ational vehicles, boats, and manu-

Segerstrom said.
Avco had announced its depar-
ture early this year and was soon fol-
lowed by Rockwell International
Corp., also at Plaza Tower. The
Offices of South Coast Plaza is work-
ing with Rockwell, which is leaving
prior to the e nd of its 10-year lease,
to find a replacement tenant for its
100,000-squaro-foot space.
Deutsche signed a 10-year lease
based on the location and the attrac-
tive amenities in the area, said Brian
McDonnell, vice-president of opera-
tions. .

Apprecidting your Dad, in good times and bad
M Y father and I always
bugged a.nd kissed one
another when we met.
It wasn't exactly what you'd
call macho, but I loved him
and he loved me, so why not?
Oh, I probably shrank from .
such public displays of affec-
tion in high school. Before
that, I hardly saw him, stashed,
as I was, behind the walls or
various boarding schools. It
wasn't bis fault. What my
father aid for a living required
him to be on the road for
months at a time, often a dif-
ferent town every rught.
I went into the first boarding
school when I was about 7 and
continued until I was a sopho-
more in high school. I should
not be griping about this,
because my boarding school
life was opulent compared to
the 12 years my father spent in
an orphanage.
When I was little, I always
wondered why I only saw one

grandfather.
"Where's your father?" I
asked a couple of times. "How
come he's n~ here?"
·1 don't know,• my pad
would say rather sadly.
I spent the most time at
Montezuma School for Boys,
up in the mountains between
Los Gatos and Sdnta Cruz. It
t
was a ranch school with a
beautiful campus filled with
redwood groves, apple
orchards, its own lake and a
dorm and other buildings built
to look like the pueblos of the
Southwest. It was also a nut
farm, but that's another column
or two.
The students were mostly
from wealthy Salvadoran fami-
lies, broken homes, or had
been shipped there by parents
who could not, or would not,
deal with them.
Although I spent eight yea.rs
in that place, I only have hall a
dozen clear memories One
was the school nwse teaching
me the facts of life.
Another was the night dur-
ing World War II when some
men in hats and overcoats
came and took Mr. Weilhardt
away in handcuffs. Seems he
was a Nazi spy relaying radio
messages, not just the strange,
30-something man who taught
math and German.
Far too vivid was a rugh~
whon I was feelinq cspeci~y
sorry for myself. 1 hated the
school and I hated the people
who had put me there -my
mother and father.
• 1 want to go to a normal
school with normal kids,• 1
sniveled. A dorm housefather,
Mr Maltby, who was watching
this wretched display of self-
pity put his hand on my shoul-
der and said: •
"Quit it you little--! At
least you have a father. Your
dad never even knew his
father, but he loves you very
much. Grow up and love him
back."
I lay awake most of the
night thinking about that. I'm
still trying to grow up, but I
think that well-deserved lec-
ture marked the moment 1
began seriously loving my
father.
We had good times and a
(ew not so good. In 1954,
when I was at UCLA but liv-
ing at home, the phone rang
about 3 a.m.
It was bis fnend, Burr Blau,
calling to say that dad had
been arrested for DUI. Burr
said he'd have him bdlled out
about 6 a .m. and not to worry
-and certainly, not to come
down to the station house.
Hey, my dad was in trouble,
. so I reassured my mother and
went anyway. Now, in those
days, a celebrity drunk driver
was big news. And when I
amved at the cop house, it was
swanning Wlth at least 20
. reporters tnd cameramen.
I plunged through the mass
of newsies and met Burr. He
said dad would be coming out
soon. Then he asked: •Do you
have any unpaid parking tick-
ets at UCLA?"
"Well, yeah, a couple
maybe,· I said. ·why?"
The desk sergeant
answered: "Because, young
Martin, you have warrants out
on eight unpaid parking tide-
ets, and you and yow dad are
gomg to change placesr•
And we did. As he was
bemg released. I wa booked
and led away to the slammer.
"Where are you going,
son?" he asked.
•Jail, dad,· I said. Bewil-
dered does not begin to
descnbe the look on·his face.
Of course, this twist became
the news story, with lead-ins
like. "Bandleader's kid bails
out dad. is busted himself.•
Then there was the tune
when a love of my life, Mimi
Cwruruns, ca.me to our house
for a Chnstmas Day open
house Muni gave my dad a
hug, flashed her great srrule at
hin1 and said:
·Gee, Mr. Martin. tlu.s ~ the
fi.rst time I've been here when
the lights were on.•
Dad laughed I think.

lrict and the city of Costa Mesa.

grant from the state designed to
give poor stu<!ents extra after-
school help.

