Works of art are stacked neatly at the Orange County Museum of Art as a press tour moves slowly through the fadllty. FINAL TOUCH-UPS By Susan Deemer, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA.-City Council members plan to send a letter requesting the California Public Utilities Commission reconsider having two area codes within the city's boundaries. · · Costa Mesa is one of four Orange County cities the com- mission intends to split between the 714 and 949 area codes this October -a full six months before the standard waiting peri- od that state law stipulates. ·we don't question that fact that they are going to run out of telephone numbers, just that every city has a right to itheir identity," said Vmcebt Whelan, Costa Mesa's communications director said. Once an area code that defined Orange County residents from those in Los Angeles, the demand for 714 will split half of the county's residents when the new 949 area code is introduced. The new area code is needed because of the proliferation of high-tech innovations such as fax machines, modems, cellular tele- phones, voice mail and beeper numbers, said Pacific Bell spokesman Gary Sanderson. -HEATHER SOMERS • But city officials hope to either retain 714 or be switched over completely to 949. Councilwoman Heather Somers said she doesn't mind switchipg so long as the entire city is left in one area code. Somers questioned whether the commission has taken into consideration the needs of resi- dents, noting the change would be a hardship on many longtime residents and business owners. MI think it's ridiculous to force the city to split in half like 'that," Somers said. B0w~e the malevolent 8.balOne arid other gl),ost stories I have just finJsbed trying a ' case involving the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disney- land. It brought up Dn!mories of Balboa's haunted Jetty. Once upon a time almost every town had its haunted house. Usually, a haunted house got off to a good start by having something horrifying happen in it. A murder was probably the best foundation for a haunted house. However, anything of a terri- fying nature that happened in the house would do. Then the creaks, groans, squeaks, clank- ing and rattling of any aging house escalated into terrifying proof that the house was really haunted. When I came to Balboa in 1921 I didn't have a very good background in haunted houses. Green River, Wyoming, from whence I had come, had no haunted house. It did have a whorehouse, but the sounds emanating from that house would hardly qualify as haunted house sounds. Then, when I arrived in Bal- boa at the ripe old age of 9, l discovered Balboa already had a haunt~ place firmly estab- lished. Only this wasn't a haunt- ed house. It was a haunted jetty. At that time there was only one jetty, the west jetty, and it was in a deplorable state. It was old and decrepit, not a bad back- ground for something to be haunted. And, its authenticity as a haunted place was without question. Its credentials stood finnly on three scary stories. The first story was that a giant octopus resided out toward the end of the jetty. However, the thing that gave the jetty its necessary frightening aspect • was the story that this giant octopus had once pulled an unwary fisherman off the jetty and devoured him. The next story was that one time a man was peeling abalone off the rocks at low tide. He caught his finger between an abalone and the rock. The abalone was so strong that the IJl4ll couldn't get his finger out and drowned when the tide came in. The third story, and this was the clincher, was that of a crazy old lady who haunted the jetty. You put those three stories together, and you have a real, authentic, gold-plated haunted jetty. When one is 9 years of age, new to the town, and the other 9-year-olds tell you stories like that you believe them. As far as I was concerned, the jetty was haunted. Of course, the stories were pure poppycock. There was not and never has been a giant octopus in this area. Oh, there are giant Octopi in other ar~as. but not here. Dur- ing my diving y~. I bumped into scads of octopi and never met one that was larger than 3 or 4 feet. AnY'flay, octopi are very timid·creatures, large or small. The abalone story was even more ridiculous. There never was an· abalone big enough to hold a man down when his fin-. gei was caught between the abalone and a rock. Anyway, the only abalone on the jetty were blacks, and blacks run about 3 or 4 incpes in size. The men get- ting abalone off the jetty were what we called "feelers.• They came at extreme low tide, felt around under the rocks, located an abalone and pried it off with a tire iron. Quite a few "feelers" were bitten by moray eels, but none were ever held down by an abalone. The crazy woman was a white-haired old woman who did come down and sit on the jetty almost every day. She was- n't crazy. Her husband had drowned off the Balboa pier, and bodies that drowned in that area usually came up at the 'jetty. Some people simply can't give up looking for loved ones lost in the ocean. Years later a young man drowned in the swf at IJttle Corona, and for a couple of years his father would· come down to the beach every week- end looking for his son's body. But he wasn't crazy. Neither was the old woman. • So the stories weren't quite gospel true. Nevertheless, they were good enough that pone of us would go out on the jetty. No, str. • R09IRT GARDNER is a retired judge and Corona del Mar resident. His col- umn runs every Tuesday. Corona del Mar chaffiber notes 40 years By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot In 40 years, the Corona del Mar Chamber of Commerce has grown from 25 members working to preserve the area's identity to 200 