NEWPORT BEACH -Though
clues are still meager, Alan Peter-
son Jr. thinks he lmows one thing
about the people who killed his
father: Given a little incentive,
they will turn on each other.
That's why Peterson J r. plans
to buy billboard space a.round Los
Angeles County advertising a
five-figure award for information
that helps bring them to justice.
He will also take out as many
newspaper ads as he can afford.
"(The police) have told me,
you put a reward out on the street,
and these people would turn their
own mothers in," said Peterson
Jr .. 31, a mild-mannered man
with soft, rounded features.

condolence that have been arriv-
ing steadily since 62-year-old
Alan Peterson Sr. was slain on
Nov. 14.

tonight whether or not to adopt changes
to the zero tolerance policy.

NEWPORT-MESA -Tonight will be the last
chance for members of the public to state their
views about the hotly debated zero-tolerance poli-
cy before school board members vote to adopt the
revised rules.
Newport-Mesa Urufied School District board
members voted 4-3 at the last meeting to gwe pre-
liminary approval to the policy that snpulates stu-
dents violating alcohol, drug and weapon rules will
be transferred to a different school for 90 days

F or shoppers who pack into South Coast
Plaza for the usual Christmas crush this hol-
iday, the new Metro Pointe center across the
street may provide a breath of fresh air.
Despite its smaller size, the new outdoor Cos-
ta Mesa shopping center has stores that are
geared to appeal to the masses, drawing a dif-
ferent consumer to its Mediterranean-style
courtyard and modern walkways.

On Monday, construction workers busily put
the finishing touches on the 385,000-square-foot
retail, restaurant and entertainment center for its
grand opening this week.

Shoppers Linda Scott-Katz of Irvine and her
mother Adele Scott from Nagshead, N.C., were
lured to the center on Monday for a visit to The
Container Store. After strolling through the
plaza's pathways lined with potted trees and
plants, they got more than they bargained for.

Board member Wendy Leece said she agrees
with the techrucal clarificabons in the revised pol-
icy, but that she wants the essence of the zero-tol-
erance language to remain the same.
·we need to send a strong message to our kids
that we will not tolerate any drug or alcohol use,"
Leece said.
In addition to the zero-tolerance policy, the
board 1s seeking input on the estunated $614,336
block grant apportionment the district will receive
from the state.
The funds can be used only for non-recurring
costs such as deferred maintenance, technology
and instructional materials.
After listerung to public comments, the district
will present allocation proposals for the Dec. 10
meeting, Supenntendent Mac Bernd said.
Before tonight's meeting, board members will
interview four architect firms for the estimated
$400,000 Newport Coast Elementary School pro-
ject, said Carolyn Stocker, executive director of
business services and auxiliary operabons. Twenty
architects responded to the distnct's request for
proposals.
Decker said he hoped Newport Coast residents
would attend the interviews.

Wrong-way driver causes multi-car crash

NEWPORT BEACH -An
alleged drunken driver going the
wrong way on the Corona del
Mar Freeway triggered a multi.-
car accident resulting in three
serious injuries Sunday night,
authorities said.
Leopoldo Garcia, 19, of Santa
Ana, was driving his black Ponti-
ac Trans Am northbound in the
southbound lanes around 9 p.m.
near Irvine Avenue when he col-
lided head-on with an oncoming
Jaguar, said California Highway
Patrol Officer Angel Johnson.
Garcia was driving the car
with the headlights off, Johnson
said.
She said the Jaguar, driven by
50-year-old Nancy Tallman of
Monarch Beach, spun out of con-
trol. An oncoming Jeep Chero-
kee overturned after swerving to
avoid hitting the Jaguar, she said.
She said the Jaguar struck a Nis-
san on 'the driver's side door.
Garcia suffered a broken leg, a
broken collarbone and a concus-
sion, and was rushed by heli-
copter to Western Medical Cen-
ter in Santa Ana, where he is in
stable condition, Johnson said.
A helicopter flew Tallman to
the UCI Medical Center in
Orange to be treated for two bro-
ken legs, two broken ankles and
a broken pelvis. The entire side
of the driver's side door was
caved in, Johnson said. She said
Tallman is in stable condition.
The driver of the Jeep was
Susan Frey, 44, of Costa Mesa,
while the driver of the Nissan
was John Wagner, 59, of
Monarch Beach.
Frey suffered neck and back
strains, bruises and abrasians,
but Wagner wasn't hurt in the
crash, Johnson said.
Garcia will be taken into cus-
tody on suspicion of felony
drunken driving when the hospi-
tal releases him., Johnson said.
Johnson said a black Trans Am
travelling without headlights

to avoid (the accident)."
She asked witnesses to call the
California Highway Patrol with

