By Christopher Goffard, Daily Pilot I n his latest incarnation, Alfonso Mareno, Jr. sits behind a polished mahogany desk. clad in shirt and tie, in the white-walled offices of Glob- al Investigations, the private detective agency he owns and operates. Thirteen years earlier, in what seems to him a lifetime ago, Mareno navigated the urban war zones as part of the LAPD's gang enforcement unit. Before that, he was a 22-year-old Marine slogging through the jungles of Vietnam. Central Los Angeles, where, as the oldest of eight boys from a poor Roman Catholic family, he used his tists to keep ·the evilness· away from his doorstep. ·The good Lord blessed me with natural pugilistic ability, and l fought a great deal,• he said. The mahogany desk ntight seem a peculiar place for a man accustomed to gritty streets and adrenal surplus. At SQ.__Mareno moves with the li ht-foot- ed precision of a prizefighter, and he exudes an intensity that must be unnerving to those on the wrong side of the interrogation table. That quality recently helped Mareno crack a major armed robbery case the Los Angeles Police Depart- ment couldn't solve. T he case involved ijlree armed robberies at three separate loca- tions of the King Taco restaurant chain. from August 1994 to November 1995. The robbers, who made off with more than $50,000 and during one raid pistol-whipped a restaurant employee, were believed to be members of the Mexican Mafia. The company president, Raul Mar- , police hadn't thought to look. In the course of hundreds of hours of inter- views with restaurant employees and ex- employees, Mareno said, ·There was one suspect that kept surfacing, kept surfacing, and his name was Gilbert Marlo." . Marin, the director of the King Taco chain, had been present during the first robbery. Mareno managed to elic- it a startling fact -one police bad missed -from one of the restaurant employees: The robbers bad called Marin by his first name. Mereno subjected Mann to a poly- graph test. Marin failed. "l say, 'You're the suspect, you're the one that did it,'• Mareno recalled.. "I work for about two hours on him. He starts crying. l can see him physi- cally start to crack. District Attorney Craig Renetzky, who prosecuted the case, credits Mareno with turning the tide of the investigation. ·He really solved the case," Renet- zky said. "He seems to have gotten the guy convinced that we knew all about it. I could not have gotten a successful prosecution case without that investi- gator's help. You could almost say he singlehandedly did it.• The triumph helped allay Mareno's enduring pa.ID over the greatest let- down of his career. OCTOBER 25, 1996 World travelers fiild some hospitality, fudian style Here's the lateat lmtallment Wed by Newport Beach native SWllC1rl Seely and her new hu. band, Arie Katz, during their year- long honeymoon around the wo1ki. You can ceoch them at their Internet web site address www.jwconnectlon.com. The .Daily Pilot plans to publi8h periodic updates of the trip. By Susan Seely I t took a little longer to get to India than we anticipated. Because of impenetrable thun- derstorms over Bombay, our Cathay Pacific flight from Bangkok was diverted to Dubai. Too tired to shop in the renowned duty free shops. we grabbed what sleep we could on the floor of the Dubai airport lounge and then dragged our- selves back onto the plane for the two hour flight to Bombay. We finally landed in Bombay at 7 a.m., about eight hours later than scheduled. We were exhausted • I awake to watch #The Cable Guy" -bad mistake), but excited to see what the coWltry that we had read ,about and heard about for so long •held in store for us. : On our drive from the airport to our hotel we got the first glimpse at some of what we would be see- ing throughout our trip. Through the open window of the taxi we saw people everywhere, engaged in all sorts of activities, and in vari- .ous stages of dress (or undress). Susan Seely and Arte Katz I think we saw more people during that 45-minute drive than we had seen in the previous four months. Cows were wandering aimlessly through the streets, hors- es were pulling carts, dogs were everywhere, and we even saw the occasional goat. Unbelievable. Seven in the morning here was busier than mid-day in New York City. The extremes of the city also struck us. The smells and the sights and the obvious destitution of many of the people (this was beyond what we think of as pover- ~) was ov~he~g. Whole faro- and huts built haphazardly along the road and were going about their business as if they were in a private home with four walls and a fence -and I do mean going about their "business!