Hufstetler Sherbert. The Daily
Pilot wrote about her and her

still relying on the traditional
brochure as a marketing tool.
The year-old Costa Mesa
Tourism and Promotion Council
recently announced the release
of its inaugural booklet touting
the amenities in Costa Mesa.
The four-color, photo-filled
publieation is-available-to
tourists and travel professionals
interested in "planning a vaca-
tion to Costa Mesa," according
to a press release.
The Newport Beach Confer-
ence and Visitors' Bureau also
provides a number of colorful
publications promoting the
coastal city.

Shared loss brings two famiJies together

of Gray, 14, who died almost a
year ago of a heart attack during
water polo practice at Newport
Harbor High School.
Gray's death was determined
to be from a congenital heart
defect.

Campos, 17, died on Wednesday
after collapsing during water polo
practice at Saddleback High
School.

Peggy Lunde said her family
may try to meet the Campos fam-
ily when they return from a trip
they're taking to Europe.
"Right ~ow they're in such
shock, they're not going to
remember who they talked to,"
Peggy Lunde said. "We are still
going . through the (sympathy)
mail we got -there's a lot of pro-
found wisdom our ears weren't
ready for (at the time).·

"Water polo families are like
an extended family. That's one of
the reasons it's scJ painful," Peggy
Lunde said.
As for their own grief, Bob
Lunde said he and his wife will try
to develo a new life while a -
pling with the loss of an old one.
On Sunday, they prepared for a
20-day trip to Europe. They hope
it will be a break from all the
reminders, helping them to make
a·little progress, Bob Lunde said.
"We don't want to get stuck
feeling terrible, the weight of loss
every day,• he said.
"In the fall, when school is
starting, all those times, you real-
ize 'he's not here. We should be
doing these things with him,•" he
said. "It's a whole new set of
'couldas.' You just lament that it's
not going to happen.•
What really helped Bob and
Peggy Lunde in those early .days
of grief 1Nas the community's
prayers, Bob Lunde said. "I think
if anyone has time, the Campos
family could really use some
prayer,• he said. "This communi-
ty's been praying for us, and that
sustained us.~
"They've been a tremendous
counsel to us, sharing experi-
ences and talking about things
that help them,~ Bob Lunde said.
"We've been "involved in some
grief groups through our church;
they were very helpful. Everyone
is different. Every child is differ-
ent.
"I don't think even the Campos
know what they would need right
now to help," he said.

with her adolescent students
because of an activity she calls
"rap sessions," in which stu-
dents can anonymously ask any
question they have.
In her classroom, Hallisey bas
an envelope for each gra.de lev·

whenever they want. At times
when Halliley feels her class'
attention is wandering or her
students need a break, she will

with her students.

hazardous waste
The city and Costa Mesa
Sanitary District are sponsoring
a hazardous waste roundup
through Sept. 13.
Residents can dispose of
used motor oil, antifreeze, bat-
teries, pesticides and household
cleaners. The district will not
accept ammunition, explosives,
asbestos, ammonia gas, medical
waste, refrigerator coolants and
flammable materials.
Funding forthtrprogranrwas
provided with a portion of a
$75,000 grant from the city and
sanitary district. Interested res-
idents can participate by calling

Dying to buy that cruising
boat but just can't decide which
one?
Orange Coast College's sail-
ing program is offering a--two-
part workshop to help boaters
choose the right one.
The workshop meets Sept.
20 from 1-10 p.m. and Sept. 21
at 9 a .m. at the sailing center at
1801 W. Coast Highway in
Newport Beach. The registra-
tion fee is $39 tor an individual
and $69 for a couple.
The workshop is designed to
assist p~cipants choose a
cruising boat by discussing
yach size, yacht type, hull
shape, keel shape, ballast type,
hull material, rigging, mast and
steering.
Attendees will visit a local
boat yard to view examples of
different boats.

The school is offering a six-
week fitness course this fall
designed especially for people
older than 40.
The non-credit class meets
Mondays and Thursdays, Sept.
19 through Oct. 28 from 6:30-
7:30 p.m.
The program, titled •Trim to
Rhythm,• teaches students how
to tone and trim the body
through stretching and flexibil-
ity exercises. It is designed for
men and women who have not
been on regular exercise pro-
grams.

ence early Saturday after he col-
lided with another car on West
Coast Highway, Huntington
Beach Police Sgt. Mike McDo-

Leigh Wllliam Steinberg, who
has represented an iqlpressive list
of athletes and recently signed
famed Olympic gymnast Keni
Strug, rear-ended another car in·
the 700 block of West Coast High-
way, McDonough said.
No injuries' were indicated in
the arrest report, McDonough
said.

Volkswagen Fox, also going
westbound. McDonough said.
After the accident, Steinberg
was given a field sobriety exami-
nation then taken into custody on
suspicion of driving under the
influence, McDonough said.
•The officer had reasonable
cause to believe he was driving
under the influence," McDo-
nough said. Steinberg himself
could not be reached for com-
ment.
Steinberg received a blood
alcohol test at the station, the
results of which are not yet back,
McDonough said.

Center is seeking adult volun-

The activities include a variety
of projects in preparation for the
1996-97 program year, such as
maintaining the various habitats
on the grounds of the nature cen-
ter.

children about the environment

globe before his high school
graduation than most do in a
lifetime, will finally attend
Stanford University.

Abrams, 6-foot-5, to dominate
throughout his junior career and

the reality of growth spurts and
competitive athletics came into
play when others began to

But the bottom line is a
full-rlde Stanford scholarship in
men's tennis, a rare commddity
these days.

at Stanford, but I'll still be
traveling with the team. There,

probably more than when I was
at home in high school," Abrams
said Friday· by telephone from
Chicago, where he's attending
his grandmother's 85th birthday
celebration, one of the few times
he's traveling ~or pleasure and
not business (i.e. tennis).

begins Sept. 25), recently
competed in the U.S. Open
Juniors for the third time,
believed to be the most
appearances at Flushing Mead-
ows, N.Y., by any local junior.

A 13,000-foot mountain to tackle?
He'll be the first one to the top and be
asking the other clitnbers reaching the
