I '' I I I ' I I I I I I I ~ peter buff a The gift of lwlidny trivia W hen it comes to Christ- mas, I'm a big fan. A big fan, that is, as long as you don't include my wife in the survey. Anyone who has been to our place between Thanksgiving and New Year's knows what that means. lf you haven't seen it, I can't explain it. What is my con- tribution to the decking of our halls? Nothing. Niente. Less than zero. But there is one area in which I excel: Christmas oddities and holiday trivia. If truth be told, I like any kind of trivia. The more useless, the better. Example: do you know where the expression "Watch your P's & Q's!" comes from? Do you care? Too late. In English pubs, the bar keep would run your tab on a chalk· board -"P" for pint, #Q" for quart. When you exceeded your fun limit, the bartender would point at you and say "Hey, you! Watch your P's and Q's.• As it turns out, England also plays a very important role in our Christ- mas traditions. A good old American Christ- mas is really a good old Victori- an Christmas. If Big Vic hersell were to drop by for a Christmas visit, she would feel quite at home. Likewise, Charles Dick- ens' depiction of Christmas sounds and feels familiar to us. The decorations. the gifts, the cards, the egg nog, the desserts, Christmas dinner built around a grand roasted bird, even the stockings on the mantle, would look much the same in London in 1866 as in Corona del Mar in 1996. The Christmas tree would also be a familiar sight, although adapted from the traditional German tannenbaum. In 1841, Mr. Victoria. better known as Prince Albert, ordered a huge, brightly decorated tree put up in Windsor Castle for the Queen and the Royal Kids. The queen said "we are amused, w the royal kids said •cool w and the rest is history. Our Santa Claus is a descen- dant of St. Nicholas, a 4th centu- ry Byzantine bishop who was known as a very kind man, especially to children. The tradi- tional Santa Claus we know best is from an illustration by Thomas Nast. You'd recognize it in an instant. Nast was a political cartoonist (the best ever, in m y opinion) in the 19th century. He was famous for his blistering caricatures of New York City's "Tammany Hall" politicos, led by the infa- mous Boss 1\veed. Nast based his Santa on a lively poem about Christmas that first appeared in the Troy, New York, Sentinel in 1822. ' .... 1 2 72HOURS 'Mars Attacks' brain cells of anyone dumb enough to, watch By Uncle Don, Daily Pilot C becked out my razor the other day after shaving my back. Dull it was. Checked out my brain after a viewing of "Mars Attacks.• Duller it was. Sitting yet again in an aging theater that was nearly as empty as the Sports Arena during a Clippers game, I surveyed the audience. And wondered. What sort of pathetic human beings would waste a beautiful Saturday afternoon -the sun shining, the bh'ds tweeting, the grass growing -by watching a mind-bogglingly. brain-dead flick that is far worse than some of the neighborhoods in which it was filmed? They couldn't have all been editors and columnists. As silver saucers emerged from the red planet. tinny period music flatulated from the screen. They're coming, they're after us, and where do you think they'll strike first? Incredibly, not at that usual disaster magnet, a trailer park, although the Martians will eventually make an obligatory appearance. Naw, this a version of (among other things) "The Day the Earth Stood Stoopid. • Landing in Washington, D.C., the Martians are there to negotiate. The idiot Congress (probably liberals) falls for it. Short- er than Spud Webb, nastier than James Carville, uglier than a '72 Pacer, we don't know why they're here, what they're gonna do or when this gawdawful mov1e's gonna end. Your Favorite Unc guesses there's some sorta joke going on with "Mars Attacks,• but it sure ain't worth the thought processes to flgger it out. I also guess there was some symbolism, satire, metaphor and simile, but the continual yawning process caused shutting of eyes, closing of ears and a general lack of attention. And, of course, Jim Brown, leading a dirty half-dozen through hellfire and brimstone, saaificing himself on the altar of overacting. Well, kind of. By Christopher Goff a rd, Daily Pilot B y now everyone should know the truth about Dean Koontz, the New- port Coast resident who spends 70 hours a week writing about sociopaths, knife-kill freaks and the blackest precincts of the human psyche: He is a shy, gen- tle-mannered man with a dimple thl;\t shows when he laughs, which is often. Nevertheless, public miston- ceptions persist in dogging the 51-year-old suspense novelist - and probably always will. ·1 don't like this scary-guy, horror-writer image,• said Koontz, relaxing in the l.JVing room or his three-story hilltop mansion. "That's what I try pur- posely not to play into ... It's just odd to me that people will think you are what you write." Koontz explained that when rans approach his wife, Gerda, thelf favorite comment is this: "He must be kind or strange to UV{' Wlth • "She would probably agree, but for totdUy different reasons than they think,· Koontz scud. "Whdt's odd 1s that a lot of my novel~ have a lot ol humor in them, and nobody seems lo think in pnvate life I must be a pretty funny guy." That humor comes to the fore in Koontz's latest book, a chil· dren's tale in rhyrrung verse btled "Santa's lWi.n. • Touted by publisher HarperPrism as "the first ma1or new Christmas story in decades,· it tells the story of Santa's wicked twin, Bob Klaus, and tus attempt to spoil Christ· mas. Only a palf of little girls stand between the villain and success. Pa rt of the book's charm derives from 32 full-color, gorgeously demented paint· logs by Phil Parks, with whom Koontz has collaborated o n ~An American Cafe T~=y Americal Fal. 462 East 17th St 548-3066 NOW OPEN Mllllonatre Dean Koontz, who now makes blsbomeon 1be Newport Coast: •My wUeuyll were mar- ried literally with $150, a used car, and two bags of clothes.