Authorities said both girls,
who are 10, were able to run
away from their abductor. In &th
cases the kidnapper was driving
a blue or green truck.

Police threw up a red flag
when they learned a light-col-
ored pickup truck was used in the
Garden Grove incident Sunday.
The girl was playing with some
friends outside her Sunswept
Avenue apartment complex
about 6:30 p.m. when a man
drove up beside her and got out
of his truck. He snatched the girl,
lhrew her inside of the truck and
drove away. The girl jumped out
of the truck in Santa Ana, when
he stopped for a light at an inter-
section.
A business owner took the girl
home, and her family contacted
police.
The man is described as a Lati-
no in his mid-20s, about 5 feet 10
inches tall, weighing about 200
pounds. He has black hair that is
combed back and was last seen
wearing a black shirt and dark
pants. He was driving d large
blue mid-1980s truck.
The Bluffs case occurred Feb.

planning process, city officials have
agreed to start looking at city planning
through a wide-angle lens.
City Council members approved four
actJons this week that they believe will go
a long way toward changing the way the
Planning Commission does business. The
commission approved the same game
plan last week.

planning approach for Newport· Center.
Staff and planning commissioners will
meet with property owners and develop a
scope of work, budget and schedule for

School senior Charlene Ubaldo, •because you
feel like you're all alone."
But Charlene was not alone on the Orange Coast
College campus in Costa Mesa on Tuesday .. she was
joined by more than 3,500 high school seruors who
flooded the quad for the college's 16th annual High
School Senior Day.
The idea, said college community relations director
Jim Carnett, was to show graduating seniors that the
25,000-student institution has a lot to offer.
"Senior Day has become something that is really
important for the college," said Carnett, noting that the
high price of four-year schools and increasingly stiff
competition for spots makes OCC the choice for many
young people.
"There are a lot of good students who have received
rejection letters in the last few weeks," Carnett said.
"We think we're well swted to meet their needs.•
This year, more than 2,200 students from the New-
port-Mesa Unified School district are expected to enroll
at OCC. The college places more students at four-year
universities than any other community college in South-
ern California, and that reputation attracts students
from all over, Carnett said.
·1 had a student and her mother come from Wash-
ington," he said.
But many seniors scud the glowing numbers were
less important to them than feeling at home on the cam-
pus. Senior Day offered students just that.
Fountain Valley High School senior Masayo Seiko
said she had been on the fence before coming to Senior
Day, but now she plans to attend the school.
Costa Mesa High School seruor Marlayna Davis said
she already feels comfortable at OCC. Her high school
is right across the street, and she even takes a psychol-
ogy class on campus. DaVlS srud she intends to spend
one semester at the college studying dance before
transferring to UCJ ·to become a divorce lawyer."

dependence on imported water.
The plant will be used to treat col-
ored ground water, which is
slightly tea-colored and has a1ul-
fur-like smell.
The plant, with a preliminary
estimated cost or $7 million, is
expected to be completed by July
2000.

concerns in the fall.

limiting the height of buildings to

storage tank to 1.25 million gal·

ATM spits out exactly the right
number of $20 bills without
going one over or one under?
(And if a machine does short
you, how would you ever prove
it? Conversely, if it gives you one
double-sawbuck too many,
would you tell the bank?)
Regardless of the other phe-
nomena that are out there on the
astonishment scale, they surely
pale when compared with the
organ most of us deal with on a
daily basis.
Consider that wondrous
mechanism that sits up there
beyond our shoulders. From that
vantage point, it controls our
lives. It controls whether we're
dumb or smart, whether we suc-
ceed or fail -even what time
we rise in the morning.
As a semi-retired gentleman, I
usually get up aiound 8 a.m. But
sometimes, I need an earlier.
reveille. So before I go to sleep, I
start thinking about having to

The next morning, I do just
that. It may be 6:58, or 7:02, but
I'm up. One morning last week, 1
needed to be ·up at the crack of
7. Mickey's big hand was on the

my eyes and reached over to
tum off the alarm clock. It went

Yes, I do set my alarm as a
backup. As some readers have

how Dr.Born actually knew the

Did the good doctor have some
sort of dipstick rigged up? I have
not been able to find out, so we
must take Born's word that the
juice actually did begin to flow
like the Santa Ana River after d

That was enough for him to

There you are: another mys-
tery solved.
It seems to me, then. thdt Born
and his colleagues could be on
the brink of being able to man-
age many aspects of human
behavior.
Barring some physical dam-
age, perhaps the mean could
become benevolent. the stingy
generous, the ignorant not quite
so dumb.
The potential here is a bog-
gier. It is commonly believed that
oniy a few kinks in the brain dte
all that separate a crirrunal mds-
termind from someone with the
capacity to cure at least some of
the world's ills.
Consider such monsters as

Could they have been forcPs of
good instead of evil 1l some doc-
tor had prescribed Jhe juice?
Why not if. as Born stdtes, tt 1s
the stuff that's bed to the •regu-

