Blackies, a virtual institution with loyal customers, arranged in October to transfer a full-service state liquor license from the now- defunct Empire Ballroom night-• - -club in Costa Mesa.~ But the McFadden Square bar needs approval from the state Depart- ment of Alcoholic Beverage Con- trol -and be.fore that, the dty- to complete the transfer. Bob Neely • T here's a breath of fresh air in college athletics. So pure and crisp when inhaled, the breath makes us forget the gambling incidents, the violence, the suspensions, the agents. The breath is the NationaJ Association of Intercollegiate A'.thletics -the NAIA . Last week Southern California College men's basket- ball team, which competes in the Golden State Athletic Conference of the NAIA, filled our lungs. . In "a gut-wrenching 68-58 loss to Westmont in the first roµnd of the GSAC playoffs, the Vanguards played with an emotion that made the small, boisterous crowd at The Pit proud and provided a different way of looking at college a thletics. ~ Not even 500 people attended the game. No tailgate parties, no ~Big Dance• paraphernalia, no big bucks-court-side seats. (No pressbox, either.) What you see is what you get in the NAIA -shoebox gymnasi- ums and no parking. You also see talented athletes, young men and women who play hard. practice hard and who have lives' off of their respective playing fields. These athletes go to class. They go to the beach. They go to church. They are in clubs. The NAIA and its schools have given them the opportunity to play competitively and live fully. With 350 fully-accredited four-year schools, the NAIA does not reap the financial benefits of large NCAA Division I programs, nor does it receive television airtime, or half the respect it deserves. Justin Mcintee, the Vanguards' top scorer in the playoff game, attended two schools before settling on sec. He said he focuses more on school and friendships than basketball now, but that didn't stop him from scoring 41 points in his finaJ two games. sec hosts a full slate of col- lege athle tics for men and women. The programs are com- petitive, exciting and, above all, refreshing. Q Whitney Houston o n splkesl The diva can sing, but it's doubtful she can swing. Ho wever, SCC's sophomore shortstop Dawn Davidson can belt out the tunes as Vil as the hits. Davidson, a natl~ of Tustin, performed the Star Spangled Banner before the start of SCC's men's basketball playoff game last Wednesday and, like the sound of a softball smacking into a leather glove, it was nothing short of beautiful. Q The Vanguard softball team under first-year head coach Beth Renkoski is off to its worst start in club history. With a 3-17-1 record, the former powerhouse has dropped 10 consecutive games. sec dominated the GSAC from 1993-95 earning three copf erence banners, two Far West Regional titles and the ' NAIA's third rank in 1995. Names like Beth Howard, Angie• Vega and Jen Caruso were splashed all over the all-conference list with a host · ' of other Vanguards. 1<i Despite the dismal pre-season'' record, look for sec to pull out of the GSAC fairly well. • SEE COLLEGES PAGE a: ... -.... -..... _____ ... ___ ····· , -. . . . .. -. . # r# • -., • . .. .. . ~ .. t Ne1Vport ~ach/Costa Mesa Daily Pilot I ...
