Rwnored tor weeks, it's now official. Southern CdliJomia College's futwe nomenclature, Vanguard University of Southern California, has chosen its mascot which will take athletic teams •. mto the 21st c~ntwy. So without further ado (plP<lSe ~agine a big fanfare), we present the Vanguard Uruvers1ty .. Lions. OK, so it may not be the most exciting nickname ever devised, but, according to the we9site (www.vanguard.edu) it 'was the ·overwhelming choice of thE' populous of the school, which is the most important thing. But [ was hoping for something m.ore exciting, something more vanguard if you will. According to the website, the word vanguard in Vanguard University is supposed to represent something vi<>ionary, the foremost position in a movement, reflecting the university's dedication to a multi-cultural, gender divers~ student commuruty. Van Gogh, Mozart and Shakespeare were vanguards. Lions aren't the best reflection of that ideal. In defense of the I.Jons, Athletic Director Bob Wilson noted the nickname as a representation of one of the other definitions of vanguard, the . leading edge of an attack. The · term originated in Greek and Roman times in reference to a type of soldier, but then we are all aware of what the relationship between Romc1ns, Christians and lions wds. It is, however, a far more intelligent selection for a mascot than others wluch have appeared in this column (Washington's Spokane College Sasquatch) as well as some that haven't yet (the Lone Sldr State's Richland College Thunderducks or the Arkansas Tech Uruvers1ty WonderBoys). I guess I expected something more unique. There are too many Lions, Tigers and Bears roaming the mascot community. But if the people dre happy, who am I to say? As for the logo, I'lf let 1t spcdk for itself. · • With that out of the w ay, this ts a good place to announce some of the newest members to the pride. According to soil ball coach Beth Renkoski, El Dorado High seruor Jill Jessen hd.S signed with the Lions. Jessen had a 1.07 ERA for the Golden Hawks as a JUmor and Wa!-1 the team rv1VP.
