ning of summer, it
gives you the opportu-
nity to play with matches,
and it drips with delightful
hokeyness. And Indepen-
dence Day has the added
advantage of marking the
birth of our nation:

Grand.mas and grandpas who
don't feel like walk.ing in the

the curb and cheer everyone on.
Last year, one family wheeled out
one very sick grand.ma, and peo-
. pie in the pcuade ending up
cheering her.
The half-mile route down
Mariners Dnve takes all of 10
minutes to walk. The 3,000 or so
paraders then spill into Mariners
Park (at the comer of 19th Street
and lrvme Avenue) for a day of
old-fashioned fun and games led
by the ever-youthful Barnaby the
Clown.
And this year, the party in the
park will have an even.bigger
bang For two-and-a-half ·

When 17-year-old Jessica Grove was a
. little girl, she loved watching Mickey
Rooney and Judy Garland films. She
never dreamed she would one day get to
plqy Dorothy, one of Garland's most her-
alded roles, alongside Rooney in "The
Wizard of Oz."' Yet, a.mere 10 years after
en1oylng those movies as a chiltl., the
Columbus, Ohio native ~ starring in a
national tour of the musical, coming to
• the Orange C_ounty Performing Arts Cen-
ter Wednesday through July 18.
•Jt's quite an honor.to be working with
Mickey,• Grove said. "It's an absolutely
incredible experience." ·
Grove's costar, JoAnne WOrley of
•taugh-ln" fame who stars as the
Wicked Witch of the West, couldn't agree
more.
•Mickey.is a national treasure," Wor-•
ley said. "He's an honor to be on stage
with."
The 90-minute stage adaptation o(
the musical features all of the charac-
ters, songs and moments from the clas-
sic 1939 film. In the style of the film, the
story unfolds in a black-and-white set-
ting. After Kansas is struck by the tor-
nado and Dorothy's house lands in
Munchkinland, the stage comes alive
with color.
Grove was chosen from literally hun-
dreds of potential Dorothys do.ring an
open casting call before the show's debut
in Madison Square Garden in 1997.
•tt was unreal when I got the call,"
Grove said. ~1 was watching Rosie
O'Donnell with a friend at the time and I
1ust Jumped up and started screanung, I
was ecstabc."
Grove started performing m cornmu· ·
nity theater with lier family when she
was 3. After taking some dance and
voice lessons, Grove knew she nad
round ner calling and started audition-
ing for roles.
When the opportunity to play Dorothy
came along, she jwnped at the chance.
"l loved 'The Wizard of Oz' when 1
was litUe, • Grove said. "I think every lit-
tle gl.l'l dreams of being Dorothy because
she gets to go to such a wonderful place
and meet such mteresbng kinds of peo-
ple.• ·
One of those "interesbng people" is •
Worley's Wicked Witch of the West. Wor-
ley, who took over the role lrom Llllian
Montevecchi in April1 said there's noth-
ing quite like flymg and wearing green

makeup at the same time. The Wicked
Witch is such a convincing villain, she
said, because everyone can identify with
her.
"She's very realistic because of her
obsession with the ruby slippers,• Worley
said. "She thinks that they will give her
extra magic, just like we all think some-
times that we'll get that extra magi¢ if we
have thdt 'extra something.'
• One of the best morals of 'The Wizard
of Oz' is that whatever you think you
need, you've already had it iilside you all
along."
Grove said that Worley really knows
how to bring humor out of the witch.
• JoAnne dehrutely plays the role for
the laughs." Grove said. ·she's JUSl over
the top. and the audience loves it.•
Worley said the witch is a tar more
humorous character than she gets credit
for.
"The most humorous aspect about her
is that she's so obsessed, and when you
take any obsession that far, it's just plain
funny," Worley said.
While working with Worley and
Rooney may be a dream come ~e f0r
Grove, she said it can sometimes be a
challenge to keep the act fresh every
night.
•After doing 1t for two years, I really
have te try hard to give each audience
the same experience, I try to see
Munchkmland for the first time every
night,• Grove said.
Amazingly, m her two years as
Dorothy, Grove has had to cancel only
two performances - she lost her voice
·once and twisted an ankle the other
time. At the ~nd of this tour, Grove
plans to leave the production and
explore other acting and recording
opportunities, although she someday
hopes to go to college. A national
search is currently underway to find her
replacement.

A8 6b (Knox) which reinstates the requirement for overtime pay after eight
hours in a wortday was passed by the Assembly and is currently in the
Senate. Lastirear, the law was changed to require overtime to. be paid only
after 40 hours worked In a week. Individual employees will not be allowed
any longer to work out a schedule to his or her benefit.
While the bill has more flexibility than the 1998 overtime law allowed, It
wou)d still redaO? an employer's control over scheduling of employees.
According to"jufianne Broyles, director of Insurance and Employee Relations
for the California Chamber of Commerce, bill supporters, "want the • _
employee to be in charge of the work schedule, not the employers.''
AB 60 would set up a system of fines imposed on payroll officers and clerks
as well as against companies. It would require written requests for any
employees wanting time off, creating a paperwork nightmare and shift
enforcement power to the Industrial Welfate Commiss1on, which will decide,
among other things, how many employees work in a unit and who votes on
work schedules. Even under the 1998 overtime rules, a government entity
could not do this •
While 1t pretends to be a protector of the employee, AB60 actually will
make 1t more difficult for the majority of worters to adjust their schedule to
·meet the needs of their famtlies and the unplanned demands that are normal
in everyday hfe. Individual employees will not have the right to negotiate their
schedules, as they need. Eighty-eight percent of the .workforce is non-union
and will be forced to again work under unfavorable and inflexible ~ulations.
As expected AB 60 is supported by labor unions wishing to keep alternative
scheduling exclusive to union worters.
Employers and empk>yees wishing to maintain individual rights of
negotiation U1ould express their opposition of AB 60 to state senators and
Governor Davis.

