shutdowns of services and resources
worldwide to religious wammgs of
Armageddon to predictions of no dis-
ruptions or inconveniences al all. ln
Orange County, t.J:te grand jury fonned
a special_ study group to examine how
local pubhc agencies were dPdhng
with thP problem.

Emergency Lifeline docs not distnb-

to prepare for any potential emergen-

vanilla malts made with real ice

ketchup not just a mouth-

did we ask for the hamburger fdt
content. less cheese or even a
dif't soda.
Merle's was repldced by the
Zoo, remarkable mainly for the
gorilla urging drivers to pull m,
temfying more than one child. It
eventually dosed, and the comer
became little more than a stor-
a~e lot for Christmas and palm
trees until now, which got us
thinking about some of the
chdnges other restaurants in
Newport hdve undergone.
Th~ Chef's Inn was our par-
ents' premier hangout in Corond
del Mar -the place to go wher1
you wanted a good dmner. lt was
ctround for t! Jong time, but tlS
closing seemed to put a. curse on
the site. Bernard's, the I Jungry
Tiger, dny number of edtenes
opened and clos~d untd lhe Stu·
dio Cafe mdde a respectable go
of it for a few yeurs. Then it hit
bottom as the Corona Cafe, only
to ldtely mdke a resplendent
resurgenc<? as Bandera (chicken,
ribs, steak and a great 5election
of side dishes).

occupied the small wooden hut
across from the Balboa Bay Club
when we wen• both fust married.

to an Indian restaurant and is
now Casablanca.
The Reuben E. Lee still sits m
the harbor the way it did 30-plu.c;.
years ago when ft opened on a
dark and stormy night, although
now it's the Riverboat Cafe and
Nautical Museum. In its prime,
the Reuben E. Lee was favored
by the local Hollywood set, and
waitresses watched television
stars drink too much and cry mlo
their bouillabaisse. We still
dream of its lobster thennidor
and crab Louis salad. But then,
we still miss Bob's Big Boy ham-
burgers and Crozen malts.
And then ~re are the restau-
rodnts that have been there so
long it's hard to believe they
were ever anything else. The
Hurley Bell hardly changed at all
when Lawry's opened it as the
Five Crowns. With itsJamed
prime rib dinner and its warm
Stilton cheese ,dressing it's a local
U\Stitunon. (If you don't think so,
try to get in there on Mother's
Day.)
The Arches, D1llrncm's, the
Quiet Woman, Newport Rib Co
-all still packing them in and
1 still serving the flavor-drtppmg
meat and potatoes that they did
before the word!> "fc1t• and "ca~
bohydrate • became the measure
of a menu
Restaurants come 'and go so
qwckly that you can't seem to
get to.them all before their ed!ly
I demise, but we think we've
noti.ced a trend lately. The new
Sid's Blue Beet, Outback Steak-
house, Morton's, Ruth's Chns
Steak House -all specialize in
hearty, lip-smacking, stomach-
tilling fare instead of Califorrua
Thai pizza radicchio designer
cuisine.
We think it aught be time for
a drive-in revival. We just hope
our waist.lines can take lt.

She also added two digs. Carey finished
with three kills, five digs, three .blocks and
33 assists, while Dill and Lavold each had
eight kills and teammate Brenda Waterman
chipped in with three.
"Enca Wade did a nice job serving and.
playing m the back row," said Glenn, who
added that Dill and Carey were also superb,
Ross produced three kills early in New-
port's first-game comeback, including one to
tie it, 6-6. Dill's solo block on Bullard's Jill
Franz gave Newport a 7-6 lead. Franz, a 6-1
senior middle blocker and the most v.eteran
of Knigh~ players, is headed for' Texas Chris-
tian next year.
Newport continued its first-game surge
on a net vtolabon by Bullard and a kill by
Waterman, then Lavold took over at the net
with four kills and a scoring block on
Bullard's Megan Johnston
Kills by Ross gave the Tars leads of 12-6
and 13-6, the latter of which ended a long
rally with both teams making dramatic
saves. What followed was a service ace by
Wade and an unforced error on Bullard 's
side to provide the margin of victory.
Carey had two aces, a service winner and
three cligs in the second game as the Tars
raced to a 9-0 lead and were never threat-
ened. On one Newport point, La.vold had a
block and Waterman and Kieran Collins
each made digs to keep a rally alive, giving
the Tars d 10-2 lead.
In the tlurd game, one of Bullard's side-
oulli came on a kill by Jessica Kinder. whose
spike barely grazed Ross'. ponytail. Carey
had two blocks in the game, while Lavold
added another as Newport Harbor jumped
out to a 9-1 lead.
The Tars scored the match's last three
points with Ross behind the" service line.

dard as the Vanguards chase a
shot at a national title.
