'BRIDGING' COMMUNICATION Residents will have their say on the bndge issue this week, as county and local officials hear suggestions on what should be included in dn environmental '>ludy. Whether the county should proceed with plans to build two bridges linking Costa Mesa with Huntington Beach dt 19th Street and at Gisler Avenue has been a c;ub1ecl of heated debate for years -- LOSSES CLEAN WATER IS comv Clean water in the Back Bay could come at a high price -in the millions, city officials said. The Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board is pl an- ning to establish · standcUds for acceptable quantities of pathogens -disease-causing nucroorgarusms or viruses in the water. Although oty offia als agree it's a good idect, it may mean Newport Beach will be forced to unplement programs aimed at keeping the water clean, including a pre~ously proposed law banning bird feeding. TEENS SENTENCED 1\vo local teens received the maximum 13-year sentence after pleading guilty to breaking into the Newport Beach home of a female classmate and beating her father repeatedly with d baseball bat and a flashlight. The girl's reldtionship with her father apparently hdd been strained by a domestic dispute. "You can't argue with dnyone that Uus was a serious offense,• Judge Ronald Owen told one of the boys, who are both 17. "You felt tha t you were protecting the [victim's) daughter, but it was probably the dumbest thing you can do.• The teens will spend their time at the California Youth Authority. Loca Is split on b ri d ge d ebat e ---- •THE ISSUE: County, cities tonight begin collecting input from residents before launching study of proposed bridges linking Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach. I am responding to your bridge article of :Jan. 20 ("public g{>ts its say about two bndges") I feel a question should be asked· Does it rOa.ke econonuc sense to Costa Mesa lo ~end 19th Street to Huntington Beach? And cow~ I feel very posibvely that it d~. It makes tremendous sense econorrucally to our is a smaller bridge over 19th Street as a means of continuing local trafhc. It could be a small- er bndge for accepting less traffic into the res- idents of the West Side, who are con cerned about the traffic impact. But minimally, I feel a bridge ...-even one like the wooden bridge that connects University lo the Eastbluff side by the YMCA-Upper Newport Bay -would be helpful for blkers or cyclists, walkers, hik- ers to the beach ... or for search and rescue- type things that the Police and Fire depart- ments may have to do rn tha t area. Have a bridge made of wood or some other matenal thdl wouldn't be acceptable to veh.i- de traffic. But I think the West Side area should be connected m some manner, so that people from Huntington Beach can cross over to 19th Street and catch the bus or bike nde or walk over with ~1er, Sdfcr and more secure I am against the 19th Street and Gisler Avenue bridges. There 1S enough traffic on 19th Street already. 11Us will only add to the congestion and pollution of that area. CHARLES SPENaR Newport Bea.ch Once again. We are back to the bridges. We thought the publl.C' had spoken, that they don't want any bridg~. And the story says the bridge debate peaked five years ago when the homeowners opposed the bridges. But obvi- ously, other forces are conung to bear, and we are going to be confronted once agam wt\h the bndges. From 1995 to 1998, the bett results ln open heart swgery of all types in Orange County have consistently been achieved at UCI Medical Cen- ter. We encourage everyone to look at the data available at www.heaJtbcarereportcard.- coaa . While these achievements do not in any way detract from the excellent results at Hoag Hospi- tal, perhaps a bit more clarifica- tion would be in order before one institution is called "the best.· EUGENE M. So I pulled him out of the public school altogether, out of the Newport-Mesa school distrk1 to a private ICbool. . I lniatrult the JCbool boa.rd 'memben, after they did not give anyone in my area {Killy· brooke and Paularino} any rea· sooable time to respond to the reopening of Davis as a fifth· and sixth-grade transfer center. OENAMARIE AREUANES Costa Mesa Each morrung when I wake up, J think of 'all the thitigs that I am thankiul for. .. I am thankful that I live in Orange County. I'm thankful that my car starts each morning, and I am thankful that my kids are not impacted by any of the pl.ans for school reconfiguration. I am thank.fut that my kids were able to make it through Harbor View Elementary School. as o k.indergarten-through-sixth- grade campus. I'm sorry they lost two years -s,venth and c.igl@ grade -on the ~ del Mar High School aunpus, but I .a.ro thankful they got to expenencc the wonderful teachers and ruenuous acade- mic classes there. 1 will never undemand why anyone would think breaking up the school experience makes it better. Remember when our great educators thought open class- room was ~tter? An elementary school should be kindergarten through sbtth grade; a separate junior high hould be seventh and eighth. It shouldn't be too hard to com- pare the a cademic achieve- ments, sports involvement and over4ll school spirit at EllSlgn vs. Corona del Mar seventh· and eighth·gruders. 1lh regard to .the Gisler Street bridge, I dOR't feel It makes economic sense at all to .. wand Gisler to Fountain Valley. And there dl'e opporturul.JPs to allow them to get to the access. The key to this IS in the next to the last paragraph in this artide, where it says New- port Beach lS m favor or us having bridges iD Costa Mesa. Well that 1s fine and well, except this 1S Costa Mesa and not Newport Beach, BIU. NYHOLM and we don't need any bridges. Just the open Costa Mesa space and the view is enough environmental impact to stop the bridges We don't need any more bridges, and we certainly don 't want to join with Huntington Beach, which is rampant with development My c:blldreo are being tom away from their home achool, from the neighborhood where they are growing up, by the Newport-Mesa school board's uncaring decisions and actions.
