16% overall in Orange Co\.l.llty this
year, though Costa Mesa and
Newport Beach are headed in dil-
f erent directions
The monthly figures compiled
by the county's Sooal Services
Department reveal that child
abuse cases have dropped steq_dily
since 1994, when 41,653 cases
were reported. Last year. that fig-
ure was slightly mote than 35,000.
But there is a marked contrast
between Newport Beach dJld Cos-
ta Mesa. Newport Beach saw a
20% increase in reported child
abuse i.J:lcidents from 1997 to the
first 11 months of 1998, whil~ its
neighbor had a 14% decrease
The number of incidents report-
ed also dilfers greatly between the
cities. Costa Mesa had 1,017 ind-"'
dents reported in 1998. compared
with 244 in Newport Beach and 52
in Corona del Mar.

was Jack Walker's gymnasium.
Jack was a retired Bntish mid-
dleweight champion. Since

circles, he was no Sugar Ray
Robinson, but at least he knew
the rudiments of the sport. At his
~. he was traming a group of
y.:>Un5J me'l m the so-calloo art of ·-boxing. . ' . (
. The gym consisted ot a ring,
some punching bags and two
sweat boxes. The sweat boxes
are of note because they were
death traps. Once inside the box,
one could get out only if some-
one outside opened the box.
Theoretically, once inside.with
the steam turned on you could
boil alive unless Jack remem-
bered to tum off the steam and
let you out.
The gym was used almost
exclusively by a group of young
men who had ambitions of
becoming professional boxers. In
the language of box.mg, they
were Jack's "stable.•
l had always wanted to learn to
box, and in those Depression
years I had plenty of time to
learn to box and still operate a
law pracbce. So·J started boxing.
In so doing, I learned a truism
concerning boxing. Thdt ~. for
every Gentleman Jim Corbett
there are hundreds of Mike
Tysons in the so-called fighting
game. Once in the ting, your
opponent has one desire -to
kill you.

school's population neared the

present 1.100 enrollment.
