SIGNED, SEALED AND DEUvf!RED Byhower has her hands full this season running the Mail Room and Gift Wrap Center at Pash.ion Island in Newport Beach. nus time of year, her busllless tliples as people hurry to get their gifts wrapped and mailed off to loved ones across the country and around the world. The last few days before Christ- mas are crunch time for Byhower and her employees, as a steady stream of customers have flowed into her two stores. •A lot of them are really stressed,• Byhower said. If history repeats itSelf, today will be the worst day of all. Last year, some customera dictn:t even have time to wait for Byhow- er's employees to wrap the pre- sents, choosing instead to plop down in the middle of the store dfld ldckle the task themselves. H People last year were handmg me cash and saying, 'Give me the supplies, I'll do it right here,·· Byhower said. lliE LAST MINUTE The business has taught Byhower about procrastinabon. Seeing what waiting until the last minute does to other people and having been in the same posi- tion herself, she now gets all her Chnstmas shoppIDg done by Hal- loween. She also trains seasonal employ- ees by having them wrap her per- sonal gifts as practice. AJthough many people wait until the last minute because they can, it usually only takes one llrne of having to pay hefty next-day delivery fees to teach them a les- son, Byhower said. For example, she's been known to add a six •pack of Coke or a handful of candy to a box to tbrow off the reapient of the gift. Other times, customers have asked her to put small packages within huge boxes or the more-common , putting-a-~x-within-a-box-with-, irl~a-box trick. "We needed a Darshaun Garner Including the final four points of the first period, however, Estancia put together little confidence going into the (Coast Christmas) Classic (which tips off Saturday at Estana.a.)." With the number of video cameras flashirig red lights, it looked like Christmas morning · for the kids. Appropriately, there was ·a special giveaway ~ge from both schools in Wednesday night's nonleague game, won by Coach Bret Aem.mg's Artists, -43- 37, as they improved to 9-2. •I've seen you guys play twice (before),• Aeming said to Cd.M Coach Paul Orris, "and that (second half) was the worst I've seen you guys play this sea- son, and that (first half) for us was as bad as I've seen us play.• Oms, whose team fell to 8-3 and couldn't buy a bucket in the game's last 4:39, couldn't have agreed more. Laguna Beach erased a 10- point deficit in the third quarter, tied the game twice early in the fourth, then watched Cd.M go scoreless the rest of the wa.y after seruor center Justin Shea gave the Sea Kings a 37-35 edge with 4 :39 still to play. "It's disappointing, because we've gotten hammered by Laguna Beach the last two years (when the Sea Kings struggled overall),• Orris said. ·we really wanted thl:s one." In a classic tale of two halves, CdM won the first one a.s guard Alec Hanson (team-high 12 points) hit two three-pointers and Shea ended up with five rebounds (four offensive). But no one on the Ooor, and probably none of the swveyon m the audience, wOukrw ~ med that CdM would miss :ill final 11 shots. There were 10 lead changes in the game. It was tied twice in the fourth quarter. ' In a crucial series following a CdM timeout with 0:44 left and 'Laguna Beach leading, 39-37, the Sea Kings wasted little time upon inbounding the ball,· as senior guard Brandon Crosby misfired on a three-point try. "We thought we had an opportunity to get something," Orris said. "ln hindsight, maybe we should have taken more (time off the clock). But that was the shot and it was the look we wanted. Things just didn't go in for us." · · The Artists rebounded and were quickly fouled. Laguna Beach's Jesse Obrand sank two from the line for a 41-37 lead with 0:30 to play. In the closing seconds, CdM missed three more attempts from beyond the arch. then Mor- gan Reynolds (seven rebounds) made two free throws with 0:00.7 on the clock for Laguna Beach's margm of victory. • ('lbe Artists) executed down the stretch and we didn't,• Onis said.
