move that exempW1ed the magru-
tude of the El Toro airport issue,
Orange County supervisors voted
3-2 Tuesday to elect <;:harles
Smith as chairman of the board,
overlooking anti-airport Tom Wil-
son.
The vote was unusual because
normally, the Vlce chairman -
Wilson would have no problem
moving into the board's top lead-
ership position And, after it
becomes clear that someone else
has the votes, it is usually a unan~
i.mous vote for that persC?n
But this is no ordinary year.
1bis is the year of El Toro
The drama stdrted when out-
going board Chainnan Jim Silva
nominated Smith for the position,
whlch was seconded by new, pro-
airport Supervisor Cynthia Coad.
Silva, Coad and Wilson werE~
sworn in together minutes earlier
at a ceremony on the step:,, of the
old County Courthouse.
But Supervisor Todd Spitzer,
who also opposes a large dirport
at El "foro, nominated Wilson for
the pos1llon. The motion for Wil·
son failf>Jl, wj.th Silva, Smith and
Coad voting against him.

port-Mesa school district, Bergeson has

state Senate.
In 1992, Bergeson, a Republican, was

1990, she won the R:cpublican nomindtion
for lieutenant governor but Jost the election
to Leo McCarthy, who was succeeded by
Gray Davis, who went on to become gover-

•The world would've been a very differ-
ent place if I'd won," Bergeson said.
In 1994, she came bdck to Orange Coun-
ty to succeed retiring Supervisor Thomas
Riley on the Bpard of Supervisors She took
office one month after the county decldred
bankruptcy and worked to get the govern-
ment back on its feet.
But two years later, she abandoned the
office to become Gov Pete Wilson's secre-
tary of child development and education -
a post 10 which.she sdJd she could really do
some good. Her tenwe ended when Wil-
son's adrnin1strabon did, but Bergeson said
she is tremendously proud of what she has
been able to adueve
And Bergeson. 73, knew this day would
come: "Everything I purchased for my
apartment in Sacramento was inten<ll"CI to
sell-destruct m two years.•
It's time for the liJelong political activist
to start winding down. Even she is reluctant
to call it •retirement,• but it seems as if her
35-year career 10 pubbc ofhce is at least
moving mto a drlferent phase. ,.

Newport Beach resident Gerard Fobes has decided to chase after storms rather than Hollywood lights.
Hopeful actor's star shines brightly in other pursuits

In 1994, 23-year-old Gerard Fobes of
Newport Beach, was passionate about
acting. He made his professional debut
starring in a music video for "Standing
Outside the Fire," a song by Garth Brooks
about a boy who doesn't let his disability
stop him from pursuirig his dream of join-
ing his high school track team.
•That video has made a differegce to a
lot of people," said his mother, Jean
Fobes. •Mostly, it's useful as a tool to talk
about contributions that disabled people
can make."
At the time, Gerard, who has Down
syndrome, was not afraid to try anything.

arts college 10 Anaheim for the develop-
mentally disabled, he play~d drums with
Hi Hopes, the school's towing band.

Although he still occasionally plays
minor roles in movies. Gerard is no longer
blinded by Hollywood lights.

directions.
One of his poems, "My Being," was
displayed at an exhibit. •Artists Beyond
Disabilities,• in August 1997. Written on
paper Gerard made by hand: the poem is
based on his experience with Goo: •My

He loves meteorology, tracking severe

He hopes to one day be a meteorologist

Friday is the last day to drop off holiday
cards for recycling at Costa Mesa City Hall.
The Costa Mesa Sanitary D1stnct is
sponsoring a ddve in which the card fronts
are sent to the St. Jude's Ranch for Chil-
dren, which hou.ses abused and hom<>less
youth, and made into ne~ cards.
A drop-off bin is in the lobby at City
Hall, 77 -Fair Drive. Cards can also be

Centennial Farm needs
volunteers for school tours
Centenhial Fann, a rruniature working
farm at the Orange County Fairgrounds,
needs volunteers to lead school tour groups
and help in the Agricultural Resource Cen-
ter. .
The fa.rm educates children dbout agn-
culture, and is home to about 50 arumaJs
and 30 crops. Tours ;.-sre given from October
through May each year. Volunteers must
share a love for the outdoors as well as for
arumals and children.
