Sunday was a feel-good day for
mothers everywhere, especially
in Newport-Mesa
beach.
But Mother's Day wouldn't be complete without the
annual tradition of taking mom to a scrumpbous b11o1nch.
Around both towns, restaurants were brimnuog with ac:ttv-
ity as families spent quality time with their mothers.
"Our mom does so much for us,· said 11 .year·old
Michelle Turner. who tried to get in a word over her
younger, excitable sister, Allison. The Turners were spend-
irig their day in Newport Beach, eating at the Tu.le of the
Whale before beading back to Los Angeles. where they
planned to ride their bikes.

W hether it was ,a tender hug or a bouquet of blos-
soming flowe rs, sons and daughters alike showed
their appreciation for their mothers on Sunday.
The day entirely devoted to the people who-brought us
into this world was spent by some in Newport-Mesa
attending chwch, playing in the park or walking on the
·she helps us out with our homework and' packs these
amazing lunches for school. The least we could do 1s take
her to brunch. But our dad is picking up the bill.•
The girls also gave their mother a porcelain figurine of
two pandas wrapped in each other's embrace. They knew

vice stations.
· The changes are needed to bnng up to date
an array of Jaws that have not been substan·
llally revised since, the city first adopted them
m 1972, oty ofhcials said.

In-the early 1970s, industry represen~tives
note, gas stabons primarily relied on mechan·
ic services to supplement their gas sales. But
with tec;.hnoloqical_mcreases in auto design,
cars now break down less frequently and
acluatly cost more for the serYJce stauon to
repair. An increase in leased cars -partlcu-
larly in the Newport Beach area -has also
caused mechanic services to dip, smce many
of those leases provide for repairs dl.fectly at
the dealership
With an accompanymg slide m the profits
'from ga~ sales, gas stauons have looked to
other semces, like convenience marts and car
washes, to keep Uiemseives rn,the black. ofll-
cials said. Some have even developed
•hybrid• facilities that combine two or more
different types of franctuses, such as operating
a McDonald's fast.food restaurant ms1de a
Chevron station.

how to address potential day
laborer problems when .the· new
store opens at Harbor Center.
A draft Day Laborer Action
Plan has been prepared in antia-
pation of the store's opening,
scheduled for late this year or
early next year.
Costa Mesa already has a city-
run job cen ter for day laborers on
Placentia Avenue. However,
some changes would have to be
made to the job center to accom-
modate ·additional day laborers
and to make sure everyone uses
.the center rather than loiter in
front of the store.
Some of the proposals include
··Increased hours of operation
• Additional police support.
• Charging workers a monthly
fee.
• Requiring workers to help
direct contractors and other day
laborers to the center,
• Moving the current location
closer to Home Depot at Harbor
Boulevard and Wilson Street.
It costs the city between
$80,000 and $100,000 to operate
the job center Monday thro,Y9h
Saturday from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.
1ncreasing the hours of operation
from 6 a .m . to 2 p .m ., seven days
a week, would cost another
$42,000, according to a staff
report.
According to the Home Depot
action plan, police would be
asked to arrest or ticket day
laborers who do not use the cen·
ter. Day laborers who use the
center would also be asked to
monitor noncomplying day labor-
ers and take down license plate
numbers of employers who use
noncomplying day laborers so
that warrung letters can. be sent
to them.
Police Cluef Dave Snowden
expressed some concerns in a
review of the draft plan.
"The Police Department
should not be used to intimidate
(neither) day laborers nor their
potential employers into using
the job center if they are-not vio-
lating any state la\f' or local ordi-
nance,• Snowden said.
The city ordinance· regarding
labor solicitation only applies to
public property. The Police
Department can enforce private
property trespass law violations if
requested by the property own·
ers.
Home Depot favors using job
centers to address day laborer·
issues. Spokeswoman Amy
Friend praised other job centers
that offer English as a Second
Language and computer classes
to day laborers while they wait to
be employed.
Home Depot does not have a
companJ policy requiring
employees to call police if day
laborers are loitering outside,
Friend said.
The company deals with loi-•
tering on a case-by-case basis by
evaluating custom er complaints,
she said.

a hobby.

adventure. I have spent a lot of
rughts at school board meetings,
and I have talked to a bunch of
people throughout tbe district
that are concerned about the
. education of our child.red.
I have spent a lot of sleepless
nights worrying about thf! effect
my column might have on the .
kids. Since my column needed to
be in on Thursday mornings (or
the Monday morning edition, I
had plenty of nights to worry.
This column has afforded me
a perfect opportunity to ask my
children and their friends about
the issues I have written about. I
am sure we have communicated
more about school and district
issues than any other family.
I can't believe the siuality of
canng and commitment of the
teachers and staff that I have

While I could wax poetic for
the rest of my column, I am
· always over my word allotment,
so I must get to the pragmatic
matters that face our district. ·
Hopefully, the Pilot \\rill
replace me with someone who
has the answers. I'm best at fig-
uring out ~e questions:

1. Why is it that inequities are
only· apparent t our school ii we
don't have something some otlier
school has?
Have you ever heard a parent
say that their school had a sci-
ence lab that no other school
had, so they shoUld get rid of it?
Has a student ever said that his
home life is so much better than
that of rus schoolmate that he
wants to give away his books
and computer, in order to equal-
ize the situation? I am as guilty
as t!e next. Maybe we need to
step back ahd think about all the
special things our school sites
have, instead of just focusing on
what is missing. '
2. Pa.rt of the NeW}>9rt-Harbor
zone rec:onfigurati0l'r"plan is to .
renovate Monte Vista School in
2000 for use as an elementary
school. It is projected to cost $4.3
million, which is about $1.1 mil·
lion less than the renovation of
Eastbluff School.
Why is it that much less, and
where is any of the money com-
ing from? If there is no money,
why are we bwlding a reconfigu-
ration plan around it?
3. Using Monte Vista for an.
elementary school means that
the programs currently housed
.
there, Monte Vista and Back Bay
Continuation School, will have to
move. It is projected to cost
$362,000 from the general fund
to make the move.
The talk is that it will be
ho~ m a .storefront. What is
being cut out of the general fund
to pay for the move? What is
being cut out of the general fund
every year to pay the rent on the
storefront? Is the storefront the
best enVlionment for these stu-
dents?
4. Newport Harbor High
School is about twice as big as
the other three high schools, in
terms of ninth to 12tli grade. Its
graduating class is almost hall
the size of its incoming ninth·
grade class.
How long before there is a 1 moratorium on transfers to Har-
bor High? In the alternative, will
classes soon be held in tents?
5. The state has two kinder-
garten options. Right now, the
distnct has its a.m. and p.m.
. teachers working with both
classes, so the state pays us
about $400 per student, witn no
increased costs. Next year, the
district is going to the other
option, which is to have one
teacher for every 20 students.

The state will then fund about
$800 per student. which lS about
$380,000 short of what the labor
costs Will ~-In the following
:years. it is expected that that
amount will grow The clisbict
has determined to use other
(Uhds to pay for the capit.41 costs
for facilities needs for full-day
kindergarten.
But no one has said where the
$380,000 is coming from. What
programs will be,cut. or what
upper-grade classes Will helve
increased numbers to absorb this
cost?
: 6. All-day kindeigcUten Will be
detennined on a duss-by-class
basis, as the year progresses.
However, only two zones Will
have the facilities to offer that
option. For my money, I would
offer all-day kindergdrten to
those children that needed to
learn English, that hadn't been to
preschool, and that weren't read
to at home.

Eleven students from NeWJ>orl
Harbor High School who took the
1998 PSAT/NMSQT last October
scored at least 197, which placed
· them among the 50,000 highest
scores m the. year 2000 National
Merit Scholarship Program. .
The students are: Alex Arjad,
Sidd Bik,J<annavar, Nicole Dore,
Janue Dow, Elizabeth Jansma,
Shannon Keehan, Max Lansing,
Kelsey Peterson, Courtney Rot-
stan, Patrick Sharma, and Cari
Valenstein.
The students in the Merit Pro-
gram have shown outstanding
acadenuc potential and will be

sities m the United States by the
program. Of the 50,000 students,
approximately 16,000 will be
named semifinalists and will have
the opportunity to compete for

acknowledge individual honors, but the spirit of
competition flourished at the inaugural. •Nike-
Town M!yor's Sports Challenge• event Friday at
Newport Harbor High School. •
Some 75 area middle school youngsters partic-
ipated in the four-hour meet hosted by nine-time
Olympic gold medalist Carl LewiS.
The schools represented were Mariners, Rea,
TeWinkle, Davis and Newport Heights middle
schools.
It was the Mayor's Sports Challenge, but Cos·
ta Mesa Mayor Gary Monahan missed out
because of other commitments.
The day's festivities included a variety of run-
rung ev~ts and a question and answer session
with Lewis, who ,has spent the last several years
spreading his message to the youth of America.

hoops for two years in the
Golden State Athletic
Conference.
After a year off, Mcintee
returned to the hardwood and
played his final two seasons at
Southern California College,
including the final campaign for
longtime SCC Coach Bill
Reynolds.
Mcintee, who averaged 17
points per game for the
Vanguards both years, his seruor
year under Coach Cameron
Dollar, garnered All-GSAC
recognition in his last season
(1997-98).
A small forw~d who could
post up or shoot from the
perimeter, Mcintee enjoyed one
of bis many collegiate highlights
as a jl,lllior when be helped sec
defeat his old school, B1ola, with
a game-winning buzzer-beater.

my first time back (in Biola's)
gym.• said Mcintee, whose
fade-away jumper from about
18 feet snapped Biola's 20-game
winning streak and upset the
nation's third-ranked NAlA
team.
Mcintee ea.med his degree in
business adnunistration last year
at sec and i.s now selling
commercial lighting and fixtures .
But Mcintee, who ~ves in
1S proud of his 43-point
basketball performanCQ ag~
Hanford at fhe Coast Classic in
1991.
"Nobody's broken that record
yet,• Mcinteesaid. "It's even
ahead of (LA Banrung's) Jaban
Anderson, who's in the NBA now
and scored 42 points m a game
once in that tournament (in. '90). •
Mcintee, a three-year varsity
starter in hoops, was a fitst-team
All-Sea View League selection 1n
1991 and '92, averaging 24 ppg
as a senior.
Also a two-time first-team1
all-league'volleyball player,
Mcintee was voted the ~
View's co-Player of the Year •
(with team.mate and setter
Russell Gan) as a seruor middle
blocker, when Glenn's Sailors
were ranked No 1 m Orange
County and reached the CIF 4-A
semifinals (OiVision I by tod~
standards}, losing to eventual
champion Santa Barbara.
In Mcintee's Junior year in
1991, Newport Harbor advallQBd
to the CIF 4-A championship
match, losing to San Marcos at
Cemtos College.
Mcintee was converted to an
outside bitter at Long Beach
State, but lus volleyball stint
there was short-bved and, the
following year, it was bock to
hoops. ·

much, it's a shame I had to
constantly choose between
