plan to annex a part of the New-
port Coast development that now
falls under Newport-Mesa Uni-
fied's jurisdiction. ·

of the yet-to-be-built Newport
Coast would be better off in the
Laguna Beach Unified School
District so that all the children m
the area can go to the same
school.
The Newport Coast develop-
ment, one of many being built by
The Irvine Co .. will be located in
the city of Newport Beach. But
because of conflicting bound-
1aries, the development straddles
the Newport-Mesa and Laguna
Beach school districts.
Newport-Mesa Unified School
DtStrict is building a new ele-
mentary school for all the new
children expected to move mto
its portion of the development.
Last spring, the two districts
wrangled for months over a pro-
posal to change the boundaries to
move the entire Newport Coast
development into the Newport-
Mesa school district. At issue
were between 150 and 350 stu-
dents, as well as millions of dol-
lars in developer fees and taxes.

T he crowds have gotten big-
ger, and computer-aided
photography displays have
joined beef and com exhibits,
but at its heart the Orange County Fair
bas remained a family affair.
The fair, which runs July 9-25, celebrates
its 50th year in Costa Mesa this year and has
been aptly themed •Join the Rush," in
recognition of its golden anniversary in the
City of the Arts as well as a celebration of
California's sesquicentennial.

While the locauon of the fa u has
remained the same throughout the last half
century, many other things that have
changed dramatically. Back in 1959, atten-
dance was 101 ,000. ln 1997, an all-time high
of more than 750,000 made it to the fair.
Ticket prices remain a bargain. They
were 75 cents for adults and 10 cents for chil-
dren in 1954. Now they're $6 for adults and
$2 for children.
But there's that constant of fairs every-
where: Amidst all the change, the orange
County Fair continues to cater to families.
"I think that's the one enduring factor,"
sald General Manager Becky Bailey-Findley.

the zero-tolerance policy on
drugs, alcohol and weapons.
However, the penalty seems
ridiculous to anybody. And
what really needs to happen
when somebody is caught for
the first time and/or subsequent
times, is each individual inci-
dent needs to be band.led sepa-
rately by counselors. adminis-
trators and parents to deter-
mine the fair and just discipli-
nary action. Just immediately
sending these kids for Wrac-
tions such as accidentally tak-
ing a pocketknife to school or
causing people ta die driving
drunk in a car, giving them the
same punishment of going to
another school does not make
sense to anybody.
We can't allow the students
to be drunk or carrymg
weapons without taking notice
and giving some kind of disci-
plinary action . But I think it's
right that the school board
review this whole situation.

Trainer says story missed
point of her presentation
Concerning the article titled,
#Hlgh school trainer raises
concerns about athletes'
safety,· by Jessica Garrison m
the June 24 issue of the Daily
Pilot, l would like to say that
this is a terribly written account
of what really happened.
My name is Rebecca Zemla,
and I am the athletic trainer
who is misquoted in this article.
Garrison missed the point of the
presentation despite the fact
that it was made very clear
throughout the meeting, imme-
diately followmg the meeting,
and in a phone call the next
morning The purpose of this
presentation was to increase
awareness of safety issues m all
high schools and to mtroduce
the athletic trainer as the best
professional to care for these
issues. Some topics specific to
Costa Mesa High School were
discussed but were not general-
ized across the clistnct.
At no time during this pre-
sentation was it said that the
athletic trainers m the other
three lugh schools of the New-
port-Mesa Unified School Dis-
trict were unable to do their job.
I feel this was a gross misinter-
pretation of my entire purpose.
The presentation was educa-
tional in nature, not a filing of
complaints.
Several completely incorrect
statements were made through-
out the article. ·
For instance, there is no such
thing as a •heat machine," and
never was it said that a thletic
trainers •diagnose" injuries.
The term diagnosis is used only
by physicians. Athletic trainers
evaluate and offer educated
clinical impressions.
This article is an embarrass-
ment to myself, and l apologize
to the other athletic trainers
within our district. I would be
ashamed to show this article to
the National Athletic Trainers'
Assn. for its lack of proper pre-
sentation of our profession . I
only hope this poor account
does not affect my ability to
gain the respect and assistance
of my colleagues and co-work-•
ers.

per Publishers Assn. this past weeke nd,
including two first-place honors - one in
the front page design category, the other
for feature photo.
The Daily Pilot's 103 Most Influential list
won the second-place a ward in the spetjal
issues category.
The winning photo, above, which cap-
tured two young students playing a math
game, was shot by Photo Editor Marc Mar-
tin. The front page, at right, designed by
Editor William Lobdell and Martin, was
d ominated by a look at Newport Beach 's
effort to lure potential Rose Bowl-bound
teams to the beach city.

