The two city councils will meet at 4 p .m . at the Lions Park Neighborhood Community Center, 1845 Park Ave., Costa Mesa. They will discuss continuing a pro- gram in which the two cities, along with Huntington Beach and tbe county, had been haring helicopters since 1993. Huntington Beach and the county pulled out ot the John Wayne Airport- based program last month. Now the Costa Mesa and Newport Beach councils must decide whether to continue the AirBome Law Enforce- ment Services program. And if they do decide to continue it, the cities! police departments must revamp the program on a smaller scale. Proposed changes include reorganiz- ing personnel and replacing some heli· copters. Under one proposal, each city would sell one of its two helicopters, then pool the money to buy a newer, better model. •n•s going to be different," .Newport Beacli police Sgt. Jphn Desmond said. •we don't have access to the resources of four agencies like we used to.• He added the downsizing could also mean fewer operating hours for the helicopters. "People who live in the cities proba- bly won't see much difference,• he said. ·w e're just tryitlg to figure out bow to continue this with just two cities."
