. challenges to the •
wardrobe department. Just con-
sider the lavish handmade cos-
tumes that boast moie than 150
yards of weighty fabncs. 800
yards of lwninous ribbon and
too many gold buttons to count.
"This is ooe of the few shows
wh~ the men's costumes have
more trim than the women's,•
said Michael Pacciortni, assistant
to Srugeru Yaj1, the production's
costwne designer.
"Tartuffe: dircded by David
Chambers, is a comedy that
focuses on the hypocrisy of its
day and re.roams timely more
than 300 years later. The pro-
duction premiered at SCR's
opening season in 1964 and was
. staged again in 1975. Laurie
Donati, whose "first hand" role
keeps her busy sewing and fit-
ting right up until opening night,
said the costume shop, overseen
by Arny Hutto, gets down to
business about four weeks
before the production.
SCR's costwne shop staff,
which includes Donati, Conni
Joslin (cutter), Jil Kaisa Hunter
(wardrobe supervisor) and
Joyce Littrell (wig maintenance
technician) is expanded when
the play's wardrobe screams for
more hands ..

an assortment of quick mend-
ing tools, plus a small flashlight
and scissors hung around her
neck, Hunter said she is usual-
ly prepared for most wardrobe
emergencies.
"I am loaded with needles
and several colors of threads, a
wax to make z.ippers glide if
they gef stuck, toupee tape,
which works like strong double
tape and sticks to skin and fab-
ric, safety pins, shoelaces, crazy
glue or some kind of adhesive,

that illustrate a gripping saga
about gold fever and the pio-
neers who caught it are captured
in "Gold Rush,• an award·win-
n.ing PBS documentary narrated
by John Llthgow.
And though "Tartuffe" has a
small cast or 13, with a total of
17 costumes, odditional cutters,
first h ands, stitchers, a tailor
and crafters (wigs and acces-
sories) were brought in to help
with the ornate costumes made
from rich fabrics of brocade,
silk, taffeta and lace.
"One coat that Cleante

buttons," said Donati, a Costa
Mesa res1dent who received
training at OCC.

the Cosfo Mco;a Classic Jan 2-3.
AYSO Region 120 hosted the
tournament and games were played
at a vancty of locations m the New-
port-Mesa Unified School Disbict.
The tournament included 176 teams
from 0fdnge County and other parts
of CaWomia, with some tedl'nS trav-
elling dS far as Davis. There were 22
flights in dll c1.nd the top four teams in
each Hight were awarded medals.
The Girls with Attitude consisted

'Gil' KNUDSON
While some boaters have
the notoriety, few have
contributed so much to
boatfug as Newport
Beach's Giltner Knudson.
y sailor worth his or her
alt has an awareness of
e names Ullman, Ficker,
Cayard and Schock.
Each of these people reached
a level. of success representing .
the pinnacle of achievement in
their chosen career or spa.rt. .
What made these sailors
excel? What made them win a
race or two or three, build a
bettei'boat or design a super
sail? Was it their bodies, their
brains, blood blisters or bankroll?
More than likely, 1t was a
combination of each of the
above.
There are others.that have
contributed as much to the
boa.ting community; with names
probably not as recogniZable.
Such a man was Newport Beach
boaqng legend, Giltner "Gil"
Knudson.
Mr. K.iludson passed away on
Jan. 2 this year. ln his 80 years,
he contributed much t9 the
•aero-dynamic industry, auto
racing and to boa.ting.
He was a graduate of Cornell
University and made his mark as
a mechanical engineer with the
Bendix Corp. In 1960. he was
transferred to the Newport
Beach office of Bendtx and
regamed his childhood interest
m sailing.
He sailed 111 over 1,500 boat
races dunng his career, never
telling anyone how many: he
won and especially how many
times he did not fnush m the
money.
"I think Gil's favorite win was
when we won the U.S.
Presidenti.il Trophy in 1992 and
first place for best-corrected time
m the NewporMo-Ensenada
Race aboard his boat 'Tigress.'

fnend and sailing buddy Jerry
Molton.
"Gil loved to race anything,
cars, boats, he even raced his
next door neighbor in a palm
tree growing race to see whose
tree would grow the tallest. Gil
was a real character and, believe
me, the world is a better place
because of the likes of Gil
Knudson,• Molton went on to
say.
Gil was an mventor and avid
snow skier. While al Bendix,
knowing they were going to
close down the Newport
location, be started ~oonlighting
by designing manne parts. He
created a hatch-holder spring
that would open and close a
hatch cover and received a U .S.
Patent for his design in 1970
Since that time, millions of

eruption at halftime, did all he
could, rifling through three time-
outs in a span of 1:21.

comeback, never led again.
