I now reallze that 1 'have been der~lict m not men- tioning an even greater disaster • to our natural environment, the •destruction of our shorebird nest· 'ing ground -Shark Island. • Shark 1!.ldnd, pnor to the btg 'dredge, Wtl<; a wide expanse of white sand coveritlg much of •what is now Linda Isle; Harbor •Island and B<•acon Bay. On that 'Sdr\d were the nests of countless , short>btrds. When I tdme here m 1921 I • came from the town of Green River, a grubby lJtUe railroad town m thE' .,outhwestern comer of Wyommq. About the only birds 1 can remembi>r frequent- ing thd.t desolate expanse of ·sagebrush barrens dnd alkali flats were bunards. And so it was that the first time l went out on the beach at Balboa and c;aw sandpipers and terns running up and down m the shore break l thought l was lookinq dl the most beautiful buds in the world. I was living with my older sis- ter m edst Newport. There I made friends with a neighbor boy named Albert Spencer who, I discovered, shared my mterest m shorebirds. Albert's father had a rowboat, so Albe>rt and I would row from the Montero Street bedch to Shark Island to exam- , ine the nesting grounds of those shorebirds · Those so-called nel>ts were merely shallow indentations m 1 U1e sd.nd. The birds would lay their eggs m those shallow indentations and sit on the eggs . just like th0. other birds s1t in their more common nests. The eggs were beautiJul, but Albert and I never touched an egg. We were there to study the blids, not to hann them in any way. Never- theless, we were interlopers, • actually very large inte~lopcrs insofar as the birds were con- cerned. Thus they took preven- tive measures agd.lllst those large interlopers. Those measures 1 . were a practice akin to the div~ bombing of World War 11. Dive bombing had been per- fected by the Germans, probably by some .military man who had studied the nesting habits of shorebuds on the Baltic coast. Shorebirds were masters of the art of dive bombing. They would fly up above the interlop- er. close their wmgs and hurtle down on the mterloper. "fhcn at the very ldst second they would veer off, but not before they had deposited d load of bird poop on the head of the interloper. Just how they managed theit bowels in such a wdy that they could · release the poop at just the exact split second l never could figure out.