• It was amazing to see the way those peo- ple lived and to imagine what must be involved in their swvival. After an initial misfire with one hotel whose staff seemed to have an extra dose of attitude, we set- tled in comfortably at the Heritage Hotel in Byculla, a neighborhood Octoberfest Meets Halloween ... We were in desperate need of sleep and food, but before we bad either, Arie-mad& a all to R.alphy .Jbired, our initial contact in the Indian Jewish community. When Ralphy heard we had arrived in town, he immediately invited us for lunch and sent bis driver, Mr. Nair, over to pick us up. That lunch was the start of four whirlwind days spent with the Jewish community and with a local chapter of the Rotary club of which Ralphy is President It also led to our discovering the kind of hospitality from a Jewish commu- nity that we had been hoping to find all along; we just didn't e~ct to find it half-way round the world in India, a country so different from our own. That night we were Ralphy's guests at his Rotary club's meeting at the Ritz Hotel (not the Ritz Hotel we know). Towards the end of the formal part of the meeting Ralphy intro- duced us to the asked Arie to explain a bit about what we are doing on the Internet with our travels. After Arie spoke, Ralphy announced he would host a spe- cial meeting at his home on Sun- day night, to which all. were invit- ed, where he would have us demonstrate exactly how we use the Internet and our digital camera as we travel! · The next morning, Arie got up at 5:20 a.m. to go to the Hoshanna Rabba service at the nteret Israel Synagogue. We thought that women wouldn't be there, because no one really ever suggested that l come -wrong. Arte came back at 11 a.m. wtth reports of a full synagogue with a largecontingentofwomen. The congregation was excited to have Arie participate in the service and perform all the Cohen (high priest) roles since there is no resident Cohen in the congregation. Arie . said that the synagogue it.self was painted a light blue with a lot of white and that most people took off their shoes before entering, reminding him of a mosque. nter- et Israel, as most of the other syna- gogues we would attend in Bom- bay, was a Bene Israel synagogue with many customs different than those with which we are familiar, some found nowhere else in the world The Bene Israel community is one of the oldest Jewish commu- nities in the world; its origins in India dating back to the pre-Chris- tian era. · That aftem09n we toured around Bombay a bit ~d ~en be picked up for Shabbat dinner at Ralphy Jhirad's house. It was inter- estipg to note the Jhirad's different Shabbat traditions, and particular- ly to see their prayer books, which were in Hebrew and Marathi, the language of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It was interesting too, to be in the home of an Indian family and see how they live. The home-cooked meal made by one of their two cooks (one cooks only vegetarian food, the other cooks all varieties) was delicious. can ror ~ a.r Dliinen -===The Tinder Box==:m PRQUUM CIGARS • Arturo Fuente • Ashton • Avo • Cuesta Rey • Davidoff • Diamond Crown • Don Uno • [)unhlll • Excalibur • Fonseca • Griffin • H. Elizabeth's group gath- en after every Shab, bat service to reread the Turah portion in Marathi because few of the group's members understand Hebrew. We sat and listened and followed along in English and they had me read a section to theni as well -in English, not Marathi. When they finished, the .group turned to Arie and asked him to teach them something about the Torah portion they bad just read, he being a Cohen and all. Arie was a bit flustered but came through with an interesting bit of r , a r impressive just the same! Throughout the holiday weekend people continued to give Arie hon- ors and ask for his blessing mak- ing Arie feel a bit, he said, like a witch doctor, but also very hon- ored. . After the reading group was finished. our new friend Elizabeth took us firmly in hand and led us to the reform synagogue, which was celebrating Simcllat Torah that day, a day earlier t.ba.n in the · orthodox tradition. The group of people at the Ame~ Join~ Dis- tribution Committee building were extremely friendly and fun. We had a lively bit of dancing, singing and carryipg the Torah scrolls around the room and out onto the balcony, and we were invited by several people to call on them and visit when we could. Needless to say, our experience wiUt the Jewish community in Bombay far surpassed anything 1 we would have imagined. The hospitality and generosity shown to us ovetwhelmed and astonished us. Despite the many (in our eyes) unpleasant sights, sounds and smells we encountered in Bombay (more about that later), we were blessed by the people we m~t - place to which we hope to return in the future. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -An all-points bulletin for the Newport Harbor High football team's defense remained unanswered through the first two quarters of Thursday's Sea View League showdown with visiting El Toro. But an impassioned halftime plea by Sailors Coach Jeff Brinkley apparently convinced the beleaguered Tar defense to tum itself in.