Suspected drunken driver slams into light pole
NEWPORT BEACH -An
alleged drunken driver is report-
ed to be in stable condition after
slamming his car into a light pole
on Coast Highway late Sunday
night.
Around 10:30 p.m . 41 -year-old
Ariel Hernandez of South Gate
was driving #at a high rate of
speed" when his 1993 Chevy
Camaro left the highway and
slammed into a light pole near
Dover Drive, said Newport
Beach traffic investigator
Howard Eisenberg.
Hernandez, the only driver in
the car, was arrested on suspi-
cion of driving under the influ-
ence but released to Western
Medical Center in Santa Ana to
be treated for head injuries,
Eisenberg said.
Speaking from his hospital
bed Monday, Hernandez said he
did not know bow the accident
happened.

after stealing $5,000 from a Costa
Mesa Wells Fargo bank Monday
afternoon, said Costa Mesa police

26 to 30.
No one was hurt in the rob-
bery.

Warren Miller's 47th movie,
•snowriders," s)lowing today at
the Orange County Performing
Art Center, is a feast for snow
lovers.
Tlie crew spent 18 months
filming ski and snowboarding
excursions as well as other non-
traditional snow adventures set
in a scenic backdrop.
The film features more snow-
boarding this year and shots of
traditional alpine skiing, conven-
tional snow-skimming gear like
snowshoes and sleighs as well as
non-conventional contraptions
such as monoskis and garbage
bags.
Also new this year is a
' sequence on the newest craze,
parabolic skis, which are shorter
than the traditional ski and are
shaped like an hourglass.
Viewers will also see more
shots from never-before filmed
ski runs from around the globe.
#We take people to new, exot-
ic locations," said Miller's son,
Kurt, who has produced and
directed the past 10 movies.
Miller said his crew worked
for 10 years to get into and shoot
film in China, where a ski resort
was built but rarely used.
Right before intermission,
Miller said the audience will be
amazed when an extreme skier
in France jumps off a 1,500-foot

nal scenes of traditional skiers in
kilts roughing the highlands of
Scotland; amputees and other
disabled athletes; and adventur-
ers flying down hills on inner
tubes and plastic bags.
The movie is accompanied by
a soundtrack of Counting Crows,
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blues
naveler, Jars of Clay and other
nationally recognized rock

unlocked truck.

• 1900 blodt of Sherington l'tac:ie: A trespasser entered an open bedroom
window and turned on a light that woke up a tenant. The trespasser then
told the victim he thought the apartment was empty and jumped out of the
window.

roughly 1917-1921-1
lived with my parents in Green
River, Wyo., a grubby little rail-
road town. My father loved it
My mother bated it. I loved it in
part because it was there I had
my first dog, a bear dog.
Green River was one of the
last bastions of the Old West.
Front Street was lined with
saloons. The town treated Prohi-
bition with lofty disdain, a matter
of some distress to my mother,
who was the president of the
local chapter of the wcru, an
organization with precious little
clout in that town. The saloons
came right out of a Class B
movie of the Old West with
batwing doors under which we
urchins peered as railroad work-

bear dogs was that they were

They not only tracked the bear,
they killed him, too. During the
process quite a few dogs·were
killed, also. The SPCA would
certainly not have approved the
Green River-style of bear bunt-
ing.
The hunters carried long
poles. The dogs, usually in packs
of 20, tracked the bear which
usually climbed a tree. The
bunters used the poles to push
the bear out of the tree. A fight to
the death then ensued between
bear and dogs. The bear always
lost, but during the process sev-
eral dogs were killed and almost
all wounded.
It was a vicious, cruel, barbar-
ic practice, but it existed. I don't
defend it. I only report it.
My father brought me a bear
dog puppy. I named him Buck
after the dog in •Call of the
Wlld." Buck developed into an
outstanding dog and bear fighter.

