DECK THE HALLS, DESPITE FALL Despite a nasty 18-foot fall he took while installing a cut- out wooden snowman on his roof earlier this month, Paul Davis's house at 1606 Lincoln Lane in Newport Beach will be in fine form for the holidays. In keeping with an elght- year tradition, Davis, 46, deco- rated the house with spectacu- lar Christmas trimmings -a Nativity scene, a train with elves, ducks, lighted trees and reindeer and candy canes to line the walkways. Davis is recovering from the fall, which shattered bis elbow and put him in the hospital for a week. TEMP.ERATURE: WARM Tonight's Costa Mesa City Council meeting has the poten- tial to stir up hot debate over old controversies -but chances are, things will be lukewarm. •First, the council is sched- uled to conduct its am\.Ual~ reV1ew of the Automobile Oub's development agreeµient -an issue that divided the communi- ty a couple of years ago as the club planned major expansion. But tonight, city staff is rec- ommending the council deem the club has complied with all conditions, and no debate or qp.RQsition is expected. • A request by the Philhar- monic Society of Orange Coun- ty to post 60 banners along Bris- tol and Bear streets and Sun- flower Avenue from Jan. 17 to March 6, also, duting different times, would have raised the ire of a particular councilwoman who found such promotional flags •trashy." But with Sandy Genis now retired from the council, city approval of the b~ers may be fairly smooth and swift. Chapt(!r 66 .A bitter pill :to swallow •But before everyone lines up to walk the plank there are some things you need to consider. By now, I'm sure, everyone has had some time to try to digest Saturday night's results at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Stadium, and for sure, 38-0 defeats are bitter pills no matter how you try to package them. You can put it in a capsule and the swallow may come easier, but the pangs in the stomach are not soothed. . Nevertheless, all of the Sailors need to keep some things in perspective before lining up for a collective jump out of the school tower. Some things to keep in mind: • Santa Margarita High's Eagles deserved the victory and the championship because they performed absolutely flawlessly. The Sailors didn't give anything away, Santa Margarita simply won with a style and flair not often seen in championship games. • Although the verdict was sealed at halftime, the Sailors (not unexpectedly) did not just cave for the remaining two qiiarters . . : • Please don't buy into that oki saying, ·Gee, I know you're tEirrific, but what have you done li(tely for me?" "She has great ball skills and she sets up her teammates. She's very crafty.· Senior midfielder Heather Marshall, jwlior defender Jordana Havriluk and junior fruward Lind- sey Grubbs (four goals last winter) are solid return- ing starters, while junior defend~ Boanie Watson and Meghann CJark also started last season. CdM's other three returning starters are senior forward/midfielder Kara Wtllgeroth, junior goalkeeper Heather Hritz and sophomore forward Meghan Bryan. 1Wo of the top freshmen are defender Julia Livingston and midfielder Kate Simon. Defender Jessica. Luchesi, foiwards Jaime Brownell and Jessica Edwards, and mid.fielders Marissa Becker and Elizabeth Morse are all freshmen who could stay on the varsity an9 con- tribute immediately. Marshall, a tough midfielder according to Etchison, anchors the center of the field and wins a lot of air balls, while Havriluk provides leader· ship in the baclc. Havriluk. dislocated her right elbow against El Toro last season in the second league game and missed the rest of the year. She will also share time with Hritz in the goal. Hritz was forced into the starting goalie posibon last season when Havrlluk got hurt. Of the freshmen, Livingston should be solid m • the back. while Simon is another scoring threat (with Mickler and Grubbs}. • (Uvingston) is a great defender one-on- one, •Etchison said. "She knows bow to win the ball, and when she does, she distributes real well and attaclcs real well. She's able to mark our opponents' best forwards and mark them real solidly.• -By Richard Dunn PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICH PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC· NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICES STARTING A.NEW BUSINESSff Can't seem to get to all those • repair Jobs around the house?