Orange County and the nation. One of
them is the outstanding effort put forth by
the Police Department.
More than 400 people turned out to see
the department honor its top achievers for
the year at an early morning banquet
Tuesday at the Hyatt Newporter.
The department handed out eight
awards to members of its force, for pro-
tecting residents from hann and putting
in extra hours after their day was done.
The event, sponsored by the Newport
Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce, also
furthered a syJllbiotic relationship
between the department and the commu-
nity. \.
"This is a way for the community to
honor the men and women who do suclt
an outstanding job of making Newport
Beach such a great place to live and
work,• said Richard Luehrs, president or
the chamber. "We sometimes take for
granted the safety of our city as a result of
the hard work by the Police Department.•
Police officials agreed that it was ben-
eficial to see the large tum.out.
"It's good for our employees because
they get to see how much the community
supports us,· said Lt. Doug Fletcher ·1

• Officer of the Year -Davtd Bying-
ton. an 18-year veteran who is the only
police officer in city history to receive hve
merit awards.
• Supervisor of the Year -Sgt. John
Freeman, who worked the special investi-

He is also a former Officer of the Year.
• Reserve of the Year -Alena Moon,
a former full-time officer who left the
department in 1994 to spend more tune
with her farruly.
• Ctvtllan Employee of the Year -
Charlie Beswick, also a former full-tune
officer, who came out of rellrement lo
work as the department's range master.
• Lllesavtng Award -Given to officers
Thomas Schomburg, Glen Gamty ..and
Damon Psaros, all of whom helped save
two people who attempted to conurut sw-
cide. In both cases, the officers convinced
the mdlVlduals not to jump off a build.mg
ledge.
• Merit Award -Detective Tun Arm-
strong received the award for solViog a
complicated fraud case that mvolved a
French atizen who swindled $129,000
from a Newport Beach car dealer

Srott's message in a bottle has
·turned into a d1saster relief cam-
paign for one of the thousands of
Hurricane Mitch victims trying to
put their lives back together.
Scott, a Newport Beach resi-
tlen l, last month received a letter
from Marcos Flores Bennudez, a
Honduran man who found Scott's
business card and two $1 bills
stuCCed in a plastic water bottle.
The bottle washed up on the
shoreline in the beac-li community
of ncs1daxa.
Scott, '57, had tossed several
bottles overboard in November
while on a cnuse through the
eastern Cal::ibbean, bopmg to get
a few mteresting letters.
But Bermudez's letter, which
was wntten in Spanish and told of
the hurricane's devdstation to his
home, touched Scott and prompt-
ed him to send the man a $50
money order by registered mail.

November 1998 marked the beginning of a new
era for a show that has long been a benchmark
for Southern California antique shows.
Michael and Marilyn Grimes. owners or
Calendar Antique Shows. finalized a purchase
agreement with South Coast Shows· to acquire the
long running Expo Antiques Show & Sale in Costa
Mesa.
Also known as the Costa Mesa Antique Show. the
expo was started more than 20 years ago by Dorothy
Emerson. long considered a pioneer in the business
of producing antique shows. Emerson is best known
for two shows which remain a staple of the show
circuit in Southern California: Santa Monica and
Costa Mesa Following Emerson. the show was
managed by Don Nolan. a promoter fo r many years
He retired from the production business five years
ago, at which point the show was purchased by
Harvey and Judy Liss of South Coast Shows
According to Michael Grimes. it was an opportunity
he could not possibly pass .up
"I don't thmk you could ever ask for a more perfect
match than what we have now-:-Del Mar and Costa
Mesa. Grimes said "I consider these shows to be the
Yin and Yang of the antique shows in Southern
California All you have to do is consider that both
shows have been running for many years and are
therefore extremely well established. Then. add to
that the.fact that both are well thought of by the
general public and the antique dealers. You've got a
win·win situation."
Grimes will be working the same magic for Costa
Mesa that he has done for Del Mar over the past few . years.
"The one thing I do that the dealers appreciate
more than anything else is bring in the people,"
Grimes said. "Without people in the building, a dealer
can't sell antiques. When you consider Costa Mesa's
location In Orange County and the population within
a I OO·mile radius. it's almost scary. This Is the show
with fantastic growth potential. and I think if there Is
any company in the marketplace who can tap that
potential, it would have to be Calendar Shows."

Mace believes that the letter possibJy comes
from John B. "Jack" Thayer, Jr., the son of a
wealthy Pennsylvania railroad owner and a
survivor of the disaster at the age of 17. Thayer
is one of the men who were able to firid safety
aboard the capsized Collapsi ble B after the ship
had gone down according t o reports which

include a 1940 pamphlet he wrote describing
the disaster. .
Jn a flier Mace wrote about the letter. she
said. "The Titanic was a mail ship, but all was
lost from the mail roorrr: So finding a letter that
was written on the Titanic is a rare find lndeed."
If the document is genuine. Mace believes it
could be quite valuable because of the antique
paper that it is written on. She said that
documents are becoming increasingly valuable
because there are not many of them around.
This she attributes to the composition of the
paper itself and how dissolvable it is.-
Mace first learned of the letter when taking
possession of her brother-in-law's (lames Lamb)
rare book collection after his death. According
to her. Lamb's family were acquaintances of the
Thayers In Penn sylvania. Mace received a ca ll
from one of Lamb's friends in December 1998
indicati ng that she had found a piece of "scrap"
paper in one of the volumes. Mace went to
investigate and found the document to be a letter
obscured by ink
bleed and a tear

According to the letter. the Titanic didn't
meet the writer's expectations. The writer
complained that the food was not that good
and that their clothing was not fitting well. but
comments on how exquisi te the chandeliers
were aboard the vessel. The letter is signed in a
scrawl which may read "Thayer," but is relatively
