Peny Hallmeyer is walking proof that attitude goes a long way in the golf business. Things got a llWe easier for Herzog & Co. in the second hall as the Mustangs roared to a 42-6 finish. BRIAN POBUOA I DAILY PILOT --~ ~--~ -· While Hallmeyer may not fit the typical profile of a head golf professional, he seems to be laying the foundation for a new generation of Orange County pros. Hallmeyer, a Corona del Mar resident, is 30. He looks younger. With his lean build and blond hair, you picture Hallmeyer catching six-foot waves at 54th Street, or skateboarcling along the boardwalk. Mustangs pass .by Gabrielino Instead, Hallmeyer's operating a brand new pro shop at Oak Creek Golf Club (Irvine), giving lessons to some golfers twice his age, and casting a standard in public relations at the Tom Fazio-designed public course, which is owned (The lrvine Co.) and managed (Western Golf Properties) by the same folks who run Pelican Hill Golf Club. Halhneyer, former NAIA golfer for Central Washington University, made ends meet when he first arrived here by working for UPS. But be missed golf, so Halhneyer accepted the lowest rung on the totem pole of dub golf employees (bag room attendant) at Santa Ana CoWltry Club. "I just wanted to be in golf," he said. By 1992, Halhneyer had a job at Pelican Hill, though valet parking hardly qualifies as golf experience. "It didn't take us long to recognize his personality, his skills and his dedication to service," said Jay Colliatie, general manager and director of golf at Pelican Hill and Oak Creek. "Perry, for us to decide on a bead pro, was a dead cinch. He By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot •Second-hall explosion, highlighted by first pass completions of the year, overwhelms Gabrielino. NEWPORT BEACH -And so it came to pass Thursday night that the Costa Mesa High football team can not only gain yards, but score points, with something other than the run. The host Mustangs, who played more than 178 minutes of the 1996 season without completing a pass (five interceptions techni- cally don't count), went up top for a pair of second-half scoring tosses to highlight a 42· 6 nonleague hammering of Gabrielino. ·we really needed those passes,• said junior quarterback Dan Baume, who missed on four first-half aerial attempts, but con- nected with Ben Felter for 78 yards and Jere- my Sied.sma for 41 to halt what was becom- ing known as "The Streak." Mesa Coach Jerry HoweU was also pleased about the passing payoU, but added a strong second half -wtuch produced five touchdowns in five possessions -to the list of positives the Mustangs (2-2) can take into the Oct. 11 nonleague finale against Calvary Chapel. "We knew we could do it," HoweU said of the passing pyrotechnics. "That was a big positive, but so was the fact that we could ~ ..... _. I tried to tell these guys all week that (Gabrielino, now 0-3) wasn't a bad foot- ball team. ~ut I guess they clidn't believe it until after the first half." Gabnelino, which lost a quarterback, full- back and tailback to injuries and saw at least three more players hobble off under the physical abuse levied by the black-jerseyed hosts, hardly appeared overwhelmed the first two periods. The visitors, playing their first varsity campaign without a single senior, drove 74 yards on eight plays with their first posses- sion, in fact, to claim a 6-0 first-quarter lead. Mesa's fake field goal from the Eagle 13 came up a yard short of the first on the ensu- ing possession, but Mustang Matthew Rude- sill recovered a fumble three plays later at the 20. Steve Herzog, who finished with 108 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries, carried all seven plays of the ensuing drive, the hnal time from 1 yard out with 6:10 left before internliSsion. Matt Peca's first of sioc successful PATs gave the Mustangs the lead fo r good. A muffed punt, 1 of 7 Mesa fumbles (only two were lost) helped keep the Mustang offense off the field until midway through the third quarter. But it clidn't take the fired· up front wall long to clear a spacious path- way for junior wingback Vince flamade, who sprinted 78 yards untouched lo begin a scoring explosion. Henog capped a 48-yard, five-play TD drive with a 5-yard scamper on the hosts next possession and Baume broke the pass- ing drought on the first play of the next Mesa march to delight the home crowd. Rolling left from the Mesa 22, Baume hit Felter in stride at the Mustang 40, where he sped down the sideline and ran away from a Gabrielino pursuer, who appeared to lay a hand on Feller's back at the Eagle 18. Felter's precedent-setting reception opened a 28-6 cushion with 1:24 left in the third and made it three TDs in seven plays and just less than six minutes for a Mesa offense which posted the highest point total of Howell's two-season tenure. . Hamade added 105 yards on seven car- ries and five other Mesa runners tallied 93 more to add to the 119 passing yards. But this one was also about defense for the Mustangs, as the likes of Julius Vasquez, Jeremy Lefever, Nam Kim, Donny Causey, Richard Price, Jose Ayala, Hamade, Felter, Jerry Cleveland and Ronnie Llevanos con- sistently stuffed the Eagles' veer attack. Gabrielino clid not get a first down after intermission and netted just 6 yards in the second half, 86 for the game. ·we had a few guys nicked up coming in and with the type of physical game they play, the dominoes just started to fall," said Gabrielino Coach Vince Lopez of his team's injury toll. tonight's prep football slate • Sltle: Newport Harbor, 7 p.m. • Sftulltion: Estancia is l-0 and ranked No. 10 In OF Division VIII; Ocean V'iew (1·2) exploded for 48 points last week against Century. • Favorite: Estancia, by 8. • Est.Mdll's k.y.
