NEWPORT-MESA -Kinder-
garten class sizes will be reduced
to fewer than 20 students per
teacher for half the school day this
year if school officials can smooth
out some details with the teachers
uruon.
Though an official vote won't
come for another week, school
board members said Tuesday they
want to capi1alize on a state plan
which gives districts $325 per StlF
dent in classes where two creden-
tialed teachers are in class for at
least half the school day.
The trustees said the plan,
which would bring about $522,275
into chstnct coffers this year with-
out requiring any new teachers,
was reasonable, both economical-
ly and educationally. ·u the teachers union agrees, it

Not all of the parents in the
audience were pleased with the
board's decision and some even
booed Decker's comments.

on hand to oppose last week's

kindergartners and teachers at
Mariners, Kaiser and Adams ele-
mentary schools.
School officials planned to elim-
inate one kindergarten class at

those schools and to reassign the
teachers to new classes at other

A walk down memory lane

who is also an old friend. She ~closed another letter, from the
tail gunner who was blown out
cit Eddie's B-26 and parachuted
tp safety after it was hit by a
Messerschmidt 262 during a
tiombing attack on Munich.
: The tail gunner had never sur-
f~ced in the intervening 50 years
but apparently is tidying up
•infinished business in his late
?Os by providing details of that
last night to the families of the
other aew members who died
when the plane bit the ground
with a full bomb load and
exploded -just 24 hours before
World War Il ended in Europe.
· The tail gunner credited
Eddie with saving his life. His B-
26 was hit twice. After the first
bit, Eddie stabilized the plane
long enough for crew members
to get into their parachutes. The
second hit broke the plane in
an o y e gunner was
thrown free.
The letter was waiting for
Eddie's widow when she
returned from a trip to France
where she and the daughter
eddie never saw visited his
grave for the first time.
. Reading about Eddie's last
Qight was the culmination of sev-

He made a career of the Air
Force and was leading a
squadron of fighters w hen he
was sh ot down 10 years la ter
over North Korea. As a full
colonel, he was the rughest rank-
ing Ame rican officer to be cap-
tured by the North Kore ans, and
they worked him over in captivi-
ty for 18 months. He described
this ordeal in a ~ook called
•Honest John• and be is now
writing a sequel.
Paul McConnell, South Side's
bead cheerleader when we were
in high school and now a retited
insurance executive living in San
Juan Capistrano, has just been
featured in a book called
·Agents for Escape,• which his
French wife has translated for
English publication. The book
details a series of harrowing sto-
ries of Americans saved, protect-
ed and finally freed from occu-
pied France by the French
underground. McConnell's story
· of the mor~ewmg.
He was the bombardier of a
B-17 shot down over occupied
France on July 4, 1943.
McConnell parachuted safely
and was rescued by a French
engineer who passed him off as
a native in Normandy for two
months. He then made his way
to Paris where be worked with
the French underground. He was
finally able to reach the safety of
Spain earty in 19" afteJ a 36-
hour hike through the Pyrenees.
The third member 9( our
group probably had it the tough-
est or all. Bob Boseley -a retired
pharmaceutical executive who
lives in Los Alamitos -was a foot
soldier who slogged bis way
across North Abica and up the
Italian boot with the Allied
jnfantry. My own adventures fly-
1ng wounded Marines out of
Guam and Okinawa were pale
by compaiison.
It occurred to me that those of
us who lived through World War
II and the Great Depression that
preceded it won't be around a
great deal longer to talk about it.
At that lunch table a few weeks
ago, involving people rooted in a
single Midwestern high school,
we
serving. I don't know if anyone is
listening -or even ca.res.
But I do know that among
those four people - sorry, Eddie,
make it five -whose political and
philosophical differences are
enormous, was a richness of fel-
lowship and respect that, if
somehow shared, could make
dealing with our current domes-
tic differences a lot easier.

concept becomes ingrained
about the time they begin tying
their own Air Jordans: The joy of
the game.
It's the joy of the game that
draws them to the gridiron,
sandlot or playground arid keeps
them coming back, until
I ' families and other societal
pressures confine their sporting
interest to television viewing,
ticket buying, sports-page
perusing and, maybe, the
occasional weekend pick-up
game.
It's the joy of the game that
spawned touchdown dances,
home run trots. primordial slam
dunk screams, sack dances,
basket catches, no-look
behind-the-back passes, high
fives, victory laps, ·and that thing
soccer goal scorers do.
It also cost the Costa Mesa

How has it come to this?
Well, it seems, the innocence
of expressing joy in the athletic
arena has been forever lost in the
helmet-shedding struts,

Blue Dragons: Chad Stassel started the offen-
