After more than two hours of delib- erations, a jury convicted Gerald Park- er, 43 , of brutally murdering hve Orange County women and one unborn baby irl the late 1970s. The victims included Bissonnette's s1Ster, Debra-Lynn Senior, a 17-year-old Cos- ta Mesa resident who was killed.-Oct. 20, 1979. The Jury aJso found special circum- stances of rape and burglary in all six cases as well as~a multiple murder charge, •making Parker eligible for the death penalty. "That's what we've Wdited for 19 years for,• said Pamela Seruor, the vic- tim's mother. "I'm just really, really happy. This is a hurdle we just dread- ed." However, Debra-Lynn Seruor's fanuly and the families of Parker's oth- er victuns -including Costa Mesa residents Kimberly Gaye Rawlins, 21, and Marolyn Kay Carleton, 31 -sc').ld the ordeal is far from over. U that's the BEACH NOTES chrisJio carney nancy gordner case, then the two of us are respo.nsible for the pollution of our coastal waters. In 1953, With our friend Ann Broenng, we slid down one side of Morning Canyon and climbed up the other into what would eventually become Cameo Shore~ but back then was noth- ing but wild oats and mustard. Wandering around in this wilderness, we found two "wild" horses and spent the next two weeks taming them with Quaker Cots direct from the box, only to find out they weren't wild at all bul owtted by Al Beltran, who ledsed the land -from Corona del Mar to Crystal' Cove -from The rrvme Co. A frustrated cowboy, he sat in a webbed chair under an umbrella every weekend oharg- ing a dollar a car to people going · to the beach jUSt so he could keep his beloved horses · Soon we persuaded Al to sell us one of the horses for $60 ($20 apiece) and board 1t for $8 a month. A kinder, more patient man cannot be imagined Within two weeks of buying Ebony (A more appropnate name would have b<.>en Fred), Al's pasture was overrun with kids. Within t'l year there were more than 30 kids dild horses. AJ was knee- deep in kids every day, and nev- er once lost his temper. To its credit, the Lions Club not only let the Cen- taurs m the parade, they invited us back the next year. When not parading, we av- eng~d Brookings 5 & 10 for satin ribbon, wruch we glued to milk bottle caps as awards fo(' our horse shows. When we got off ow horses, Al nught pile us m the back of his pickup for a tnp to Kau Kau Komer and rn-cent hamburgers or even to the horse dUctions 1f someone needed a horse And once a year we'd have our annual ride from the pasture to Irvine Park, a trek hard to imagine Ul the built-up world of today. It ~as an 'idyllic part of our childhood -a horse, plenty of ~and and beach on which to nde. and no parents We wish every child could have that opporturuty. Of course Addm and Eve couldn t stay in the Garden, and neith.er could we. Two thing!> causeo the change. One was that we grew up. Boys, Jobs, educa- tion -au !;Orts of things cut down on pasture time. And Al met a redhead It probably · wouldn't rdlse much of an eye- brow among toddy's kids, but divorce was still a ranty in those days. and when Al brought his new wife to the pasture, a certain innocence WdS lost. Eventually, Al's ledse ran out. and a.newer. more affluent group took over the pasture, which . became an equ~tnim center. Then Crysl.41 Cove State Park WdS established, and the horses were finally given the boot. But all that horse mdnure from all those hundreds of grazing hor~cs WdS still there.
