary, Mom,• Nick demanded. •Make it scary and creepy." "Let's see, how about, "In Whith Eeyore Loses a Tail to a Mad Lumberjack and Pooh Finds One in His Bed That Night?" I said. "Can't you come up with any- thing scarier than that?" they pleaded. •Your bathroom," I said, "That's pretty scary." TIMI O U T peggy norm;tndin Humor eludes them at moments such as these. L ast week, while camping in Mammoth, we found our- selves with good old friends sit- tiil.g around a billowing campfire in search of some mild ghost sto- ries to entertain the kids. Our friend Faith came up with the first one, a classic Big Foot encounter told with a maternally appropriate level of suspense. Nick listened to the recitation with unblinking eyes staring into the flames and, when Faith was finished, he faked a yawn and a stretch and mumbled something about it being a "good story but not very scary.· Ken, one of the dads, seized the moment. "Hey, l got a good one," he said, •and it's true." Ken understood the words "it's true• formed an operative phrase in establishing the bone- chilling atmosphere boys such as Nick thrived on. He proceeded to tell a weird 60-second story about copperhead snakes, earth- worms, boys, hysterical parents and a paralytic condition which appeared to be death but which, in the end, really wasn't. I didn't get it exactly, but the boys were impressed. N ot to be outdone, Faith's husband, Jeff, jumped in. •I can tell you a story about a bat that invaded our house one night. We were asleep and ... " "Was it a vampire bat?" inter- rupt~ Nick. "Sure, that's right,• Jeff tried to resume his opening, ·n was a ·vampire bat that came swoosh- ing ... " "Did it have pointed teeth?" Nick: cut in again. "Yeah, it was a vampire bat with pointed teeth that were dripping with blood. OK, Nick?• Meanwhile, Jeff's two young daughters started to cover their ears and shake their heads back and forth chanting over his recitation, "I'm not listening to this ... la la la ... I can't hear a thing your saying, Daddy. La La La." Watching our sons absorb the ever-so-unnerving details of our ghost story hour reminded me of watching my husband Jim apply Tobasco sauce to his scrambled eggs. A few drops of the hot stuff puts a satisfied smirk on his face, but one drop too many renders him buggy-eyed and gasping for breath. I have learned from experience that too much of either will keep a body up all night. I did not want to share my chambers in the great outdoors with a pack of nail-biting insom- niacs, who whimpered at every shadow cast upon our tent walls. After all, that was my job. So, at the conclusion of Jeff's bat number, we called it a night. As Jim and I tucked our boys into their sleeping bags, they continued to beg for one more dark story, one more tale of a deeply wooded forest where human-like beasts roamed wild and haunted innocent little boys. The spot came open when head coach Rich Corso announced he would not be com- ing back following the team's dis- appointing seventh··place finish at the Summer Olympics. Vargas, who was Corso's assis- tant coach on the U.S. Team, and long-time Cal-Berkeley Coach Steve Heaston are leading a pack of about eight hopefuls pursuing the position. A selection commit- tee is expected to name a new coach by the beginning of Octo- ber. "Both want it just as bad as the other,· said local Olympian Chris Oeding. •Their appearances are obviously different. but they have similar approaches to the game. Howev- er, consecutive losing seasons have chipped away at years of Sea King mystique, which cul- minated with back-to-back national, state and section championships in 1992-93. CdM finished 9-10 in 1994 after a first-round playoff loss, then failed to make the post.sea- son last tall, posting a 7-9 record under first-year coach Brian Chartier, who watched all six starters graduate last spring.