Outdated telephone directo-
Jies have relatively few functions.
They can be used to prop up
computer monitors, to fill empty
bookshelves, or they can be
100% recycled back into tele-
phone books or envelopes.
Costa Mesa residents and
businesses are asked to drop off
outdated directories for recycling
through Dec. 13 at 16 different
locations citywide.
Seven years ago, the Costa
Mesa Sanitary District was the
first in the county to launch a
telephone directory recycling
program.
Since the program's inception,
more than 230,000 directories
have been recycled. This year 10
public schools are also participat-
ing in the program for a monetary
award and a grand prize at three
levels: elementary, middle and
high schools.

All-American Boys
Chorus recording
dedicated to Hoag
After receiving a $52,000
Jonation from the George Hoag
Family Foundation, the All-
American Boys Chorus will dedi-
cate a professional audio record-
ing in the memory of George and
Patty Hoag 11.
"Strike Up the Band" will fea-
ture 12 to 14 songs including
"Edelweiss• from the musical
"The Sound of Music " and "01'
Man River" from "Showboat.•
The recording will be released on
compact disc and cassette.
The All-American Boys Cho-
rus, which was formed 26 years
ago, claims the Orange County
Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa as its
headquarters and is made up of
about 110 boys ages 8 to 15 years
old.
The recording is a tribute to
the contributions and charitable
work of both George Hoag II,
who died in 1995, and his wife
Patty Hoag, who died Oct. 31.
The grant will help the chorus
for years to come, Tony Man-
rique, executive director for the
chorus, said in a press release.
Funds from sales of the recording
will enable some boys to partici-
p ate in the program tuition free.
The Hoag family bas con-

wonderful keepsake patch.
you get a promo for an oil
company to go with it.
It's not free, you have to buy
it, if entitled. And no one's
forcing anyone to buy it. But if
you want one, it's the only one
you're going to get.
Most often it is the booster's
club which obtains the patch;
sometimes the athletic
department scrapes up the
money; the athlete can buy it, as
well, if no one steps forth.
This trf!asured keepsake for
champions, as well as finalists
and quarterfinalists, does not
come easily.
A reminder, forever, of some
of the absolute highlights of an
athlete's life.
Now, thanks to unbelievable
corporation greed, that CIF patch
is laced with the commercialism
of corporate logos.
For years, now, CIF has found
itself in the sorrowful state of
depending on corporate
sponsorship to keep it going
financially.
Apparently not content to
have its banners everywhere at
the playoff games, as well as the
event actually named for it, the
Oil Slicks have gone one better.
Now the logos of the gasoline
company and its little
mini-market venture, are
inscribed through the patch.

There has been a constant
request from State CIF to
everyone in the media to label
their championship playoffs with
the Oil Slicks' moniker, but to my
knowledge in virtually all cases,
such requests have been ignored
by the print media.
I can tell you, as far as I'm
concerned, and I believe it to be
a universal theory, it's still the
Sugar Bowl, it's still the Rose
Bowl and it will always be the
CIF Southern Section Playoffs, as
well as State CIF Playoffs.
Money Will not change that.
With the soiling of the CIF
patch, one wonders what will be
next?

Maybe they could paint the

playing surface at each event.
Maybe ... maybe that's

mega·corporation step up and do
the right thing, simply because
it's the thing to do, with simple,
modest credit.

over their Back Bay rivals in their
pockets, but it was the Sailors
who exacted some revenge by
claiming the championship with
a 15-8, 15-9 victory.
Newport Harbor and Santa
Barbara are both to be
applauded for their efforts.

football, a tournament on the
freshman level would be
impossible due to logistics.
There's no way to play more than
one game in a day and any truly
meaningful tournament would
consume too much time to
complete.
In th1s case, taking a stint on
the vanity playoff team offers the
next-best alternative.
Newport Harbor didn't bring
up any freshmen for its
postseason run toward a CIF
Southern Section Division V title,
but a handful of Mustang frosh
made their way on to the
expanded playoff roster.
Jimmy Herzog, a combination
running back\linebacker, joined
his brother Steve on the varsity.
Shawn Perryman, who plays on
the offensive line and at
linebacker, is another freshman
who made the jump along with
David Weir (fullback/linebacker)
and linemen Robert Hieliger and
Chas. Newton.
Their stay lasted only one
game as the Mustangs lost 14-0
to Sunny Hills in a first-round
Division VIIl game, but the expe-
rience should prove invaluable
down the line.
