with Deputy C1ty Manager Peg-
gy Ducey -put together the
Orange County Airport Alliance.

The surprise attack came
before dawn on a dimly lighted
part of Placenho Avenue. The
back portion of Fairview Park is
covered with a section of dense,
tall weeds with a dirt trail that
connects the Santa Ana River
with the busy thoroughfare.

A few months ago, Newport Beach fire
Capt. Tony DeTcvis had the thickest,
most well-groomed head of hair out
of any of his fellow worken; dt the City Hall
fire station. ·
Now he is one of 1 O bttld-headed guys m
dark blue uniforms you may sec roanung
around town.
For DeTeVlS, the choice wasn't his own-
he was diagno'led edrlicr th1s year WJth a
rare form of cancer called myeloma. which
s
attacks the bone mdrrow, and 1s undergoing
chemotherapy.
But for rune of his co-workers, their sud-
den baldness was a gesture of soltdanty and
support for a fnend.
Although DeTevts' disease is not curable,
the six-month chemotherapy treatment
should put it in remission ror two years, he
said. After that, DeTevis said he is hoping lor
a new type of bone marrow transplant for
which he will be able to donate his own
marrow.
Justin Carr, a firefighter and one of DeTl"·
vis' crew partners, said he dPc1dcd when he
learned of his friend's illness that he would
shdve his head as a sign of support.

Those individuals protesting

seUish. I suggest they come on

ceedings for what they are.
They might even get to a place '
where they could feel good

plaints.

the hardship placed on the
organizers of youth sports m
finding available field space for
the number of childreil wbo
want to play.
When you travel to most
communities outside Newport,
you find beautifill neighbor-
ho6ds with wonderful fields
and people who support the
e tf orts of youth sports so our
children will stay on the fields
and out of trouble.
Jn addition, both the soccer
and baseball leagues spend
their own money to mamtain
and unprove our belds, with lit-
tle help from the city and
school dhbict who benefit from
taxes and assessments paid by
the parents of these children.

mch magnifying glass, which
enlarged that tiny 6-inch picture.
Now that, ladies and genUe>men
of the late '90s, is what the ecirly
television looked like.
I resisted buying one of those
crazy inventions as long as I
could but find.lly gavl' in and

inch screen.
Looking b ck, I realize that
the programs we re rather odd. I

hood movie theater. Whatever
the reason was, the only movies

ation Commission will hold a spe·
oal meeting today in hopes of
finalizing plans for the Boruta
Canyon "banana belt" park.
Plans for the 33.5-acre park
have been in the works for sev-
eral months. The commission
earlier this year learned. it has
$5.9 million to build the park. tts
opposed to the previous $3.25.
million budget. Comnussioners
found out they had $3.25 million
to work with after planning a
pa.rk that woUld have cost $7
rrullion to build.
Last month, commissioners
clirected the project's landsca~
architect to craft a new plan that
Will !1t within the $5.9 million
budget but keep most of the
amcrutics in the original plan.
The meeting will take place
at 3 p.m. today in Cicy Hall, 3300

In Delany's first pro season,
he batted .333 and was voted the
Topps All-Minor League rookie
catcher while playing for
Calgary in 1978 in the Pioneer
League, before earrung a
promotion to Double-A.
But Delany, whose only sniff
of the big leagues came during
spring training in 1980 with St.
Louis, ran mto a le>gJam on his
way to fulfilling a dream of
playing in the majors. St Louis
had Ted Simmons, Steve SwlSher
and Terry Kennedy on its roster.

baseball scholarship to UCLA
and was twice the Bruins'
captam, was headed for UCI out
of high school to play for Coach

followed him to Westwood.