• MARC MARTlN I DAI. So I said. 1'll pre-buy all 32 paintings, and when it's done we'll split the book S0- 50.' • The book sold immediately, and Koontz said he expects a sell-out of . the 130,000 first printing. • 1 kind of see it as being a perennial Chrtst- mas book.• he said. •1 bad so much fun with tt.• But to predict bot sales for a Koontz project is hardly daring. His novels have 801d more than 170 million cope. in 38 lan- guages, and only a handful of other wrlten can claim his hOlllle- hold-name status. The suocea, wbich antved after 15'years ot dues-paying, has permitted him to live in a 17- room, $3-mlllion mansion where he enjoys an easy rapport with a squad of assistants, housekeep- ers, and whatever handymen or painters happen to be there on a given day. A guest who com- plains of a headache will receive aspirin and a glass of water on a silver platter. Among the treasures furnish- ing the house are Sung Dynasty funerary jars, a French table of inlaid woods dating from 1850. and what be estimates are between 16,000 to 17,000 books. In his upstairs office he keeps a copy of every edition of every book he's had published, includ- ing audio versions. In one room he keeps a sophisticated Celestron telescope, Intended for stargazing. which ls fixed on one of the buildings at Fashion Island. Koontz has never learned to use tt. Downstairs is a weight room with elaborate machines and shiny free weights. Koontz doesn't use that room much, either. Describing himself as •easily bored,• Koontz said. "People always ask me, 'What are your hobbies?' I don't have bobbies. I don't golf. I like good food and stuff, and I write.• The lack of other interests helps explain Koontz's ferocious output. which exceeds 60 novels. •1 did it for a lot of years before I made any money out at • it," he said. "When I first started getting a lot of money for books, I would see these reviews that would mention the money, and there would be a tone in the review like, 'Well. this is why be does it.' Well, then I must be amazingly stupid, because I did this for 15 years struggling to make a living. Why did I keep it up so long? There was nev~ any real prospect. "My wife and I were married literally with $150, a used car, and two bags of clothes. We both came from poor families.. We had absolutely nothing. We started out as1anto-wn on the food Chain as you can gel We had literally zip .• Koontz recalled the reaction of some fellow writers when he struck the motherlode of com- mercial success. "The first thing they said to me was, 'Man, when you finish this contract, you'll never have to write again,'• he said. •And I've never gotten over that. What would I do with the rest of my life? What. would I take up plumbing? And that was a reve- lation to me. It meant that a lot of people don't do it out of love.• If afDuence comes as a wel- come byproduct of Kootz's pur- suit of bis obsessions, however, being one of America's most rec- ognizable writers is a grimmer consequence. In fact, he recently shaved his mustache •trying to get away and remain anony- mous.• nHOURS 17 people. "You don't want to become so turned inward that you end up writing only about yourself, which is what I think sometimes happens when writers become famous.• Koontz, who moved into the Harbor Ridge home six yeaIS ago, is developing four lots span- ning 2 1/2 acres on Pelican Hill. His books often take place in Southern California, a setting he calls "endlessly fascinating.• In Fueling his work is •a horrible child- hood" In Bed.ford, Pa. where Koontz lived In constant fear of his violently alcoholic father, who tried to kill him in later years. The experience shows itself in the handful of themes that dominate Koontz's fiction: aber- rant psychology, the nature of evil and the ability of people to transcend traumatic beginnings. •fame is no good at all,• he said. "That I could do without In a minute. People are nice. (But) when every day, when you go out to eat, or you go to the mall, you cannot conduct your busi- ness as normal.• Celebrity poses creative dan- gers, he said, because "when you are conscious of being observed, it's not easy for you to observe, and what you have to keep doing as a novelist is always observing an upcoming book, he said, snlil- ing, "I trash and blow up a lot of stuff In Orange County. I blow up - a yacht on the harbor. Actually, I blow a yacht into the Balboa Sea Wall." Koontz's work often concerns "peo- ple who don't have families who set out to build their families,• he said.