· · b ou ht a de · to our defense," said seniori middle linebacker Joe Urban. who along with senior tack.le Jason Deere stepped up to blank the explosive Chargers after int~ mission. With Harbor's offense continuing to produce, that was all the Sailors needed to come away with a 27-17 triumph, which propels them right back into the league title hunt, for which defending CIF Southern Section Division V champion El Toro may now be among the missing. "I think they got the halftime message," said a relieved Brinkley, who may have still been digesting the lump e Toro senior scatback Murle Sango thrust into his throat with 286 all-purpose yards in the opening two periods. "Our three keys to victory were: No big plays; 100% on PATs; and ball control. I wrote them on· the board when I went in at halftime and told them we weren't taking care of two of them." Actually, it could have been a perfect 0 for 3 for the Sailors, who fumbled away their first possession to aid an El Toro defense that was also searching for some answers. "Our offense has been doing the job all season," said Urban, who was in on two sacks and stopped a fake punt for a 2-yard loss midway through the fourth quar- ter. "But Brinkley told us Newport has always been known for defense and we weren't living up to that tra- dition." Said Deere, who was in on three second-half sacks and shared a first-half collar with Urban: "The defense bad to step up. n With the defense step- ping up and the offense nev- er losing a step, the Tars (6- 1, 1-1 in league and ranked sixth in Division V), erased a 17-13 halftime deficit spurred almost solely by Sango. Newport's Ray Ohrel (120 yards on 30 carries) capped a seven-play, 65-yard march with a 22-yard scoring run to tie the game, 7-7. But Murie the magician once again materialized in the Harbor end zone four plays later, bursting 75 yards to make it 14-7. It was the last big play of the night for the Chargers (4-3, 1-1 and ranked No. 7 in Division V). Until completing three passes in the final four min- utes -with Harbor leading by 10 -the Chargers man- aged just 2 yards o! offense in the second half . El Toro finished with 54 second-half yards, but Erik Runfola finished them off with an interception in the tmar1-is econds. . . . The victory keeps the Sailors (7-3) unbeaten in Sea View action through six matches and puts them in position to clinch a spot in the CIF Southern Section Playoffs next week with victories over third-place Irvine (1\lesday) and Newport Harbor 27, El Toro 17 The Sailors offense, however, triggered by senior Josiah Fredrlksen (16 for 20 for 167 yards), was impres- sive all night long. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot IRVINE -It is not an uncommon strategy in girls team tennis: Stack your already powerlul doubles with a standout in singles, then roll the dice and hope your No. 1 singles player can win a set or two. That's exactly what host Wood- bridge High did on against Corona del Mar in another down-to-lhe- wire Sea View League match Thursday, won by the Warriors because of their doubles, 10-8. The Warrio:s. vthose victory -over-the Sea-16:ngs-t6 days eattler ended in the same score, won eight of nine doubles sets, giving them 15 doubles victories in 18 sets against CdM this season. Perhaps that's why C'dM Coach Tim Mang, whose squad (14-2, 5-2 in leayue) has. lost only to Wood- bridge Lhis year, was so rruffed. "It came down to our doubles, which didn't play today," Mang said. "So there's going to be a major swit~h. CdM will host the Sq.ilors next I Thursday; Woodbridge will play at Newport Harbor on Nov. 4. Cd.M's celebrated singles play- ers did their part in winning seven of nine sets, but Woodbridge's Natalie Exon, the league's runner- up last year to Nina Vaughan, cap- tmed the necessary wins from her No. 1 position to 91ve the Wamors the match. Adriana Hockicko, Wood- bridge's No. 2 singles pldyer, was switched to doubles against CdM, teaming with April Arturuan al No. 2 doubles. Hockicko and ArtunidO swept, 6-0, 6-1, 6-3. "Smart move, obv10usly, ff Mang said of Woodbridge Coach Joan Willett's strategy. Woodbridge, ranked No. 2 in Orange County, led in games (23- 22) after the first round, which was tied, 3-3, in sets. It led in games, 47- 45, after two rounds, also tied, 6-6. Woodbridge's doubles swept in the final round, while Exon defeat- ed CdM's Caylan Leslie, 6-2. Exon earlier beat CdM fresh- man sensation Nadia Vaughan, 6- 2, but junior Nina Vaughan (play- ing third singles) swept for CdM, including a 6-3 victory over Exon in s o roun . Vaughan improved to 42-5 in singles th.is year with the sweep. "I'm going to Harbor to cheer for