Sidney Binder, 72, of Irvine

Binder faces a maximum of two
years in state prison when he is
·sentenced on Aug. 27.
Authorities said Binder operat-
ed a Newport Center Drive busi-
ness called Diversified Tax Ser-
vi~e. Between January 1990 and
August_1~95, Binder convinced
clients, most of whom were elder·
ly. to invest in oil wells by provid-
ing tax shelters. A few victims
sunk more than $100,000 into the
pro pects, not realizing that some'
of· the wells didn't exist. There
were some active oU wells but
they produced very little in return
to cover clients investments. :
Deputy Dist. Atty. Jimmie Har-
ns estimates there were more
thdn 200 victims who lost a
cumulative total of $5 million.
Customers began to become
suspicious in late 1995. Binder's
· business :was collapsing as he
was rapidly losing motley..
"People became leery of the
company's a~tivities," Harris
said. "He ran out of money in the
end."
Binder was convicted of mail
fraud in 1985 and served two
years 10 federal prison.
One of Binder's partners, Wel-
don Roberts, 59, of Texas has
been charged with 13 counts or
selling fraudulent stocks. He is

As a senior, DeNoewer won her division at
the Orange County Championships and
captured the Division N title at the Southern
Section meet to help her team finish fifth. She
then ran fourth in Fresno.
•Running seems to be the only thing l've
found that reaches down into me," said
DeNoewer, who transferred her passion to the
track in the spring.
As a junior, she wu third ln the J,600meters
at the PCL Finals and wu on the ~e's
1,600 relay title team. Movtbg on to the Division
ID section finals, she WU sixth in the 1,600 and
helped the relay team ftnlsb fourth. .
In her last PCL Finals llMM1l. she WU second
in the 800 and third in the 1,600 then ftnJlhe(1
second in the 1,600 and third in the 800 at CIP
Division ID Finills, advancing to the SoutberD
Section Masters Meet in both events.
She is the fourth Costa Mesa senior girl to
earn ~e ~onor since the Daily Pilot began •

in 1992.

the junior tennis
scene as the area's latest
phenom, his goals included
attending Stanford, playing on
the pro tour and going to
medical school ·
Eight years later, the former
Newport Harbor High standout
from the Class of 1996 is a year
away from 91"aduabng Wlth a
premed degree from Stanford
and is posturing himself
academically to begin med
school in September of 2001,
a date Abrams would like to ·
delay as long as possible.
Before he commits to his
scholastic dream, Abrams would
like to return to places like
Roland Garros and Wunbledon
-only this time as a member of
the Association of Tennis
Professionals' Tour.
When most of his
Harbor classmates were
experiencmg typical
seruor years, Abrams,
a former U.S. national
team member, was
traveling the world .. In
addition to graduating·
with honors, he was
competing in international
Junior events in Brazil,
Paraguay, Costa Rica,
Venezuela, Italy, ·
Belgium, France and
England.
Abrams' top-20 ranking in the
International Tennis Federation
-Utat year opened the door for
invitations to play at the French
Open and Wimbledon junior
tournaments.
•It was great to see how those
(pros) bit the ball and, I felt,
hopefully that will be the way I
can hit someday,• Abrams said
of those Grand Slam moments
three years ago.
Not far from those type of
strokes now, Abrams, one of the
top juniors ever to come out of
the Newport-Mesa community,
should be a contender for the
NCAA men's singles title next
year.

Early in his junior career,
Abrams, now 6-foot-5, 185
pounds, blew most of tus
opponents off the court with a
big serve, heated ground strokes
and unretumable pasSing shots.
At age 14, Abrams bad his serve
clocked at 118 mph and was
ranked No. 1 in the nation, but
along with the success came
more press clippings and

pressure.

Abrams made his junior Grand
Slam debut at the 1993 U.S. n
Open. In 1992, he won three
prestigious events: The Easter .. •
Bowl (boys 14s), U.S. National
Hard Courts and U.S. National
Clay Courts.
But after wmning an
international tournament (in the
16s) at the Port Washington
(NY.) Open in December 1993,
Abrams went more than 18
months wtthout a title.

Palmer Tenrus Academy in
Tampa, Aa .• tus junior year and
did not play high school tennis,
returned to the winners' circle in
June 1995 when he captured the
boys 18s title at the Southern

in a Pac 10 match, with the Bru-
ins at the time ranked No. 1 in
the country, served as one of the
1999 highlights.
