KARL S<. tiWl ILI I< !h1y Pio! COSTA MESA The familiar rides of bygone days hdve been overshadowed by newer and more intimidating · neighbors at the Orange County Fair. Sure, you can find the familiar . standbys -the fems wheel, the cdfouselr the tea cups. But they dre surrounded by stomacb- churrung terrors with names like Chaos, Spin Out and Orbiter. The three dre among a doien rides deemed frightening enough to warrant a free MWeek- end Wamor· T-shirt for riders danng enough to nde six in one day. The only red! question for the mostly teendge nder'> was which ride was most fnghterung. For Jeremy, 13, of San Diego, the Inverter parked the most thnlls The nde fc>rm•d dozens mto the cllI along the same orbit as d ferris wheel, except they were on the wrong side of the nm and would be turnrd upside down as the ride redched the top of its arc · But Jeremy chdnged his opin- ion as he rode the Zipper, which spun even more quickly thdn the Inverter. "I've changed my rrund. This ride lS the scan est yet,· he said. ":Lots of rotating dnd flippmg . • . • • Jeremy Smith, 14, of Costa Mesa, thought he'd seen every- thing unW he boarded Chaos, a nde that simultaneously spins, flips, elevates and lowers riders m a sickeningly unpredictable senes of movements. · "That lhlng really screwed me up,· Smith said, as he staggered out the exit. "It spins you around reaUy fast and you go down and almost hit the ground and then they Jerk you back up. It's way scary." · For B~n Hooker, 15, of Costa Mesa, the most fearsome ride wa Evolution, a towering con- traption that spun riders 96 feet in the air. Riders sat m' a circle of out- ward-facing chairs. The circle spun while a huge, swing arm hoisted the whole works upwdl'd. The effect was of being a stone in a slingshot. · •1t was scary as hell," Hooker said. "Especially when they hang Riders on Evolu- tion scream and hang on Ught as they are spun around while rolling upside down at the Orange County Fair on Sunday. DON LEACH I DAILY PllOT you upside down and you can see the whole fairground." His fnend, Jaquie·Delzer, 11, agreed. "Evolution was scariest because you sit upside down and you are being held by just the bars. It's better than Spin Out and Zipper," Delzer said I've been known to eat a 'lot, bu(l don•t think I could polish off one of those things. ALGRIEGO ~ of Huntington Beach, after seeing a 10-pound bun ,, bargainoftheday Ride till you ... $20 Step right up: Buy a $20 ride wristband by 7 p.m and you get unhm1ted ride access until midnight, if you can stand it. One man finds Chaos is bad, but Evolution is worse S ometirnes ed.Jtors dsk me to do things I would never do 1f my job didn't depend 'Qn it. GoU'lg to the Orange • County Fair to ride the 12 scdri- est rides in an afte rnoon is one 'Ot those My assignment was simple: Board the scary ndes dfld report on them. • I ignored the cotton candy, brushed past the farm animals Y shunned the hawkers implor- ):r\g me to win a stuffed arumaJ. :There was work to be done. • The first nde I found was Chaos. It is a nng of outward- facing chaus that fhp around as l.He ring rotates sickerungly. I .thought Chaos was more stom-. ach-cbuming than fun because I ·oouldn't predict the direction I'd ·" SIM}t,-U, FilNll •u Flt1fas C..rt.ct1ts. lne. be Jerked in next. It isn't a ride to try after lunch. Next up was the Inverter, which spins riders through a verticdl orbit and dangles them upside-down. I thought it was scary. especially while hanging upside down and reading litter on the ground, but it was over in JUSt more than a nunute. Kamikaze was be~er. It works the same as the Inverter except you s1t m an enclosed car, so it seems safer. But Kamikaze is faster than the Inverter, so the ride is more exhilarating After three tummy-twisters, I needed a break so I hopped on the Hydro-Slide, a standard wooden boat nde. The nde sends passengers plunging REPORTER'S NOTEBOOK karl schweizer down two water-lilled canals, splashlng them. It was refresh- ing, but not scary. I saw small children exiting the nde wtth nary a whlmper. I would have got on the Hi Miler, the only roller coaster at the fair, but 1t broke as J stood m line. It doesn't look too scary. I' lS small roller coaster with no twists and zero upside-down action. In fact, lf you want a frighterung roller coaster, skip the local fairs and head to Magic Mountain. I moved on to Spin Out, another spmrung, gyrating ride a la Chaos Spm Out proved run, though the nde was too short at · JUSl more than a minute. (Those fair attendants need to keep people up there for at least two minutes so they can learn what is scary about their ride) I also rode Evolution, Top Spin dlld the Zipper. Zipper was a load of fun, but I httve to give Evolution my vote for the most frightening ride . Like Chaos, you sit in a ring, but tlus ring raises 96 feet in the air. I found myself high in the all', banging upside down, watching the Earthlings appear to spin about. As for Top Spm, I recommend dvo1ding it unless you have an iron stomach. The nde flips peo- ple head over heels in forward and reverse. The flipping is fast and violent. The ride is sort of fun, but it is mainly a nausea inducer. • KARL SCHWEIZER 1s a reporter for Daily Pilot's sister publkation Our Times Ontario. • ' . Re Painting?
