But a consulting company said more soft- ball fields could be added only if the larger baseball field was removed, or u the entire park was expanded onto land owned by DaVis Elementary School. Both optlons present tough choices for the aty, Roeder said. Under the first option, the aty could place four 275-foot softball fields at TeWmkle Park and Temove the baseball field At the same time, the softball field dt Lions Park would be converted to a baseball field. A problem for the private lugh schools and men's baseball leagues that use TeWinkle is that Llons Park otters a smaller field and has less parking, Roeder said. Under the second option, the aty would expand the park onto Davis Elementary School by removing the track at the school - a track which was last used regularly in the days when Davis was a Junior hlgh school. That is fine with the Costa Mesa Unified School DiStnct -if the city builds a new all- weather track at Costa Mesa Jiigh School, Roeder said That would add $310,000 to a project already budgeted at $1 million. "There have been some fairly strong emo- tions on the council about keeping the base- ball field at Te Wink.le,• Roeder sa.id. But Geiberger's unraveling on 18 -he missed a four-foot putt about two inches to the left - allowed for another line act in the Toshiba Classic, which featured a then-record nine-bole playoff in 1997 when Bob Murphy's 80-foot birdie putt beat Jay Sigel and a course-record 62 last year by Hale Irwin in the final round with the help of a bunker rake on 17 that stopped his ball from rolling in the water. "It was fun," Jacobs said. •1 hope people got a good show. This is what it's all about. We might be old .guys, but it was exciting. "If it's good entertainment and good competition, that's golf." In addition to the electrifying . . . four-man playoff, this yMt's Tbsh1- ba Classic raised $800,000 for the mAnaging cliontY, Hoag l:fiiip1t41 Foundation. With tennis at lndian We.lll cut- ting into the tournament'• live coverage on ESPN for the second day in a row, the Toshiba event stretched an extra 72 minutes for the viewing audience, :wbidl saw Jacobs and McCord make dra- matic eagles on the first playoff hole to eliminate Geiberger and Doyle. •Everybody Jcnows, the later you go (in a playoff), the deeper you get into prime time, and every station producer loves prime time," said McCord, better known as the lead color analyst on CBS golf telecasts. McCord never won in 376 .PGA Tour events and owns a license plate on his car that reads •No WINS,• but the animated McCord, making bis debut on the Senior Tour this year at the Tosbi· ba, ea.med a check for $180,000. M.cCord became the second golf er (Doyle was the first) to cap- ture victories on the Nike and Senior tours. . "It's amazing what this game does to you, just amazing,• ' McCord said. "I've been teµtng everybody how bad f am. Maybe aomebOay Channeled my OOCJY. Maybe it was Tiger Woods or David Duval." , McCord, who signed a three- year contract with CBS this year, said his agenda ot playhlg 12 events-on the Senior Tour this year will not change. •1 can't just say to CBS, 'Excuse me, I can't make lt th1s week, l'm sick,' • be said. "l can't do that. You've got to understand. I make a lot of money doing nothing with Tv. I enjoy the other things I dPf I get to hang with these guys frot,n Hollywood. That's fun. But I'll still play my 12 events. "I've got 40 corporate outibgs to do, 18 weeks of CBS and I've just finished my third book. I'm very fortunate)or a guy who can't play a lick. I'm doing a lot of fun stuff. I want to do everything - not just one deal." McCord. who will also co-pro- duce an upcoming motion picture about the life of fictional gambling golfer Titanic Thompson, started his playoff performance with an eagle on the first hole, matching Jacobs' eagle. Jacobs holed out (on 18) with a .. chip from 60 yards, then did a lit- tle dance on the fairway, taJdng a cue tram Cli1 Clif Rodrigue"Z and tumbling backward. Jacobs seemed to have the Vlctory locked up, but McCord's long eagle putt kept the playoff theater alive. McCord and Jacobs made par on 16, the second playoff hole, then made par on the next hole (17). Jacobs' tee shot on 17 was off the green, but he recovered and matched McCord with a tough, left-to-right putt from four feet. On the fourth playoff hole (on 18), both players went into the right rough, but used great second shots to set up pars. McCord missed a three-foot birdie putt on the hole to force a fifth and final playoff hole. McCord's excellent approach shot on 16 set up his birdie chance on the fifth playoff hole. In regulation, Geiberger wa.s in a horse race to the finish with a one-shot lead .heading to 17. Geiberger, though, birdied 17 for what seemed to be a comfortable two-stroke edge going to the fin· ishing hole, a par-5 that had played the easiest on the golf course throughout the final round, forcing only six bogeys.
