The younger Hancock,
who last week won the CIF-
Southem Section Division m title
in the 1,600-meter run, has

For 35 years, Ferd was an assistant for Frank Willard, the
originator of "Moon Mullins,• and took over the strip after
Willard's death in the mid-19505. He teamed up with his son
1'om in 1956, when Tom was Just out of the Army and attend-
ing the Art Center in Los Angeles.

Group's $5 millio!l lawsuit alleges e-mails
hurt·business and defamed its activities

COSTA MESA-The Piece-
makm, an anti-government
religious group that some have
characterized as a cult, have
filed a S5 million lawsuit against
the son of one of the group's
members, claiming he is out to
destroy them.
Tom Halliburton, son of 20-
year Plecemakers member Don-
na Hall~urton, said he just
wants to expose the group for
what it ls. •
After his mother declined an
invitation to his college gradua-
tion last year, an upset Hallibur-
ton sent e-mails to vendors who
deal Wlth the Plecemakers. The
Piecemakers run a country store
on Adams Avenue.
Halliburton said he sent e-
mails to 30 stores Wlth links to
the Piecemakers' Web page,
which has since been disman-
tled.
In lus e-mail, Halliburton said
he wanted to infonn vendors
about the activities of the Plece-
makers group, which he
described as a "de tructive
. cult.• l:le urged vendors to read
Ronald M. Enroth's book,
"Churches that Abuse,• wh1ch
devotes six pages to the Piece-
makers.
In the bo6k, Enroth wrote that
members have been known to
surrender wedding nngs and

At present, there is no execu-
tive director to run the center.
On May 11 , the Tuesday
afternoon bingo players were

ed changes in order to receive·
pies and cakes for bingo pnzes

Some time ago, having
scraped the bottom of the·
barrel for a subject for this
column, I penned a bit of (ieath-
. less fluff about moving to Green
River, Wyo .. at the ripe old age
of 6 and, upon discovering that a
current train robber was named
Dave Gardner, immediately
adopting him as my uncle
In spite of my parents' denial
of any relationship, I continued
to brag about my MUncle Dave"
at the top of my shrill little voice.
My fellow urchins were
impress~d. I had instant stature.
Had I known then what 1 know
now, I would have been scream-
ing ~ an even louder voice that
my aunt and uncle were part-
ners with a member of the Wild
Bunch.
That really would have
assured my stature among ~y
peers. After all, the Wild Bunch
was 1much bf tter known than
Uncle Dave.
The Wild Burich was a loose-
ly knit aggregation of cattle
rustlers, horse thieves, train rob-
bers and bank robbers operating
in the Far West during the last
decade of the 1800s.
They were led by Butch Cas-
. sidy and the Sundance Kid, each
immortalized in a highly sue-·
cessful movie bearing their
names.
One of the high points of that
movie was a trairt robbery which
actually took place in August of
1890 at the town of Tipton,
which was located about ·
hallway between Green River
and Rawlins, Wyo.
As the gang fled from the rob-
bery, one of the group, Tom
Welch, was wounded. Although
most of the gang members were
eventually · either killed or
imprisoned, Tom Welch was
never apprehended.
At the time of the Tipton rob-
bery, m'y aunt and uncle, Char-
lotte and Jake Hawk, were the ·
doctors in Green River.
Uncle Jake clidn't take the
wactice of. medicine too serious-
ly. Actually, he spent most of Jus
time huriting and fishing. And so

THE VERDICT

it was that d few days after the
Tipton robbery, a man rode mto
town leading a saddlE>d horse.
He asked for Uncle Jake who
was, typically, out of town hunt-
