He sets the rope in the bottom of the sea, waits for an average of three hours then pulls it up with a hydraulic motor. After several hours of fishing as far as 15 miles off shore, he returns to Newport Beach around 9 a .m. and spends the rest of the day selling his fish at the Dory Fleet market next to the Newport Pier. · Voyatzes often went fishing with his f<tther and brother when lie was young. His father, who was a sculptor in Greece, has been the most in1luential person in his life -primarily for his vigor. Today at age 64, Voyatzes' father is still going strong and working hard to support the family. Voy- atzes says his energy is hard to beat. As for Voyatzes, be is addicted to fishing. Regardless of the long hours he works every day, he still enjoys sport fishing during his vacation time. Voyatzes says a fisherman b a mechanic and a weatherman. He has to know about the weather, where the fish are and what to do when the boat breaks down. After years of fishing in the Newport area, he can sense what the weather will be for the next · day. When the TV weatherman information is only 60% accurate, he claims to get it 90% right. "I know the ocean very well,• he says. "I've been everywhere. I know the ocean better than the streets over here.• RESPECT FOR THE SEA Voyatzes has never experi- enced a storm or an accident - even though he goes out in bad weather, too. His radio and cellu- lar phone are his help in avoiding accidents. "It's dangerous,• he says, "but you have to take the chance. I think you need a little bit of luck doing (fishing)." The potential danger of his job often causes his fiance to worry. Butile's -very-confident about his judgment. For Voyatzes, the experience is his luck, and that keeps him from danger, he says. Fishing is a tough job, Voy- atzes says. State regulations - including limits on the amount of fish he is allowed to bring in -can make earning a living more diffi- cult, he says. For instance, on an especiAlly bountiful day he can bring in as much as 500 pounds of fish; other days, he may only catch 100 pounds. Because of the physical and economic rigors of being a fisher- man, Voyatzes doesn't plan to encourage his future children to follow in his footsteps. As for him personally, you can't keep Voyatzes out of the sea . •Once you get attached to fishing,• he says, •no matter how hard it is, you just miss being in the ocean (when you're away). ·u I was born again, I'd defi- nitely do fishing.• His future plansf Voyatzes says he'll buy a bigger boat and spend the rest of his lite 011 'the ocean. . -Stoey by Hot-Nga Wonq Photo by Marc MarU8 . ·~· ----~ . k .:ii\ ) -.:i ~ -.. -/ 7 ... -:. • •, ']i , ... ··~: ..
