The general consensus is that rainy weather makes it difficult to pass. But when it comes to footing on a slippery field, offensive backs and receivers usual- ly have the edge, because their cuts are more calculated. HIGH SCHOOL B OYS AND GI RLS CR OSS C O UNTRY CnM-MEsA COI11SION" LOOMS •Thursday's deluge figures to add yet another factor to Saturday's Division lV boys finals at Mt. San Antonio College. By Jim Walters, Dally Pilot WALNUT -Thursday's day- long gully-washer has added an interesting variable into the mix for Saturday's CIF Southern Section Cross Country Championships set for Mt. San Antonio College. If the rain continues and the three-mile hilly course is deemed unfit, race officials would switch to the designated rain course-basi- cally a flat road course that criss- crosses its way through campus. There was a consensus among local coaches that they would pre- fer a little mud to the rain course, as long as there was no risk to their athletes. •t would rather run the muddy course because of the familiarity,• said Costa Mesa Coach Joe Busi. •niat's why we run the Mt. SAC Invitational. We want the kids to know the course so they can go out 100% with no surprises at CIP, •Win, lose, or draw, we don't want it coming down to someone getting lost in the race. There are a lot of turns at the beginning of the rain course and it could happen.~ Corona del Mar Coach Bill Swnner agreed the regular course would be preferable, saying he hasn't really been thinking much a bout the rain course. "I think the chances of using it are slim,• he said. ·1 wasn't at Corona the last time 1t happened (14 years ago). "One year, it rained 2112 ~ches on Friday and it was still drizzling Saturday morning. The mud was about two-inches thick, but we ran the regular course.· Newport Harbor Coach aim Barry joined in the crescendo. Mlt would be the same situation for everybody, but it would be my hope that we run the regular course,· he said. ·we don't get enough rain here to practice on the rain course. I don't think any- body does. But we've all run road courses.· Weather permitting, the New- po~ Harbor High boys kick things off in the Division ID finals at 1 :50 a.m. The Sailors, led at last week's CIF Prelims by Curt Herberts and Matt McKinley, are currently ranked No. 6 in Division m. The girls (No. 5 in Division IIl) are led by Alicia. McFall, who won her heat in the prellms and bas to be considered one of the favorites Saturday. The girls final starts at 9:30. Jamie Swarbe{Q is another one to watch. She finished 30th Zeiler, a senior, has 71 com- pletions and 761 yards the last nine games. 1963 The Mustangs' smasb- mouth double wing hardly relies on ftnesse, wedging a handful of blockers in front of wtngbacka Steve Henog and Vince Hamada on •atam left• and •stam right• oo the majority of their plays. The Sea Kings are current- ly No 1 with Costa Mesa No. 2. The last time these two teams ran head-to-head, at the Mt. SAC Invi- tational, Costa Mesa topped Coro- na del Mar, 100-101. "There is a nvairY there,· Busi said •But its a fnendly rivalry • ·we want to beat them bad and they want to beat us just as bad: Sumner agreed. "Tell Busi that if he needs help taking his kids up there, I've got room in my van. They might be a little late, but I'll get them there • Costa Mesa's Jaime Carillo is over his bronchitis and both teams are healthy. Sophomore Bruce Hancock led the way for the Mus- tangs with a third-place finish in their beat at the prelims while Eric Solis was ninth. Wlu.le these two titans eagerly anticipate renewmg their rivalry, the rest of the held has some strength, as well. The top five teams in the pre- lims were separated by only 32 seconds. One of those teams is Estanaa, which like a chihuahua, has a way of conung up fTom behind and biting you on the heel if you aren't looking The Eagles are ranked No. 4 in Division IV. Lws Lopez was 10th in the same beat with Costa Mesa while Tony Magana hnished 16th and Manuel Orozco, 18th. The Sea Kings were led last week by Jennifer Morgan's fourth- plnce fuusb and L1z Morse in 11th. The Eagles, competing in another heat, countered with Melissa Inouye, who took bfth and Brisei- da Salgado in eighth. Costa Mesa's Jamie DeNoewer and Gegi Van De Walker will rep· resent the Mustangs.
