COSTA MESA -The sight of bare pine
trees stuffed into dumpsters after Christ-
mas saddens Mary Ann Anthonisz, who
reuses her not-so-traditional tree year
after year.
Anthonisz also keeps her tree through
the first week of January as she and
friends celebrate the Feast of Epiphany on
Jan. 6 -a Christian holy day when the
three kings visited the infant Jesus and
brought him gifts after his Dec. 25 birth.
"People get rid of the spirit of Christ-
mas,• said Anthonisz, 28. "For us it
(Christmas) starts on the 24th and contin-
ues through Jan. 6."
Anthonisz, and her roommate Imke
Bomer, 56, are both immigrants whose
families live abroad. They m~t about five
years ago and began their own Christmas
tradition, celebrating with an extended
family of friends on the Feast of Epiphany.
They also combine traditions from
Malaysia and Germany. On Christmas
Day, they had turkey with sauerkraut and
cous cous. On Jan. 6, instead of giving
gifts, they serve specialty foods such as
black sesame cakes that are said to bring
prosperity those who eat them.
-"Imke and I have adopted each other,"
Anthonisz said. "She is my German mom
and I am her Malaysian daughter."
Anthonisz has not seen her family since
she moved to the .United States seven
years ago.
This is their Christmas Day. They don't
claim to be religious, but rather "univer-
sally conscious."

made explosive· devices were
found near an apartment building
on the 1900 block of Maple Street
Sunday afternoon, several hours ·
after an apparent blast damaged
a window in a nearby unit, police
said.
The devices tvere described as
"small and of. unusual design."
They were found by residents of
, the 20-unit apartment building,
and later confiscated by an
Orange County Sheriff's Depart-
ment bomb. squad technician.
"They looked like fairly crude,
low-grade explosives,• said Sgt.
Clay Epperson of the Cqsta Mesa
Police Department.
"But because they were home-
made and we did not know how
stable or unstable they were, we
called in the experts.•
Police said residents of the
apartment buildingcanedabout ~
a.m. reporting they heard explo-J
sions nearby. '
"People heard two explosions,
and someone called bpck later
and said their window was bro-
ken,• said Sgt. Bob Durham. No
injuries were reported.
The broken window w as
believed to have been caused by
shockwaves from one of the
explosions, Durham said. No oth·
er evidence was· found at the
scene, and there were no evacua-
. tions.
At 12:17 p.m., however, resi-
dents of the apartment building
called back to report finding three
makeshift devices near the com-
plex. P-olice responded and
secured the scene, and the bomb
squad was called in.

people, we didn't want to handle
(them),• Durham said.

Council plan may force
property owners to pay
for· SJlalimar cle~up .

COSTA MESA -The recent
passage of Proposition 218 may
preclude the city from imposing a
$3.3 million special tax on Shali-
mar Drive property owners to
clean up the blighted area.
The new initiative requires
that a majority of property owners
essentially agree to levy the prop-
erty assessments on themselves.
On Monday, City Council
members are expected to recon-
sider creating the assessment dis-
trict on property owners. •
"Sixty days ago they said they
would do it on their own and they
haven't done that,· City Council-
man Joe Erickson said Friday.
City Council members voted in
Novembe_r to tentatively post-
pone imposing the assessment
district for 60 days.
But despite the city's warnings
to bring it back, city officials say
property owners hadn't taken the
necessary steps to voluntarily
clean up the alleys.
Mayor Peter Buffa said the city
has not determined whether it
will be able to enforce the assess-
ment district following the pas-
sage of Proposition 218.
·1 am not sure we know that
yet,· Buffa said. "With new legis-
lation or a new initiative, it's real-
ly hard to tell. We are taking it
one step at a time.·
So far, just a few property own-
ers have ta.ken the initial steps to
make the improvements them-
selves, according to a report by
the public services department.
"It turns out they Haven't all
done it, so it's coming back for
review,• Erickson said.