members responsible for big events such as the annual Christ- mas Walk. Tonight, chamber members will celebrate their 40th anniver- sary and install this year's new officers at a dinner at Five Crowns Restaurant. The chamber began in 1957 with local small-business owners who wanted to keep Corona del Mar's identity by maintaining the area's own postmark. longtime member Luvena Hayton said. It started out as a chamber and civic organization -and continues to have residents as members along with business people. The founding members also wanted attention that they could- n't get from the Newport Harbor Area chamber, which focused on larger businesses. "They wanted to help small business owners with their spe- cial problems," Hayton said of the Corona del Mar chamber pio- neers. Past members have included local artists such as Chuck Jones, creator of Bugs Bunny, and Ferd Johnson, creator \>f the Moon Mullins comic strip. The chamber has planted trees for the area, erected dolphin topi- aries on the street medians and put up floral banners above street signs. And though Corona del Mar no longer has its own post- mark, residents can still get it by request, Hayton said. ·we've been a busy bunch,· Hayton said. Presents ''Beyond the Living Trust'' Advanced Estate Planning Strategy Workshops We designed our "Beyond the Living Trust" Workshops as a forum to illustrate the techniques and strategies available for comprehensive and intelligent estate planning. A living trust should form the core of any sound estate plan. But, basic living trust planning is no longer enough for clients who want a comprehensive approach to their financial and family management. Individuals with estate larger than $600,000, and couples with estates larger than $1.2 million, need advanced tax strategies in addition to good living trust planning to avoid unnecessary erosion of their estate by taxes that range between 37-60%. And, its not only about your heirs. Advanced strategies can also benefit you during your life by eliminating erosion of your wealth by capital gains taxes. But, you don't need to be wealthy to benefit from Beyond the Living Trust planning strategies. You need advanced strategies to improve control over your assets while you are alive and well, or if you become sick or disabled. Advanced strategies are just as important if you want customized documents, rather than ''one size fits all" boilerplate, to help realize your hopes, dreams and aspirations for you and your loved ones' future . For the story, see Page 5. L---------------------------- 0 2-3 Newport Harbor watches as Woodbridge puts on a ·clinic in the art of dominating Sea View League duel. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot COSI"A MESA -Put wounded Warriors right alongside sleeping dogs when it comes to potentially dangerous adversaries one should just as soon let lie. The Newport Harbor High boys soccer team found this out the hard way Monday, as the Woodbridge Warriors (12-2-2, 3-0 in the Sea View League) rallied from an early two-goal deficit to leave Kaiser Elemen- tary School with a 3-2 win and sole p0sses- sion of the league's top spot. •(Woodbridge) showed a lot of charac- ter, and our guys were satisfied,• Newport Coach Ziad Khoury said of the visitors' utter and complete domination after Harbor (S-3, 2-1) took a 2-0 lead in the 25th minute. "We gave them the game.• Khoury could be forgiven for citing Sailor charity, but the War- riors' collective will might be a more fitting explanation for why the most important game of the season for both teams turned on its uis after Harbor senior Tobin Junowich directed a Garrett Jans- ma assist into the net to the approving howls of a large holi- day home crowd. The' goal, 20 minutes after Har- bor's Manuel Oporeza boomed a well-placed Chris Wa.kim pass past the Warrior goalkeeper into the net, matched the biggest deficit of the season for Orange County's sixth-ranked team. "The only other time we'd been down two goals was our 2-0 loss to Santa Ana," said Wood- bridge Coach John Szczuka, whose team bad nine shutouts coming in, and has DOW allowed more than one goal just thrice. "Defense has been our bread and butter, so I'm very pleased and proud our offense was able to take control of the game after we got down early." Khoury acknowledged as much. "They owned the last 70 min- utes," he said of the Warriors, who extended their winning streak to eight, while ending the Tars' three-game skein. Woodbridge's Chad Harris ignited the comeback with a scor- • ing blast in the 27th minute and Daniel Chun netted the equal- izer just minutes before halftime, after Eric Jensen flicked a Harris throw-in onto his foot about 20 yards in front of the goal. Striker Yi gall Kersenbawn, the Warriors' lead- ing scorer (10 goals) who was marked effectively and shutout by Harbor fullback Brett Baker, earned an assist on the game- winner in the 62nd minute. Kersenbau.m's corner kick sailed toward the near post, where a charging Kevin Fried- land directed it in with his body, past the oncoming Sailor goalie. Oporeza and Jansma each had chances to pull the Sailors even down the stretch, but their quality shots sailed just wide. "Our backs are against the wall," Khoury said. "We need to beat Irvine Wednesday.• --Szczuka, a former Warrior player who said the two teams have developed a •tremendous rivalry," noted the Sailors will be a team to be reckoned with. "I predicted ourselves, El Toro and Newport Harbor would finish in the. (league's) top three, and I believe (Newport) will beat one of the other teams once, and maybe both of us. It's a deep sigh of relief for me knowing we don't have to come to Newport ag~ this sea- son." .. . • · .. · ... ... .. " .. • . .... (tJ..S. 2.0) ....,.
