married and has no children, the

Vietnamese families were given
permission to lea\le the camp once
they were sponsored by an Ameri-
can. Franco was the family's second
sponsor. The tµst sponsor died a
week after she took the family in -it
was also a week before Christmas,
1975.
The first sponsor had received
$300 per famil¥ mer;iber from the
government to help resettle the fam-
ily with lodgings, but once she died
they were without a home.

married Duane Wmden, a professor
at Brigham Young University in

A handful of loyal fans found themselves out of luck Thursday afternoon when they con-
verged at Orange Coast College to watch the Ohio State Buckeyes hold practice for
the big game.A security guard gave the word: This is a closed practice.
Only a squad of reporters -from ESPN to the Pasadena Star News to WBNS
from Columbus, Ohio -were allowed near the players, who ran drills in preparation for
next week's Rose Bowl game in Pasadtma·against Arizona State University.
It was a chilly afternoon, and fans huddled together at a fence to watch the players
l scurry around on the distant field.

•Family of Isaac Justice say they bear
no ill will toward man who allegedly
struck budding artist in accident.

COSTA MESA -When Nate Justice started
working at a local Starbuck's recently, people often
mistook him for his 25-year-old twin brother, Isaac.
Isaac had already worked at the coffeehouse for
years, and the clientele knew his name.
Nate didn't

Isaac Justice was an aspiring artist who lived
with his family in Costa Mesa.
Around 10:22 p .m. Tuesday he was riding his
motorcycle when a pickup truck driver attempting
a left-band twn from 20th Street onto Placentia
Avenue struck him. Isaac died at Western Medical
Center in Santa Ana early the next morning.
The driver of the truck, 33-year-old Jose Her-
rera Ocampo of Costa Mesa, was arrested on sus-
picion of vehicular manslaughter but was relea.se<C
without bail Thursday.

dropping a 56-40 decision in the
tint round of the Canyon High
boys basketball tournament
Thursday afternoon.
It was the third straight game
the Mustangs have been faced
with Saddleback -having met
the Roadrunners in a tournament
game on the Costa Mesa campus,
followed by a scheduled non-
league game the following Tues-
day.
And now in the opening round
of the Canyon Tourney, another
meeting.
Mesa won the first time by 12,
but subsequent duels resulted in
a 14-point loss and Thursday's
56-40 defeat at the hands of the
7-4 Roadrunners, dropping Costa
Mesa (2-7) into today's consola-
tion round at 3 p .m.
Six-foot point guard Matt
Chaisson, entering with a 15.1
scoring average, led Costa Mesa
wiiji 16 points, but from there it
dropped off sharply.
Saddleback's work on the
boards early and often proved to

I hung up the phone smiling. I
bad just been called to review
•Tue Crucible,• one of my
favorite stories.
I went to see the movie with
my friend, Heidi, at Big Newport's
Stadium Theaters. Those are
incredibly awesome. Every seat is
a good seat, and the arm rests
move up and down to make the
seat more comfortable for cou-
ples. Of course, I put up the arm
rest to take up
two seats and
be extremely
comfortable
while watch-
ing a classic
tale of witch·
craft, truth
and so-called
justice.
The movie
started out
differently
than tl'le play. KaUe Hodetler
The audience
witnesses the "witchcraft" for
themselves. Abigail Will.lams
(Winona Ryder), along with the
other girls in town, are dancing in
the forest by a fire when discov-
ered by The Rev. Parris (Bruce
Davison), Abigail's uncle. The
next morning, two of the dancing
girls cannot wake and a rumor of
witchcraft Is floating around.
The movie wasn't as great as I
expected it to be, although a few
scenes toward the end had me
squeezed into 11 tight ball in one
of my cha.irs. It also was not
exactly like the original play, but
Arthur Miller did write the
screenplay, so lt remained his sto·
ry. Daniel Day-Lewis did an
excellent job portraying John
Proctor and Ryder was chilling as
the manipulative Abigall. I did
like the movie, but it Ls a second
to the original play. It you haven't
read or seen the play, then the
movie ls definitely worth seeing.

VISion of Sugar Plum Fairy dancing in her head

T he last time my mother saw
a live performance of "The
Nut.cracker" ballet was in
Japan. Some 50 years ago.
And me? I was a 31-year-old
•Nutcracker" neophyte -I'd never
seen a live version of the holiday
ballet.
So the Joffrey Ballet of Chica-
go's "Nutcracker• at the Orange
County Performing Arts Center
proved to be a perfect hotlday gift
for this mother-<iaughter team.
The night proved even more
magi.cal since we saw the opening
show on Christmas Eve, which
was also my mothets 60tb birth-
day -and, we later found out, also
the birthday of the late Robert Jof-
frey, the visionary of the famed
ballet troupe's version of "The
Nutcracker.·
For a somewhat jaded journal-
ist, "The Nutcracker" was the per·
feet holiday antidote, a glittering
show that made me wish I'd con·
tmued those ballet lessons I took
so long dgo, Ill the early stages of
elementary school.
Actually, the Jo(frey's "Nut·
crdcker· could be better described
as a gala musical production,
rather lhdll simply a "ballet.•
While the dancing was impressive
and beautiful, I was awed by the
staging, the glittering sets, the col-
orlul costumes -all of which trans-
formed the Perlorm.ing Arts Center
into a true fantasyland.
There were plenty of young-
sters in the audience, and I oohed
and aahed along with them over
the spuited music, elaborate sets
and props. And with a two-hour
total running time -including the
mterm.ission -this show ls tailor·
IThlde for typically antsy children.
While the second act, set in
"The Kingdom of Sweet5, • is per-
haps the best known and widely
recognized element or "The Nut·
cracker,· my favorite segment was
"The Land of Snow· sequence
ln a Wllltry glen with sparkling
"snow· falling softly, the Snow
Queen and Kmg danced a beaub·
ful pas de deux. accomparued by a