Motorists now can be slapped
with penalties of at least $1,350
for a first offense if they fail to
show police they have the insur-
ance required by law. A second
offense doubles the amount.
Local police seem enthusiastic
about the new Department of.
Motor Vehicles law, though-they
have had only a few days so far to
,mforce it.
"It's a good law -we like it,•
said Costa Mesa police traffic Sgt.
John Phenin. "This is something
the average police officer is really
going to be behind, because he
,..-has· to pay insurance. This way
the rates should go down."

"Cyclist dies of injuries
after traffic colliSion
A bicyclist critically injured in
a traffic accident near the inter-
section of Harbor Boulevard and
Wilson Street last week died of
his injuries on Saturday, an
Orange County Coroner's office
spokeswoman said.
Jeffrey Lynn Watson, 46, was
pronounced dead at 12:12 p.m. at
Western Medical 'Center in Santa
Ana, where he· was rushed after
the Dec. 31 crash. •
Watson, who coroner officials
identified as a transient, died
from massive head injuries be
sustained in the accident.
According to those who saw
the crash, an allegedly intoxicat-
ed Watson turned from Harbor
Boulevard into the eastbound
lanes of Victoria Street, and
directly into the path of a four.

turn, Watson ran a red light.
Those who saw the Mazda
strike Watson said the bicyclist
flew into the air on impact, then
crashed into the car's windshield,
where he remoined until the car
completed a 180-foot skid.
Watson was not wearing a heh
met, but to the ama:rement of wlt-
nesses, appeared ·to have sur-
vived the crash.
The driver of the Mazda, 19-
year-old Ryan Cherney, said he
thought Watson had been killed.

officials said the cause of the .acci-
dent is still under investigation,
b'1t said it is 'Unlikely that Cher-
ney will be charged in Watson's·
death.

auto grand theft
Two juveniles were arrested
on suspicion of grand theft auto
late Saturday, after a ·c osta Mesa
police officer observed the pair
walking away from a stolen
minivan on Baker Street, police
said.

The two male suspects, a 15-
year-old Tustin resident and a 16-
year-old from Westminster, were
parked on the 700 block of Baker
Street when they were noticed,
said Sgt. Clay Epperson of the.
Costa Mesa Police Department.

them, and they observed his
police car, and then began react-
ing very suspiciously and ner-
vously• and allegedly attempted
to flee on · foot southbound on
Randolph Street, Epperson said.

The Huntington Beach-based
Casitas Co. began providing
Cannery Village security in
December, charging $1,600 peI'
weekend. After a few weeks, the
company reduced the number of
security guards and its price to
$640 per weekend because "it
wasn't as bad as they expected,"
Hamilton said.
Police haven't noticed a mear
surable drop in problems in the
area but appreciate the efforts,

of the dead car's engine or chassis.