The program will be offered at
Adams, College Park, Pomona,
Rea, Sonora, Whittier and Wilson
elementary schools, and TeWin-
kle Middle School. At least 450

be offered from the time school
ends until 6 p.m., free of charge.

She said the money would be
used for drama and fine arts pro-
grams, as well as intramural

DiSlrict officials had onginally
asked the state for more than
$500,000 so they could offer pro.-
grams at Newport Heights,
Davis and Victoria elementary
schools, but state officials deter-
mined that there were not
enough low-income students at
those schools to qualify.
. Though many schools already
have after-school progrdffis, the
new program will offer ·more
hours and more comprehensive
and educationally sound pro-
grams, said Tom Carr, who
works m the distnc;t's student

the grant.

ly principal· of Pomona School
but is stepping down to spend

serve as part-time coordinator.
Carr also said that, even with
the $391,000, school, city and
community officials will hcwe to
group together several different

cessful after-school experience.
The terms of the grant give the
schools $5_per day, per student,
which is not enough to pay for
qualified teachers and materials,

day at a store on Balboa

The blaze began just
before 6 a.m., when smoke

within minutes and gained
access through the front

car enthusiasts dress up in cos-
tumes and talk to museum visi-

The museum should be fin-
ished by fall of this year, but
Market Place customers will see
other changes sooner, Teller
said. A manufacturing outlet
center and produce market are
scheduled to be finished by late
summer or early fall.
The outlet center will be
housed in six portable buildings.
Possible tenants.include produc-
ers of mattresses, home decor
items, crystal and fine leather.
The produce section will bring
fruit, vegetable, bread, meat,
fish and flower stands together
in one shaded area. Existing
food vendor carts will also be
revamped to reflect various
themes.
All the changes are meant to
improve thefMarket Place and
boost attendance.

from its former home behind city
ball to the library. The sculptW"e
depicts a traditional folk theme
symbolized by two childrert
embracing. · I The city of Okazaki, Japan,
pr~ted the statue to tbe city of
Newpott Beach in 1984 to cele-
brate the relationship of the two
municipalities as sister cities.
The ~akayoshi, or •friend-
ship,• statue was commissioned to
1983 and executed by Eiichi Ishida
from stone supplied by Kan11
Kuroyanagi. ·
To honor the 15th anniversary
or the sister cities' relationship, the-
sculpture is scheduled to be
rededicated at a c:eremony July 25
outside the library.

annual DARE Fair, which celebrates
the end of the 17•week Drug Abuse
Resistance Education program run by
the Newport Beach and Costa Mesa
police departments and the school dis·
trict.
Former Los Angeles Police Depart-
ment Chief Darryl Gates drove down
to survey the scene, and the South·
land's cop band, •Mutual Aid,• was on
hand to provide a musical interlude.
Once a week, officers from Newport
Beach and Costa Mesa venture to the
head of fifth. and slXth-grade classes
to talk to students about the dangers of
drug abuse and how to resist peer
pressure.
"This is the best job I've ever had,
and I've been a cop for 13 yea.rs,• said
an enthusiastic Senior Officer Jess
Gilman of the Cos\r Mesa Police
Department.
Students. too, said they thought the
program worked.
"They teach you to choose who you
hang out with,• Maggie said.
·I learned not so smoke or drink,

May, who led Long Beach State to the NCAA championship!, has won
the Honda-Broderick <:up as the nation's top college female athlete.
Ma~ two-time natid'nal player of 'the year as a setter for the 49ers, becam~ only the second volleyball player to win the award, which was
first given in 1976.
A senior from Costa Mesa, May was the Co-MVP of the NCAA
Final Four as her team completed a 36-0 season, including a title-
match victory over Penn State. .
May was Sllected by a national vote of more than 900 NCAA-mem-
ber schools. The · announcement and presentation of the award was
made at the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year dinner Monday.
Before her outstanding career at Long Beach State, May was a local
star at Newport Harbor, leadmg the Sailors to the CIF State Division I
and mythical national championship as a senior in 1994.
That same year, May was named national player of the year by USA
Today. She was also a two-time state player of the year.

Since that first practice in
1937 the Orange Coast College
football assistant and former high
school coaching legend had
never missed a game or a
practice in 61 years as a
player and coach.
His remarkable
streak, however, came to
an end Iast November.
A detached retina in his
right eye caused Briggs
to miss fow practices
and OCC's game with
Ml San Antonio
College.
"I had been fortunate

step, or bis throat, for that matter.

legend of Paul Briggs.

Defense kept both teams in the game. For
the Giants, outstanding plays included-a
bacihanded stab by Bonn at second base,
an outfield assist by Cameron, who threw
out a base runner at second, and great all-·
around defense by Kretschmar at second
and shortstop and Mu Bouffard in the out-

· For the Cardinals, Jarrett Daniel had
