He was on day five of a 40-day stretch at the spot and has been displaying his signs for 12 years. Why do you sit out here 1 There's a lot of reasons I'm here. I'm kind of putting the light of day on things. The focus is on how to believe, not what to believe. I'm not doing anything par- ents shouldn't be doing. There are five Acade· mies that are available to enter- ing Freshinen at Harbor High. These academies provide a way for students to better acquamt themselves wtth a group, since the school now has a population of 2,100 students. It was touted as a "school within a school" concept. Four of the Academies focus on a thematic approach to learn· ing, with all classes emphasizing a group of subjects. There are about 100 students in each one. Every Advanced Placement and Honors class is open to every student. whether or not they are in an academy. About 1/3 of the freshmen choose not to enroll in an academy. Next year, zero perlod will be available for Aca· Oemic Decathlon, Mock 1\ial, and Model United Nations, so that those will not conllict with academy classes. As I advanced around the room to hear each pitch, each one emphasized the need to have the student pick the academy they wanted to attend. The parents should not make the decision. Harbor High IS on a modified block schedule, so that on Mon· day students dttend all six of tbeLT classes. On Tuesday and Thursday they attend three classes for longer periods. On Wednesday and Friday they ~end the other three. Ideally, the academy classes are sched· uJed on either the A or B block day, so that field trips or other special activities can take place on the Academy Day. The oldest of the academies is the Da Vmei Academy. It focus- es on math and science and is in its fourth year. Each year these students will take classes that are not normally thought of as math and science·onented. The Shakespeare Academy is in its first year. Its focUs Is music, art and drama. Its biggest sell· ing point is that the student will be with people who have a pas· sion for the arts, including the teachers, and many of the asStgnments focus on that pas· sion In this academy, a student lS still required to take math and science. The Magellan Academy is in its third year, and focuses on social soence, liberal arts and international relations. Students in this academy take psychology and sociology. These are not AP classes, however, and do not replace those classes at the col· lege level. The Franklin Academy is in its first year with a focus on busi· • ·: IML1mtR. COllAMllA• .... , ... ness, computers and commu.n.ica· ti.on. Students take Web page • design, job shadow in the com· munity and <;reate a business with a product to sell, at least in theory. By using power point or video presentations, a student could do one project and get credit in English, history and computer class. Students had just completed a three·minute video, which they had edited. Field trips included trips to the Pacific Stock Exchange, Chiat Day Advertising Agency, and the Museum of Computer Science. After listening to all of the presentations, I wanted to attend every academy. Therein lies the possible problem. What do stu· dents do if they are interested in all of the areas emphasized by the four academies? By picking one area at such a young age, is the student precluding himself from finding other areas of inter· est? U I were in charge, I would have all freslunen and sopho· mores in college take a variety of classes before declaring a major, so the idea of committing to a field at such a young age bothers me. Obviously, the kids at Har· bor High love it, though. l also don't understand how they can take these courses and still fit in all of the courses necessary for UC requirements. • Thanks to the Newport·Mesa Schools Foundation, which announced the recipients of this year's grants. That is an invitation to disaster -you could end in an inferior no trump contract when you clearly belong in spades. There is no reason why part- ner cannot hold four spades as well as a heart suit. Rebid one spade. Q 3 -Neither vuJnerable, as South you hold: • K Q 9 o A K 10 l o J 10 3 • ! <6 2 What is your opening bid? A -If you play four-card majors. you have no problem. You have a fine four-card suit, so open one heart. If you play five-card majors, try not lo throw up in public. Again, you have only one opU<>n. Sinoc you do not have a five-card maior, the normal action is lo open with your cheaper three-card minor. Bid one club. Your diamonds are not so sig- nificantJy stronger 10 affect this choice. What actlon do you talc.e7 A -Once upon a time it wu auto- matic to double to show the equiv• lent or a no-trump opening bid. However, experience has shown that, when ()nc no trump doubled became the final contract, any lead you made was likely to cost a tempo, 1f not a trick:. Therefore. the modem tedden-cy is to double onJy on tllO$C hands' where you have a _good, long suit and attractive operung lead. Since this holding docs not qualify, pass and await developments. A -East's intervention has been a most welcome development. You have a hand with no ruffin~ value and a minimum opening btd. Now that you have been relieved of the burden of making a rebid, you can tell partner of this by passing. ANSWERS TO WEEKLY BRIDGE QUIZ Q 1 -Neither vulnerobl~. as South you hold: • •AK'3 <;i AJS o Altl065 •6 The bidding has orooecded: NORUI EAST' SOl1111 WEST ha Pllll I 0 Pus 10 Pus 1 What do you bid now? A -This is no time to wony about preserving space so that you can explore delicately -a rebid of one spade can be passed! Even opposite nothing but king.queen fifth of hearts and a doubleton diamond you have play for slam. Tell ~ the good news by starting with a jump shift of two spodes. Q 2 -Neither vulnerable. as South you hold: •J543 O K6 0 K9'3 •AJ7 The bidding has proceeded: soum WEST NOR111 EAST lo Pus 11:.1 Pus 1 What do you bid now? Q 4 •East-West vulnerable, aa South 'Y .. 00 hold: •AK87 o Q'7 O Kf5 •AJOU Your right-hand opponent opens the bidding with ·one no trump. What action do you take? • A -Once upon a lime it was auto- matic to double to show the equiva· lent of a n<Hrump opening bid. However, ex_perience ha,, shown that, when one no trump doubled became the final contract, any lead you made was likely to cost a tempo, 1f not a trick. Therefore, the modem tenden- cy Is to double only on iliole hands · where you have a~ long suit and attractive openmg lead. Sinc.c this holding does not qualify, pass and await developments. Q 5 · East-West vulnerable, as South you bold: • J 3 2 c;:,1 K 8 3 o 10 65 • A K Q 4 The bidding has oroceeded: SOtrrH WFSt NORTH EAST I• Pass IQ 20 ? A -Do not even think of bypassing your shabby four-card spade suit in favor of bidding one no trump. lllat is an invitation to disaster -you could end in an inferior no trump contract when you clearly belon,g in spades. There 1s no reason why part- ner cannot bold foor spades as well as a heart suit. Rebid one spade. • What actipn do you take? Q 3 -Neither vulnerable, as South you hold: • K Q 9 c;:,1 A K 10 2 o J 10 3 • 54 2 Whal is your opening bid? A -If you play four-card majors, you have no problem. You have a fine four-card suit, so open one heart. If you play five-card majors, lly not to throw up in public. Again, you have only one option. Since you do not have a five-card major. the normal action is to open with your cheaper three-card minor. Bid one club. Your diamonds are not so sig- nificantly stronger to affect thjs choice. A -East's intervention has been a mos! welcome development. You have a hand with no ruffin~ value and a minimum opening bad. Now that you have been relieved of the burden of making a rebid, you can tell panner of this by passing. Q 6 -As South, vulnerable. you hold: • J 10 8 7 4 3 c;:,l 10 3 2 0 8 7 • 76 The biddjng h~_proceeded: NOR111 EAST SOlTfB WF.Sf l o Dbl ? What 11etion do you take? A • You have nothing, so pass. At the table, South elected to make a weak jump shift to two spades. Tiwlt cost 1,400 ~ints, only because the trumps splat 3-3.