bor High wrestling coach Darryl
Holiday has reason to be a happy
man these days.
His Sailors are shaping up to
be a real force this season and
they proved it-once again this
weekend by finishing in sixth
place at the Estancia High 32-
Way Tournament.
Host Estancia, expected to
'challenge for the title in the Pacif-
jc Coast League this season, fin-
~hed-a-disappointing 29th in the
i33-te&il field. Emilio Gomez, at
.152 pounds, was the only Eagle to
advance to second -day action
where he lost in the first round of
consolation.
The Eagles got some shocking
news before the start of the tour-
nament that longtin\e head coach
Dave Jones llad resigned his posi-
tion 'u of this past Thursday.
"He hated to leave, but he got
a new job -a very high-paying
job that be couldn't pass up,• said nm Parsel. the school's athletic
director. ·we sure hate to lose
him. He was a walk-on coach and
he actually had been taking his
vacations during the wrestling
season to have a couple months
with the team. He was sacrificing
a lot to be here with the kids.·
Parsel said be expects current
assistant Greg Poole to take over
the team, but "we're not sure
what we will do yet." ·
"If there's anybody who wants
to work with the program." Parsel
said. "We sure could use the help
right now."
While the situation at Estancia
ts up in the air, Newport
Harbor has never been in
better shape.
Senior Jason Deere
defended his heavy-
weight title for the third
straight year while fellow
senior Matt Large walked
away with the 112-pound
title.
Rigo Pinon, another ;
senior, took third in the Deere
119-pound class for the
Sailors while freshman Michael
Snyder was fifth at 189.
"this was the -best we have
ever-done," Holiday said. "Matt
had been beaten by his opponent
in the finals twice this season.
Rigo lost e. match ta the No. 1
seed. Snyder had never wrestled
before and he got fifth.
"And what can I say about
Jason? He's 13-1 coming right out
of football. His only loss was a 2-1
decision in the finals of the Silver-
ado Invitational (in Las Vegas).
He was up against a kid
that was 50 poundi big-,
ger than. him and Jason
lost a point for stalling
when he was only trying
to get ' control of the
guy."
Deere didn't leave
anything. to chance Sat-
urday, pinning Mike
Ketcham of Edison in the
third round for the title.
After receiving a first.
round bye, Deere pinned his next
opponent and then posted a
major decision to move into the
championship match.
"The adjustment from football
has been going pretty good,"
Deere said. "They both use the
saine kinds of movements and
wrestling is easier on my feet."
Deere is a two-time defending
Sea View League heavyweight
champion.
His second cousin, Dale Deere,
was out this way visiting and had
a chance to watch Jason in action.
He couldn't resist taking a picture
of bis cousin being interviewed
by a newspaper reporter.
"I wrestled high school in
Oklahoma back in the 1960s, •
Dale said. •1 remember getting
beat in the regionals, but then I
didn't have the genes this guy
has."
While the match between
Deere and Ketcham decided the
heavyweight championship, it
also decided sixth place in the
team competition. By virtual of
the win, Newport Harbor finished
with 98 points -3.5 ahead of sev-
enth-place Quartz Hill and four
ahead of Edison -and got to
bring home a team trophy.
Large, who was tops at 103 in
the Sea View League last season,
has moved up to 112 pounds this
time ar_ound.
He defeated his nemesis,
"Mats• Matsumoto of Fountain
Valley, 3-2, to take the Estancia
title. The only thbig that went
wrong for LMge, was a case of
heartburn following hi.I team's
post-tourney celebration at a
restaurant featuring pizza.
"That's about it,• Large said •
laughing. ·1 was ahead 3-2 so he
was basically trying everything to
tie nup. It was pretty furious there
at the end."
"They're developing quite a
rivalry,• Holiday added. •we
meet them again next weekend
(at the Magnolia Tournament)
and again at Five Counties (in
two weeks).
"This was a good win for Matt.
Good competition."
Holiday was especially happy
with Snyder's perf otmance. ·
"Mike never wrestled before,
but he's a coach's dream.• Holi-
day said. "Whatever he learns, he
uses. He goes out there with guts.
"It's really a good team. I
couldn't be more pleased with
how things are going.•

Sailors, 53-39, Saturday night.
It was a game the Tars (8-6)
were winning late in the third
quarter, but Ocean View Coach
Jim Harris' squad (11-4), which
features one of the best defenses
in Orange County, turned it up a
notch, causing Newport Harbor
to wilt in the last 10 minutes.
And without Pulido to patrol

Hirst said his team was pres-
sured harder by opponents in the
Rhode Island tournament during
the Sailors' recent trip there than
it was against Ocean View.
Newport Harbor committed
seven turnovers in the second -
quarter, and Jameson got into
foul trouble, but the Sailors still
managed to stay close in the first
half. Cunningham tied it, 14-14,
on a long jumper with 3:12 left.
but Ocean View outscored the
Tars, 10-3, by second quarter's
end for a 24-17 halftime lead.
"Yeah, we can be (an out-
standing team)," Hirst said, •and
that showed in the first three
quarters. Then you saw how hor-
rific we can be."
Three of Ocean View's regtl-
lars were on the bench for the
opening tipoff, and the Sailors
built a 7-6 lead when 1:19
remained in the first. thanks to
Cunningham's first three-point
bomb of the game.
Cunningham also finished
with five rebounds (two offen-
sive), two steals and one assist.
