erman who has been reported

Meel< may have drowned when
his boat sank offshore Sunday
morning. Since that time, a
relief fund has been created at
a local bank, and residenti>
have repeatedly asked how

The Wedge for more
than 25 years.
His respect for the famous
surf spot is immense, and
throughout his life he has
wanted to document the great
times he has had there.
•1t•s all an addiction that
doesn't seem to go away,• he
said.
That's why Thoman has
turned his Corona del Mar
house into· a tribute to The
Wedge's epic waves. The
walls.are covered with framed
photos taken during the past
~O years and depict everything
from Wild beach parties to the
ultimate shots of big-wave
bodysurfing.
The collection of photos -
which has been labeled the
unofficial "Wedge Museum•
-encompasses a group of
bodysurfing friends who are
known as the "Wedge Crew,•
said Thoman, 41 .
They include photographer
Ron Romanowski and Wedge
old-timer Fred Simpson, who
invented the fins all the body-
surfers use.
What started as a few pho-
tos on the wall over the 13
years he has lived m Corona
del Mar turned into a seem·
ingly unparalleled collection
of Wedge surfing photos. The
Wedge tnbute seems to
embody a certain carefree atti-
tude that the group of friends
has whe.n they go out to surf

at The Wedge for 25 years and has been banging photos of The Wedge for 20 years.

to a fraternity, where we
always have the common
bond of bodysurfing The
Wedge,• he said. ·we don't
have many magazines or
movies for bodysurfing like
they do for Boogie boardiilg or
sldnd·up surfing. This tS about

Thoman said bodysurfers
are a specidl breed because
the re seem to be so few of
them nowadays. But he said
once he tried bodysurfing at
The Wedge, he could never
give it up for dnything else.
"Part of it is that it's so dilfi-
cult to master and it's such a
unique sport, so very few peo-
ple are very good at it," he
said. "It's kind of an under-
ground sport because no one
else is really documenting it •
But he said his beloved col-
lect.Jon may not be around for
much longer. Things chdllge
and people grow up, and if he
ever moves from his small
house near the beach. he
probably won't take his photos
with him.
"I'll just give .them lo the
guys -let them take which
ones they want." he Sdld.
Even if his collection of
memories doesn't stay with
h1m forever, Thomctn said
there 1s no doubt thdt TI1e
Wedge will.
"The1 power, the intensity
and the ddrenaline rush are so
addicting,• he said. "The
wave brought me down here
from Culver City, it hooked
me, and then it was the peo-
ple, the friendships and the
camaraderie that kept me
here."
While most of the origmal
Wedge Crew are manied with
children and some of them live
out of the area, Thoman said
they plan to get together for a
reunion every year to remi-
nisce about the old days.
"lf you're not having fun,
you're not living," he said.
•And for most of us, the
Wedge is the ultimate fun.•
School bus ·radios stolen .from district

about $45,000 from Monday
morning burglary.

COSTA MESA -Thirty-seven school
bus radios were stolen from the Newport-
Mesa school district's bus yard Monday
morning, school officials said.
Intruders apparently used d torch to
get through a chain-link fence on the bus
yard, which is nedf the District Educutton
Center at the comer of Baker and Bear
streets in Costa Mesa.
"They got into the buses by cutting the
padlocks and in some cases they had a
manufacturer's key,• said Carolyn Stock-
er, executive director of facilities and
operations.
The manufacturer's key is a standard
issue from th~ Bluebird Bus Co But for
the buses that were not Bluebirds, Stock-
er said the intruders apj:>arently pried
open the doors or used bolt cutters.
"These were professionals,· Stocker
said. "They had a torch and the bolt cut-
ters.•
Some tools and eqwpment were taken
from two school district work trucks as
well.
Stocker said the radios all had the
sdme frequency. Whoever took the radios
could either use them for a network in
,mother community or modify the fre·
quenc1es.

years of working on Neighbors
for Neighbors projects he has
found that projects on rental units
were not as successful because
the landlords of the properties
might have conlnbuted to the
problems in the first place and
renters would not benefit as much
because they're a mpre mobile

around the Bark Park that is

$17 ,394 contract and a $6,000
budget adjustment. Staff had
ongmdlly received an estimate of
more than $10,000 by another
fence company, which did not bid
on the pro1ect. The costs grew
because top rails and bottom rails
will be added to the fence to pre-
vent damage from people climb-
ing over and prevent dogs from
escaping the park. Work on the
fence should be completed within
the next month. '

man, but he hasn't been found

Jim Cams also decided he
wanted to contnbute to the frum-
ly. Both he and his wife are teach·
ers and the thought of two boys
not having their father home for
the holidays distressed them.
