of Commerce's annual spring fashion

Mesa Unified School District consider requiring
uniforms for students In kindergarten through
eighth grade
Did you wear a unifonn to school
when you were young1 •
In the United States, no. But I also
lived overseas in thr~e coW\tries
(Venezuela, Chile and Liberia) where
the entire country's schoolchildren wore
uniforms, both in the private and public
schools. Jn fact, they were all the same
color (navy blue in Chile and Venezuela,
white/black in Libena). The variation
occurred in the number of pleats 'bl the
girls' skirts and whether the blazer had
lapels or not, the color of the shoes and
. socks.
Do you have a design in mind for the
unifonns, if the board lr11plements the

washable and long-weanng, with some

Tip leads police
to stolen vehicles
Police recovered three stolen
cars and arrested two people Sat ..
urday after a tip led them to the
parking lot of the Wyndham Gar-
dens Hotel in Cost.a Mesa.
Around 4 p.m. SatUrday, police
were called to the parking lot off
Avenue of the Arts after a hotel
patron reported that two cars
looked ta.Jppered with.
Police arrived at the scene and
con.finned that the two cars, both
Hondas, were indeed stolen. As
they were investigatibg the cars,
another stolen Honda with one
driver and one passenger pulled
up to the scene.
Police arrested two suspects,
Jovan McCay, and a juvenile girl,
whose name was not be released.

The man, whose name was not
released, was taken to Western
Medical Center in Santa Ana, and
is expected to survive his injuries.

accelerator instead of the brake

Friday night and Saturday morn-
ing involving planes, boats and
helicopters, coast guard officials
said.
Both men are fine, although
one suffered mild hypothermia
The two were part of a group of
13 j.et skiers who left Newport
Beach Fnday afternoon bound for
a jazi festival in Avalon on Catali-
na Island.

around 11 p.m. Friday. He report-
ed that he'd been with a friend,
Ovid A. Rijfkogel, who was still

used planes, boats and heli-
copters to search for tl)e man. A
Marine Corps helicopter located
Rijfkogel Saturday morning about
35 miles the coast of La Jolla.

Charismatic. the long-shot
three-year-old owned by Bob and
Beverly Lewis of Newport Beach.
won the Preakness Stakes, a 1
3/16th mile race held each year at
Pimlico in Baltimore.
On May 1, Charismatic sur-
pnsed everyone by winning the
Kentucky Derby. With his win Sat-
wday, he has a shot at the Thple
Crown. the grand slam of horse
racing. The final race of the crown
is Belmont Stakes in New York on
June 5. The last horse to Win the
Tuple Crown was Affirmed in
1978. .
The Lewises came dose two
years ago, however. when their
horse Silver Charm won both the
Derby and the Preakness.
If Charismatic trlwnpbs in New
York. it will bring the Lewises a $5
million bonus, in addition to the
approximately $1 million purse in
each of the three races. And all this
for a horse that could have been
bought for $62,000 just a few short
months ago. .
The Lewises could not be
reached Sunday, but at the stables
at the Orange County Fair in Costa
Mesa •horse people,• as they call
themselves, were clearly swayed
by Charismatic's charisma.
•1 wish I'd been smart enough
to buy him,• said Don. who would-
n't give his last name. •That is, il I
had $62,000."
•1 think he's wonderful," said
Mary Johnston. ·we were so hap-
py."
But one person demurred. Clau-
dia Berglund, who boards her hors-
es at the stables. jwnped up and
ran to get a picture when the sub-
ject of Charismatic came up. It was
a photograph of her horse, Prodigal
Son, a son of Affinned. the last
horse to win the niple Crown.
•1 don't really want another
horse to do it,• she said.
But she conceded that no one
agreed with her. •Everybody but
me wants him to win.• she said .
Avon products forced his way into
their home, police said.
At about 10:40 a.m., the couple
opened their door when a man
dressed all in black knocked and
asked them to buy Avon products,
according to police.
He forced his way into their El
Camino Dnve home, brandishing
a single-edge knife. He made
them lie down on the floor, then
went into their bed.room and stole
a wallet with $50 in il
He fled and is still at large.
The husband, 80, was treated
for a cut on his finger and a bruise
on his hand. The wife, 81, was not
injured, police said.
Police said the robber, who
appears to be in his early 30s, is
well spoken and articulate. They
describe him as black, 6-feet-4-
inches tall, bald and dressed all in
black. Anyone with information is
asked to call the Costa Mesa

