The Costa Mesa Business Acad- emy, a school-funded program which began three years ago to provide students with bu~~ess skills, will become a California Partnership Academy and receive state funding. · By becoming a Partnership Academy, the program will receive $42,000 in funding this year, $72,000 next school year and $81,000 the following yeat. The California grant requires matching funds from the district and local businesses. The Newport-Mesa Unified School District has already commit- ted matching funds and Orange County Teachers Federal Credit • · Union and California Federal Bank are donating work hours by provid- ing volunteers. The three-year program for sophomores, juniors and seniors will also change its recruitment focus to at-risk students who attend school irregularly, are behind in credits, have low motivation and are economically disadvantaged.· Joan Kerins, a Costa Mesa busi- ness teacher and co-chair of the program, said that she can see changes in students' attitudes after they enroll in the Business Acade- my and so she is excited about its new focus. • SEE GRANT PAGE 4 dards, Bergeson said. I see that the Wedge regula.n a.re trying to keep body- boarders from putting on a contest at the Wedge. There slipped into the news account of that controversy an item that is not exactly correct. Mel • Thoman, speaking for the Wedge Preserv~tion Society, is quoted as saying that ~there has really never been a contest at the Wedge.• Not so. Once upon a time there was a bodysurfing contest at the Wedge. Not much of a bodysurfing contest it is true. No 1Vs, no cameras. Nev; ertbeless, it was a bodysurfing contest, and it was held at the Wedge. It ~appened in 1960 or there- abouts. I had ceased being a Wedge regular several years before when I moved from Balboa to Corona del Mar. Nevertheless, I still went to the Wedge on big days and still knew a few of the regulars. . In the meantime, Little Coro- na bad become my beach. At that time there were some pretty good bodysurfers a\ Little Coro- na. And so it was that one day, on behalf of the Little Corona bodysurfers, I challenged the . . robe rt gardner Wedge regulars to a contest. They agreed, we waited for a big day, and when it arrived, I brought my Little Corona body- surfers to the Wedge for a con- test. · As it twned out, it wasn't all that much of a contest. We had four preliminary heats. The first heat was won by Jim Scanlon, Wedge regular. The second heat was won by Don Reddington, Wedge regu- lar. The third heat was won by Chip Fitzwa.te r, Wedge regular. The fourth heat was won, yippee, by Nancy Gardr1er, Lit- Ue Corona (Nancy had become a much better bodysurfer than her father ever was). Then the wind came up, and we never had the finals, which was probably just as well because those Wedge regulars were just about the best body- surfers l have ever .seen, exclud-- ing Buffalo Keaulana. There will never be anoth4µ:,Buffalo, a great brown seal 41.the water. Buffalo revolutionized modem bodysurfing·when be dropped his outside arm below the body to act as a hydrofoil. Buffalo is in -a class by filfuself. ' But back to the Wedge regu- lars. An example of the ability of those Wedge regulars occurred a few years later when the Newport Beach Bodysurfing Club put on a bodysurfing con- test. Bodysurlers came from as far away as Santa Cruz to the north and San Diego to the south -all to no avail. The Wedge regulars took all the pre- liminary heats, then won first, second, third and fourth in both the senior and junior finals. That was the only contest the New- port group put on which was just as well. No one would have entered another. By Richard Dunn, Dally Pilot ~ COSTA. MESA -Whep the Doug Dea~ reign started four years ago at Costa Mesa High, optimism 1within the school's once- floundering baseball program was suddenly raised. So, according to Deats, there's no reason to chaJlge that mood in 1997, even though some believ~ the Mustangs reached their peak a season ago with Jeremy Starns, Matt Broesamle and Mike Adelmund, three of Mesa's pillars of strength who led the pro- gram to back-to-back playoff appearances for only the second time in school history. Deats, who turned the program around in 1994, his first season, with a surplus of fun- damentals,· enthusiasm and new defensive schemes, is optimistic about his ~97 squad, even without the aforementioned trio of All- Pacific Coast League performers. But are the Mustangs good enough to merit a spot in the CIF Southern Section Playoffs for an unprecedented third year in a row? •1t could happen,• Deats said of a three- peat. •The guys th1nk I'm crazy, because of unproven pitching, unproven players, sopho- mores in the lineup, and maybe even a fresh- man (Josh Little). But, gosh, if you can't be optimistic this time of year, you should prob- ably be out of (the coaching business).• Of the three returning starters who are seniors, much will be asked of them, begin- ning with leadership. Catcher Julius Vasquez, a third-year starter, second baseman Layne DeTemple and pitcher/third baseman Al Lambert are the racks on which the Mustangs will hang their hats. "I feel kind of bad for this year's seniors," Deats said. •Those three saw an old era end. and now we're starting a new era. so they're in between. But those guys can put a stamp on what the new era's going to be." Costa Mesa, in Deats' second year, advanced to the post.season for the tint time since 1981, then last year the school made lt again, equalling the repeat feat of the 1961 and '62 teams. By graduating five regulars, including all three pitcben, the Mustangs will be thin on the mound. But Deats hu plenty ot speed. Jed by junior center fielder Ben Felter, and .. like Vasquez need to step up and break out of those guys' shadows,• Deats said. •vasquez bad a nice couple of years when he was able to ride on those guys' coattails. But this year be has to carry that coat, and Felter needs to put that jacket on a year early, and I think deep down we're going to hit.• Among the more interesting battles for Costa Mesa is shortstop, where junior Gon- salo Rodriguez and sophomore Robert Gloster are fighting for the starting Q.od from Deats. . Whoever doem't start at shortstop could contend with Jeremy Gordon in left field. Cordon, backup catcher Federico Ceja and right-handed pitcher Joe Jeffers are seniors with limited varsity experience. "We're kind of in a transition phase;• Dea.ts said. "I think we'll be a competitive team, and a year from now we'll be really strong, if everything works out the way I'm hoping it does. That's why it's important for these (six) seniors to put their stamp on it.• Mesa, 15-10 last year, will also rely this year on juniors Scott Smith and Ryan Gal- lacher, sophomore Brian Montoya and Little, . who will either pitch a lot on the varsity, or go down toN. - After Lambert, penci:ted m as the ace of the staff, it's Smith, Jeffers, DeTemple and Little on the mound, not necessarily iQ that order. Smith can also play third, second or the outfield, while Gallacher will probably sta.tt at first base. Gallacher is also Vasquez's backup behind the dish. "(Gallacher) will probably be our ~g catcher next year." Deats said. •He has a decent bat, so we need him in the lineup." Montoya, called up for Mesa's postsea.son last year, a 1-0 setback against Santa ~ar garita, is the starting 9ght fielder. "We're going to be so bloody inconsistent, that's our problem," Deats said. "We virtual· ly have no innings coming back on ·the mound, and th.at'• pretty important. That's 80% ol the game or more, and we've got DOile ol it coming b6ck. So that's a big ques-tion mart.. .