creativity and ability to be adventure-

said.
Numero us accolades also went to Daily
Pilot sister papers. The Glendale News-
Press captured 13 awards, the most by any

an Orange County deputy district
attorney charged with providing
ms1de inlonnation to the suspect-
ed leader of a major drug ring has
put up two of its homes m order
to free the jailed lawyer.
A federal judge is considering
whether to release 35-year-old
Bryan Kazarian, who once was
assigned to the Costa Metia gang
unit, on bail. His family pledged
two homes, one of which belongs
to Kazarian in Aliso Viejo. The
total value of the homes is more
than $1.5 million.
U.S. District Court Judge
Arthur Nakazato took the matter
under submission, saying he
would hand down a decision at a
later date.
Kazarian remains in the cus-
tody of federal authonties in San-
ta Ana.
The deputy district attorney
pleaded not guilty Monday to
charges he was a co-conspirator
in a coast-to-coast drug nng.
Kazarian is accused of giving
confidential information about an
investigation to John Ward, 28,
the ring's suspected kingpin.
Kazarian allegedly provided
details about a case mvolVing the
seizure of 106 pounds of chemi-
cals used in malong metharn-
phetamine. The suspect m the
case, Peter Peny, reportedly was
involved in Ward's nng.
Twelve suspects were arrested
earlier this month in connection
with the drug ring. Among those
arrested was Howard Irvine
Coones, the 44-year-old founder
and leader of the Orange County
chapter of the Hells Angels.
Authorities said Coones' friends
are willing to po~t a $2 million
bond to free him from jail.
In analyzing the bail requests
for Kazarian and Coones, the
judge must ensure that the mon-
ey is not linked to the ring's
alleged money-laundering scam.

County when their sports utility
vehicle plunged off a freeway
and landed beneath an over-
pass.
Scott Henderson, 28, and
William Iler Jr., 26, were killed.
A third man in the vehicle,
Robert David Kerr, 31, of Hunt-
ington Beach survived.
Henderson, who authorities
said died instantly, was driving
without a seat belt. Iler, who
was buckled in, died Sunday
from his injuries at Arrowhead
Regional Medical Center in
Colton.
The accident occurred Satur-
day about 10 a .m. when Hen-
derson lost control of his 1996
· Toyota Land Cruiser. The three
friends were beading south-
bound on Interstate 15 when the
vehicle, traveling m the far left

Campa's capture on a weekend
when Costa Mesa police had .

enforcement against drunk dri-
ving. Police said the drivers
weren't exhibiting any signs of
"road rage• but rather wanted
to get her license plate number
and vehicle information. No one
was injured in the chase.
The pursuit began about 9:45
p.m. as Campa left the Taco Bell
parking lot in the 100 block of
East 17th Street. She drove her
1998 Ford pickup truck into a
lane that most drivers use to tum
left onto 17th Street. Instead,
Campa made a right tum and
cut off Omar Cano, 30, of Bur-
bank. She scraped his 1992 Mit-

was traveling at a high rate of

was behind her.•
The chase spilled into New-
port Beach, as the vehicles went
northbound on Irvine Avenue.

pa drifted mto another lane and
struck a 1999 Dodge van driven
by Lois Carr, 48. Carr pulled
over and noticed Cano trailing
the suspect's truck.
Carr also followed and, with
Cano, trapped Campa when she
turned onto Peachtree Lane, a

at Costa Mesa High, but seniors Jamie DeNOewer and Shakena
Henderson earned the nght to call themselves champions nonetheless.
DeNoewer a four-year standout m cross country and track and
field, claimed the biggest individual prize last fall by winning the
CIF Southern Section Division IV cross country crown.
Henderson swept the shot put and discus titles at the Pacific
Coast League Finals. .
Those also collecting individual accolades included junior
Autumn Smith, wbo was the Newport-Mesa District Co-Player of
the Year and first-team All-CIF in basketball. Teammates Jenny
Earnest and Nancy Hatsushi (both second-team All-CCF), and Evelyn Powers (all-district and first-team
all-league), also helped the Mustangs (19-11) reach the CIF ID-A semifinals.
Powers was also all-district and all-league in volleyball, which made the playoffs for the second
straight year, but lost in the first round.

through a 6-2 loss to Garden Groye on Sat-
urday, the Newport Harbor Baseball Asso-
ciation All-Star Bronco "A• team looked
unstoppable, blanking the Anabeim "A•
All-Stars, 11-0.-
• Now this is the type of game were sup-
posed to play," Coach Taras Young said as
his team headed into Monday night's senu-
findls against the Los Alamitos "A• All-
St.a rs.

and our pitching was outstanding lf we
play like Uus we can beat anyone.•
Taylor Young got Newport off on the
right foot, blasting a three-run home run to
center field, scoring Mike McLean and
Dennis Heehan.
Young was just as impressive on the
mound, pitching a complete-game shutout,
Young (three hits) and Heehan {home
run and single) each drove in four runs,
while Patrick Keenan, Morgan Govaan,
Danny SopeT, Shane
Smith and Greg Minor each ddded runs
for Newport.
One fan said it best comparing Sunday's
game to Saturday's .. "U we would have
played like this Saturday, we would have
beaten Garden Grove, 25-0."
Unfortunately, we didn't. .
First-J.nning mistakes and bdd breaks at
the plate were too much for Newport over-
come in Saturday's 6-2 loss.
Newport handed Garden Grove a 2-0
lead in the first inning on a couple of
botched plays in the field.
"That got us off on the wrong foot,•
Young said. "But, our hitting ctidn't get off
on lhe right foot, either.•
Young was referring to the sluggish
Newport bats that could only manage one
hit through four innings, five total.
The smaller than normal hit total did not
necessarily reflect the effectiveness of Gar-

Newport's all-star tournament begins in
Dana Point on July 7.

and regional titles in a 35-year tour-

trumps were drawn, declarer discard-
ing a spade and a diamond from
hand. Now a diamond was led from
dummy. East could win with the long

mond or a sp:idc and declarer scored
the last two tricks with the queen of

When asked why he had taken the
deep heart finesse, Goldman
remarked: "It was nothing. East pre-