Frustrating changes · won't remake Estancia schools
A re you ready to start
planning next year's
vacation? The School
Board has adopted the school
calendar for 1999-2000. Classes
start Sept. 9 and end June 20,
2000. I figure that board mem-
bers wanted to make the gradua-
tion announcements look good.
Winter break is from Dec. 18
to Jan. 3. Spring break runs April
15 through April 23 There are a
. couple of conference days and
preparation days but the eight
teacher in-service days of three
years ago are nusS1.0g.
The school board also voted
Tuesday to hire a company to•
conduct a phone survey m the
next two months to determine
the public's perception of the
condition and neens of the dis-
trict's facilities. The plan is to call
about 600 people. The results
will be presented along with the
findings of the architectural firm,
which will teU us what the firm
sees as each school site's needs
and how much the work would
cost.
Why not teU us what the
needs are and how much it will
cost before you take the survey?

some school sites are, and still
won't pay for it, then we're in
trouble. Right now, community
members might not know what it
is like to spend your day hoping
the ceiling b.le won't fall on your
head, or that the black goo leak-
ing from the air conditioner won't
get on your skin.
They may not realize that you

out a room to put it in.

dent motivation will go to rack
and ruin if there is more than one
valedictorian .. That took about

board decided on its first reading

trict will honor the top 2% of the
graduating class. I have trouble
perceiving the harm in Jetting

limelight.
My bi~gest frustration of the
rught was the reconfiguration of
the Estancia Zone. No zone has
more of a mishmash of grade lev-
els and boundary lines. No zone
has as many portables. It is my
belief that the Estancia Zone has
always received the Band-aid
approach to facilities corisidera-
tions, so the situation gets more
convoluted with every change.

vinced that the school will not
hold the projected population of
a seventh-through 12th-grade
school in two more years.

for Estanoa should go up every
year, 1t goes down.

Where do you have the best
chance of playing a varsity sport?
Which one has the best average
of SAT scores? Which one has
the cleanest campus in the best
repair? Which school has plenty
of playmg fields and a park next
door? Which has a dynanute dra-
ma department? The answer for
all: Estancia High.
The district's answer to low
enrollment at Estancia High is to
establish a "teaching academy,"
which will allow students to get a
teaching credential by complet-
ing two years in the "academy,"
two years at OCC,' and two years
at a four-year college. ,
It's a great idea, but I'm not
sure how many eighth-graders
about to go mto high school want
to be teachers No one swveyed
the students. My two daughters
could only think of one friend
that had expressed an interest in
ln my opinion, the question
isn't whether the schools need
fixing, it's whether the voting .
public has enough fe.ith in our
school board and admirustration
to vote to give them the money,
knowing the money will be used
to fix all the schools.

as the 6-foot-3 shortstop with a
cannon right arm who changed
positions one year in the rrunor
leagues and earned a bcket to
the big leagues as a pitcher that
same year.
"That was speoal, ~ Keough
says of.the 1977 campaign under
controversial yet colorful /l\s
owner Charlie 0 . Finley. "I was
told that year to go back to (AA)
Chattanooga, so I told Charlie
Finley that l was either going to
go back to AA as a pitcher or I
was going to go back to school
and get my law degree.•
But Keough will also be
remembered as the player whose
career ended abruptly while
sitting in the dugout during a
spring training game in Arizona
with the Angels. A foul ball
rocketed off his head in 1992 .
and Keough, who was
attempting another comeback,
never pitched again.
Whitey Henog, then the
Angels' front office executive,
hired Keough as his speoal
assistant that year and the
right-bander was on his way to
a second career.
And Keough will also be
remembered for tying a
73-year-old major league record
in 1979, when he lost his first 14
sUu1S of the year for the
talent-stripped A's, finishing
2-17.
Now an advance ma1or league
scout for the Angels, Keough
pitched nine yeers m the ma1ors
with five teams, mostly with the
!Jl1. His tremendous athletic
ability and stamina allowed him
to complete S3 games in bis
