MEETING The Newport Harbor Panhel- Advertorial Auto._Eacts ,... - by Paul Frech SERVICE .t REPAIR -GERMAN• SWEDISH JAPANESE AUTOMOBILES COMING CLEAN ON CLOGGED INJECTORS If a car owner uses a brand-name gasoline that contains sufficient detergents and deposit control addi- tives, it is seldom necessary to have the fuel injectors cleaned. Back in the · mid-1980's,·clogging of electronic fuel injectors arose as a problem on cars equipped with multiport fuel injection systems. Such systems have an indi- vidual fuel injector to supply fuel to each cylinderJn_the engine. When It was found that deposits accumulated on injectors of this type to cause rough idle (and engine misfire and poor gas mileage, in severe cases), the petroleum industry quickly came up with the solution of putting special additives in their gasolines that could, actually clean the injectors with the engine operating in normal use. Since then, it has not been appropriate to use rough idle as an excuse to clean fuel injectors, unless an improper fuel has been used. HINT: Fuel injector cleaning is generally of no use on throttle-body fuel injectors, which basically take the place of the old-fashioned carburetor. ON FIRE Car fires are not as uncommon as a person might think. In fact, the National Fire Protection Association reports that there are about 331,460 vehicle fires in this country each year. Most are caused by mechanical pro- bleffls, leaks, and electncal problems, all of which can be prevented with regular maintenance. Thus, car own- ers can spare themselves the frightful prospect of a car fire by having their cars checked regularty, with particolar attention paid to hoses, pipes, and caps. All should be secured, in good condition, and replaced if necessary. Gasoline and other car fluids account for 42% of all car fires. As for electri- cal causes of car fires, do-it-yourself· ers run the greatest risk of creating short circuits and malfunctions that can lead to fires. Lastly, because the exhallst system can become very hot (a catalytic converter can reach 1, 100 degr9es Fahrenheit), a car should not ·be parked ov~ combustible material (dfy leaves). Regular maintenance can help you avoid a host of automotive problems that you can only begin to imagine; give Y04X car the rootlne attention It delervee and you're"'°" likely to be satisfied with ycx.r c:ar'a performMCe. "I hate waste.• "I would like to increase com- puter usage among the students,· said Man Pham, who is running against Patterson. In area two, Patterson is the dear fund-raising champion, rais- ing more than $14,000, mciuding $5,700 from the college's teachers union. In area three, Rwz has garnered · more than $4,750, mostly from edu- cators across Southern California. And in area four, which partially covers Costa Mesa, incumbent -Paul Bergertras raised $13,500.
