BRIEFLY Sea Kings sharp at Orange County Champion.Ships IN~%TN VOLLEYBALL BEACH -Corona del Mar High's upstart Sea Kings are fast becom-· ing a'team to be reckoned with as Sea View League boys volleyball approaches (April 8) following their semifinals appearance at the Orange County Champi- onships Saturday at Marina High. The Sea Kings bumped off Irvine in the quarterfinals, 16-14, 15-11 before falling to eventual champiofi Huntington Beach, 15- 10, 15-4. Newport Harbor plugged to a quarterfinal appearance where the 3-7 Sailors fell 15-9, 15-8 to a tough Esperanza team, which advanced to the finals before falling to Huntingt,pn Beach, 15- 13, 15-12. Coach Dan G lenn's team wrapped up pool play with a three-set loss to Esperanza Satur- day morning, then pulled off a 15-13, 15-6 victory over San Clemente before the quarterfinal. Glenn praised the efforts of junior setter Travis Nelson, and said he was pleased with lus squad's overall performance. , Corona tlel Mar third P A L M SPRINGS TENNIS Corona del Mar High's boys ten- nis team boasted two perfect doubles pairs, a perfect singles performer and won 25 of 30 sets played. . So why is Coach Tun Mang upset that his Sea Kings came in third place at the Palm Springs Tournament? Here's why: After shutting out Cypress and Warren, and taking five of six sets from Canyon Springs, the Sea Kings won four of six sets from Santa Margarita. · l The problem with that was the I score was kept by games, not I sets. Despite, the 4-2 set margin, : Santa Margarita won 36 games to 1 Corona's 34. I •That was th~ problem. Some-I thing else, huh?" Mang said. I After the "loss," the Sea Kings : breezed through Mission Viejo's Tanks for third place at the tour- nament. The scoring may have gotten Mang down, but his singles play- er John Cappello lifted his spirits with a perfect afternoon. Cappel- lo notched an 8-1 over Canyon Springs, an 8-7 win over Warren, an 8-6 victory against Santa Mar- garita and teamed with two other Sea Kings fbr 8-3 and 8-4 doubles wins. The pairs of Sameen Chopra and Greg Coleman, and Drew Fuller and Jensen also did not fall in the tournament. -By Molly Yanity USC football greats to visit Pelican Hill GC Former NFL great GOLF NOTES Ronnie Lott, along with Trojan Football Fax, will host their first celebrity golf invitational June 13 at Pelican Hill Golf Club in a scramble format with a noon shotgun on the Ocean Course. • r-----------------------------------------~--------------------------------~--~---------------, I '\ . . ..... : " rugby .. DAILY PILOT PHOTOS _ BY STARR CARRQLL I • ·Rugby ori.Iy appears to be R-rated By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -From the sidelines, rugby seems more like an R-rated movie than a sport. Vio- lence, adult language, gore. You probably wouldn't want your children to see it. · · But, there over behind the rope are a couple kids, watching their dad take part in the production. And there are a few women who, like the children, ·can't take their eyes off of the action. As unprotected bodies slam into each other, cleat- ed shoes crush down on flesh, and fingernails rip across skin, the game of rugby goes on. As men curse and yell, the game continues -and within that game is an unspoken respect and admiration of its com- petitors as gentlemen. Gentlemen? . The Back Bay Rugby Club of Newport Beach bat- tled in its last home game. Saturday afternoon at Peninsula Park, falling to Tempe 19-17. When the team members walked off the field after Tempe kicked a last-minute penalty boot through the uprights for the win, blood was streaming down the face of one athlete. Another immediately wrapped his knee with ice. A few cuss words were slung around holding the disappointed tone of defeat. Back Bay's 'lravis Grant just fell to the ground and closed his eyes. Grant, a former star for the Corona del Mar High soccer team, has been playing rugby for three years and will vouch that rugby players are simply tough gentlemen. \: "In soccer, you take a ch·eap shot every chance you get," he said. "But you don't here. You don't see guys stepping on each other's neck. There are so many chance$..to"'throw a punch right or left. You just don't do it.• J The 22-year:-old Grant got into rugby three years ago while attending Claremont-McKenna College and said that you'd be kicked off of a team for 'play- ing dirty. "Everything I got at yelled at for in soccer I get cheered for in rugby," he said. Grant's Back Bay team, sponsored in part by RolliDg Rock and Labatt's beers, is a 55-man club broken into •A• and "B • teams. Three years ago, the organization was a 25-man club. Shelling out money from their own pockets, the athletes begin their sea- son in October, traveling to Las Vegas, Arizona and Southern California. League play begins in January and runs through April. In three weeks, some of Back Bay's members will embark on a rugby excursion to Wales and Ireland. · Grant, who has taken the world tour the past three years, will skip this trip. He'll just get his cultural fix from his teammates, which include natives of France, Australia and Ireland, as well as Americans. The international group could not fend off the squad from Tempe. The Back Bay club jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in the contest when Greg Mulholland . plowed for a 20-yard rush befote pitching to Rusty Weis who struggled in for a gpal. Neil Whitfield drilled the two-point conversion kick. Tempe took a 9-7 advantage to halftime. Weis and Whitfield put together seven more points to creep up on T~~·s lead at 14-16 with time winding down. Whitfield booted a 35-yard 'penalty kick to lift Back Bay to a 17-16 lead. In the final minute, Tempe took advantage of a Back Bay penalty with a successful kick for the 19-17 final. "It takes so much mental discipline to keep it together with so much going on,• Grant said. With penalties called for going over the top of a maul -crossing the line of the ball to your oppo- nents' side in a cluster of players, or not wrapping your arms around the opponent when you tack.le - you can't just bit the opposition, mental toughness seems to be just as important as raw strength and quickness. •There's hardly ever trash talk," Grant said. "U you hear someone trash talking, it's a good sign, because he's probably not someone who will be able to keep it together.• t Entry fee is $500 per person, which includes continental breakfast, lunch, golf, cocktail reception, awards dinner with celebrities, contests, prizes and giveaways.