Harbor at the Woodbridge-New- port Harbor match (Nov. 4), • said Nina Vaughan, whose team will probably earn the No. 1 seed in the CIF Division I Playoffs with a win over Newport Harbor on Hal- loween. Both Back Bay schools defeated Peninsula this season in nonleague play. The Panthers are ranked third in CIF Division I, behind top- ranked CdM and Newport Harbor. Woodbridge is top-ranked in Divi- sion Ill. Woodbridge's Danielle Hustedt, one of Will ett's best doubles players who has been out for two weeks because illnesses, is expected to retmn to the lineup in time to face Newport Harbor in 10 days. "I knew it would be a three-way race, ff said Mang, whose team must defeat the Sailors, then hope the Sailors beat Woodbridge again on the final day of the season, to win a share of the Sea View title. CdM's singles players remained solid, with Nadia Vaughan upping her mark th.is season to 35-7 and Leslie improving to 38-6. ·r expected our doubles to do better,• Mang said. Mesa rings Ea • Herzog (Jimmy) runs wild, scoring four touchdowns, including punt returns of 80 and 65 yards to punish crosstown rival Estancia. By Jim Walters, Daily Pilot 6 34 COSTA MESA -The Costa Mesa High starting tailback doing all the damage Thursday had that familiar smile of a Her- zog and that familiar crushing style of a Herzog. Heck, the first name was even five letters. However, it wasn't Steve. It was JIM- MY.. Tue Jimmy in this case, Jimmy Herzng who rushed 18 times for 172 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the Costa Mesa freshman football team to a con- vincing 34-6 victory over cross-town rival Estancia. Two of Herzog's touchdowns came on runs of 1and14 yards. The others on elec- trifying punt returns of 80 and 65 yards. Herzog's returns so demoralized the Eagles that they tried to run for a first down on fourth-and-13 at the Costa Mesa 42 midway through the third quarter instead of opting for another punt. "We got killed on special teams," said E...tancia Coach Dave Jones. "We couldn't punt so we just decided to go for it. We actuaUy do that a lot because our defense has been so good, but we couldn't stop (Herzog) today. I wish we had him on our team." first when Matt Mueller capped a three- play drive with a 24-yard TD burst early in the first quarter. A LS-yard penalty for having 12 men on the field and another 5- yard illegal procedure call doou1ed the "extra point attempt. "I was pretty happy to start there," ones sai . e recovere a wn e an then went in for the score. We were think- ing 'Yeah, that's the way to open up.'" The Eagles (3-3-1 overall, 0-2 in Pacif- ic Coast League) looked on the way to snapping a two-game losing streak. Unfortunately for Estancia, it was all Mus- tangs from there an as Costa Mesa scored PUBLIC NOTICES Estancia quarterback Grtfftn Crogan ts swarmed over by Mesa defenden In Thursday's Paclttc Coast League game. 34 unanswered points. After falling behind 20-6 at the half, Estancia ran off 19 plays to Costa Mesa's two in the third quarter, but came out Costa Mesa's ortly off~nsive play was a fumble; the other was Herzog's second TD punt return. •Jimmy did a great job for us, but I hope you can mention the job the line did tonight," Costa Mesa Coach John Camey said. "We work in practice to have them crea e o es so a even muny s wouldn't get touched. They did that today." Robert Hulliger, Aliscio Martinez, Chaz Hunter and Jason Rankin were especially singled out by Camey. Rankin was in on two sacks on defense. The first person to hug Herzog after a PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICES post-game meeting, was his brother Steve. "He really helps me a lot,..-Jimmy said. "We look at films of my games and he same with his games. We really think alike." The kicking game was the key for the Mustangs who improved to 6-1 overall, 2- 0 in Pacific Coast League play with three league games remaining against Univer- sity, Laguna Hills and La a Beach. e es e pun re , os esa also recovered one of two pooch kickoffs, but both plays ironically led to two first- halt scores. "That's a set play," Carney said. "We've been pretty successful with it this year." ~ Not quite an onsides kick, the place- kicker puts the ball over the first line of l'eceivers into the hands of the second wave. The MuStangs flood the zone with the ball and battle for the recovery. and a two-point conversion from Dave Weir to Greg Stewart put the Mustangs up, 8-6. Estancia recovered the first of the two ensuing short kickoffs at the Mesa 4 7, but went three-and-out before Herzog ran back the punt to put the Mustangs up, 14- The Mustangs tried another pooch kick, recovering it at the Estancia 37. Sev- en plays later, Herzog rambled in from the 14 to make it 20-6 at the half. Stewart added a 5-yard TD with 5:31 left in the game to round out the scor- ing.
