King, rarely have to fend off autograph seekers, but they are among about a dozen resi- dents who have garnered name recognition from their appearances on Costa Mesa 1V Channel 62. First-time City Council- woman Heather Somers' appearances on the cable channel may have contributed in part to her recent election, city officials say. Unlike public access televi- sion, Channel 62 offers only city programming. It operates with $150,000 to $200,000 budget. Other local cable channels are Channel 61. which pro- vides live nightly news pro- gram, and Channel 3, which offers public access. Bergeson calls news premature. By Michelle Terwilleger, Daily Pilot A senior administrative official in the gover- nor's office on Friday denied published reports that Gov. Pete Wilson was preparing next week to announce an expansion of the state's class- size reduction program to fourth-grade classes. But the official, who asked to remain anony- mous, said the governor's advisers were pushing to have the program cover four grades instead of three. Under the current class-size reduction pro- gram, school districts may opt to enroll any three grades between kindergarten and third grade into the state program and receive $650 for each child. The governor's advisers want to keep the pro- gram limited to kindergarten through third grade, but want to allow districts to expand the program for all four grades, the official said. The governor has not decided how be will expand the program, the official said. Marian Bergeson, the governor's secretary of education and a former Orange County district supervisor, said the report that Wilson would announce funding of class-size reduction for fourth-grade classes was premature and incor- rect. Newport-Mesa Supenntendent Mac Bernd said he applauded expansion of the class-size reduction program, but that he is concerned about its funding. Newport-Mesa trustees sent a letter to the governor in November requesting additional funding for the current class-size reduction pro- gram. The district has unplemented class-stze reduction for first and second grades. ·1 believe our commuruty 1s willing to make •SEE WILSON PAGE A12 r----------------, Trying to keep pate I I ' I I ' I I ' I \ I> I \ l,JXJMI ..... Home of the year selected by the Orange Coast Association of Realtors The Laguna Beach home is constructed with fire retardant materials . I A Laguna Beach residence that was the July recipient of the Orange Coast Association of Realtors Pride of the Community award has been selected as "home of the year" by the organization's design committee. According to Patricia R. Moore, RCE. CAE. executive vice president of the associati on. the home wa'i ~elected from the previous monthly honorees for its overall exceptional design. Owned by Mel Lewis. M.D., the contemporary-style residence features an aesthetic interior/exterior constructed entirely from fire retardant materials. "Each month the association honors a home with the Pride of the Community award because it beautifies a particular Orange County neighborhood through its exceptional interior. exterior and/or landscaping design," Moore said. "Selecting an overall winner from the many honorees wa'i a difficult task for the design committee. Dr. Lewis' home The Laguna Beach home chosen as •home of the year"' by the Orange Coast Association of Reallors has a unique history in that it was recently rebuilt after having been destroyed in the Laguna fires three years ago. The design proved especially interesting because the unique fire retardant design clements that were incorporated were both functional and aesthetically pleasing." Situated on a ridge overlooking the Laguna Canyon and Pacific Ocean, the home, which was designed by Thomas Burger & Associates in Newport Beach, boasts a metal roof with wide ovcrtw.gs, stainless steel garage doors on dual garages flanking the entry, a custom- desigoed steel balcony, an interior steel staircase and deck railings made of metal. Gallery windows filter soft lighting and help to heat the large home. In addition, warm accents and interior furnishings were chosen to highlight the owner's extensive contemporary art collection and help to soften the bard- cdge angular look of the industrial fire resistant materials. · .. Receiving the borne of lhc year award from the Orange Coast Association of Realtors is an overwhelming honor," Lewis said ... Earning the initial Pride of Community Award was gratifying and this is just the icing on the cate." Established in 1929, the Orange Coast Association of Realtors is comprised of nearly l,500 real estate professionals n:presenting 642 real estate brokerages throughout Newport Beach and the surrounding communities. The association provides its members with a wide range of support services including n:gular communication designed to inform them about modifications and impending changes in the industry, lcgislatjve support, DRE-approved . seminars and computer courses and access to multiple listings as well u reference material.
