seemed a foregone conclus1on,
Serene Stokes' re-election to the
Corona del Mar-area seut was
sealed Friday when the provi-
sional ballots were counted.
The final tally was very close
in the school bourd race, m a
y~ar m which three mcumbents
went unchdllenged. One-term
board member Stokes, a former
Sdnta Ana elementary school
pnncipal, finished 1,502 votes
ahead of her opponent, Corona
del Mar parent and teacher
Kathy Schwarz. With 21,205
votes, Stokes ended up Wlth
51.5% of the votes. Schwarz
ended with 19,701, or 47.8'};, of
the votes for a close hmsh.

pulled over on her when some-
one used counterfeit traveler's

lent checks wasn't Cdught, but
they have some evidence that
may lead to an arrest.
As for the psychic, she was
upset over the encounter but
vowed it wouldn't happen again.

modeling and art display, for the

be reconfigured 1 1/2 years
ago.
You would have thought the
school board suggeste~ placing
some children be placed in
prison by the reaction of par-
ents to moving their children to
a different neighborhood
school.
J, too, would P.refer thdt my
children remain where they
are, because I am aware of the
foibles of the school and have
made my own adjustments. But
the school district has to come
up Wlth a plan to help all of
the ch1ldren. If we keep com-
pJaimng about the quality of ·
our schools, we have to accept
that change is necessary to
make things better. Let's listen
to the plans before mobilizing
to block anytlung new in our
own back yard

Location: MCAS El Toro is centrally located in Orange County, generally east of Irvine, west of Lake
Forest and south of the Foothill Transportation Corridor. The project area also includes the County·
owned property that comprises JWA and the surrounding property. JWA is located ·south and west of
MacArthur Boulevard and the Interstate 405 (1-405) Freeway. An airport-to-airport transit connector

Description: The project is ~ Airport System Master Plan for commercial airports in Orange County, a
Master Plan for the development and operation of a commercial airport at the site of MCAS El Toro
(OCX), an Airport Master Plan or Master Plan Update for John Wayne Airport (JWA), a Base Transition
Plan, related land use regulations and actions for the civilian development and use of the stte at MCAS
El Toro. The project also includes an airport-to-airport transit connector between OCX and JWA.
Location: MCAS El Toro is centrally located In Orange County, generally east of Irvine, west of Lake
Forest and south of the Foothill Transportation Corridor. The project area also includes the County·
owned property that comprises JWA and the surrounding property. JWA is located south and west of
MacArthur Boulevard and the Interstate 405 (1-405) Freeway. An airport.to-airport transit connector
would be located between the two airport facilities.

go down. Usually, it is an unfortu-
nate accident that can be devas-

Somehow, Newport Harbor
High survived two tripped run-
ners and a third who stumbled to
finish second and advance to Sat-
urday's state fmalc; at Woodward
Park in Fresno.
"There's always contact, but
you don't usually end up on the
ground,• Coach Bun Barry said.
"We did a fantastic Job dodging
bullets.•
Chns Landgren was one of the
runners to go down, but man-
aged to pick himself up and come
in 37th. Chris McMillen almost
went down, but salvaged his bal-
ance and later came in 44th
The big blow was the loss of
Steve Jensen, who was unable to
continue after hitting the ground.
"That's where your middle guys
come in,• Barry said. "Ours did a

Adam Antoruni stepped up in
place of Jensen and finished 31st
overall and Doug Dukes was
40th, giving the Sailors the
required point spread for second

Not to be overlooked was the
effort of Curt Herberts, who came
close to winrung the race. Her-
berts stayed with the lead pack
for lbe entire race, even led for a
nme at the two-mile mark.

champions Saturday, and Amencan River's Jen
Schindler was the favorite to repeat her lnclivid-
ual honors here a\ Woodward Park.
Neither disappointed as the Pirates, behind
Costa Mesa High product Zoila Gomez, swept to
theti.tle, as well as Schindler in 17:47 in the 5,000-
meter course.
Gomez, a freshman, went 18:40 for fifth over-
all, and was supported
• by freshmen Bernice Carbajal (19:10), Sinfo
Orozco (19:47), Beatm Cordoba (20:15), ELc;a
Ortega (20:04), Sarah Hall (20:23J and Penni Prof·
fitt (20:02). the lone soph"omore.

Somehow, the Eagles used up another life and
survived illness and a missing man to take second
at Saturday's CIF Southern Section D1VlSion IV
Finals at Mt. San Antoruo College.

lie Appell said. "Today we hnished second by one
point. I guess we've used up three of our nine
lives.•
Missing from the lineup was Martin Munoz, who
was unable to get out of work. Tony Magana, who
was injured on the course during the prelims,.was
still healing and was also sick on top of it.
The good news, Alberto Munoz was still around
and healthy. Munoz battled for the lead most of the
race with rival Bruce Haricock of Costa Mesa, and
two other runners. Munoz hn1~hcd second with a
time of 15:42.
The Eagles got help from Manuel Orozco (9th),
Magana (30th) and Jose Juarez (48th) to secure
theJJ' trip to Woodward Park for the state fmalS Sat·
