raise the money so second-
graders can go to the aquarium,
and -day after day -in class-
rooms at Andersen Elementary
School, quietly help their chil-
dren's teachers.
But Uus summer, a group of
parents have assumed a new
role: they are working to oust a
teacher.
Last month, more than 70 of
them, many with historically deep
roots of support for their children's
teachers, took the unusual step of
circulating a petition _ca.lijng for
the removal of one second-grade
teacher, 1hoa Wood.
OIStnct officials, citing state
confidentiality laws, said they
could not comment on the
specifics of the case except to say
that they are aware of parent
concerns and are investigating
them.
In their petitiQn, parents said
they didn't believe that Wood, a
tenured teacher with a PhD and

After droeping to 69 degrees overnight through-
out Newport-MeScl, the temperatures rose to 84
degrees in Balboa, Corona del Mar and Costa Mesa.
It was a tad cooler -81 -m Newport Beach and
Newport Coast.
But any of those reading would have been a
break from inland temper~tures, where it hit a high
or 94 in Anaheun and will reach 90 again today.
According to Joe Dandrea, meteorologist with the
National Weather Service, the culpnl for this heat
and bu.nudity is high pressure over the region IIllXed
with motsture from the Gtilf of Mexico. •1 think
tomorrow will be similar and uncomfortable for
many,• he said.
Dandrea said Southern Calif omia was not the
only victun of the East Coast •style• weather, the
entire region is. •A strong upper level htgh pressure
system over all of the southwestern U.S. lS affecting
the temp<-rature. • Dandrea said.
Dandrea said Ora,nge County won't have to wdit
long for relief. Temperature. should be dropping by
midweek, as much as five to seven degrees. ·

Today I shall recognize the pro-
f ess1onal gamblers of Balboa dur-
ing the '20s and '30s. They were
an important part of our town.
A saying attrlt)uted to W.C.
Fields goes something like:
•Never give a sucker an even
break.• In Balboa, our gamblers
carried this concept to ridiculous
extremes. For example, the flash-
er game was roulette 'Without the
wheel. Instead, a small motor
under the operator's control spun
the numbers flashed across the
screen. Thus the name "flasher,•
not to be confused with one who
exposes his private parts to
unsuspecting females.
As everyone knows, the
roulette wheel has two house
numbers, 'Zero and doublP zero,
which insure that il you play long
enough the house will have all
your money. In the flasher games,
the house not only had zero and

both active in the Newport Harbor
Yacht Club.
Mrs. Howe was also adlve m
Girl Scouts, as the founding presi-
dent of the Newport Beach Coun-
cil. As a member of the Newport
Beach Assistance League, she
volunteered in the Thrift Shop as
the "Book Lady." During World
War ll, she was also active with
the Red Cross and Aircraft Warn-
ing SeMce. Mrs Howe was pres-
ident of Fnends of the Library and
a Gray Lady at H0c1g Hospital.
Mrs: Howe is SWVlved by a
son, Hubbard "Bard" Howe of
Reno, Nev.; a daughter, Sheila
Howe McCallwn or La Qwnta; SlX
grandchildren; and 11 great-
grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held
at St. James Episcopcil Church m
Newport Beach on July 23 at 4 p.m.

Nadine Anne Sansone, wile of
former Newport Beach Mayor
Phil Sansone, died July 9 of natur-
al causes after a long illness. She
was 77.
Born March 28, 1922, in Gou-
verneur, N.Y., Mrs. Sansone grad-
uated from West Texas School of
Business and was employed for
several yea.rs as an auditor for
Montgomery Ward in Washing-
ton, D.C., Pittsburgh, Pa. and
Spnngfield, Mass.
She married Phll Sansone, a
career Air Force officer, on Nov.
11, 1942, after his return from h1.s
first World War II overseas asSign-
ment.
Dunng her husband's assign-
ment to domestic and foreign mil-
it81"}' bases, Mrs. Sansone was
active as a Red Cross volunteer
and was involved in special edu-
cational programs for children of

cash, which would be illegal
gambling. Instead you were paid
off in mints, which the merchant
would redeem at 50 cents on the
do Dar.
The punch boards were the
worst npoff of all. For example,
take a $25 board. Theoretically, ·
there was a little piece of paper
in that board which, for your
dune, if punched out, paid you
$25. Not a bad return on a 10-
cent mvestment. Of course, if
you stopped and counted, you
would find out that it would take
$50 to punch out all those little

Costa Mesa couple who took

"You see, we were supposed

in the 1990s, run Mang IS still
preparing to make the biggest
serve of bis distinguished career.
Mang, one of the game's top
promoters and drumbeaters, has
tennis roots as deep as anybody
in the Newport-Mesa community
and a coaching background as
impressive as anyone m the CIF
Southern Section.
· But Mang, who has
_ launched the National
High School Tennis
All-J\merican Fowidation,
is ready for his final, and
perhaps most important,
legacy.
CdM, was a member of the
seeding committee for the
prestigious Ojai Tournament, as
well as the ClF team and
individual championships, for
eight years.
Mang, who stepped down as
CclM's girls coach last fall after
Jour years, was president of the
Caillonua Coaches' Association in ~
1983, and was the association's
Coach of the Year in 1982. Mang
was also Western States Coach of •
the Year and runner-up for
National Coach of the Year honors
that year when Prince sponsored
the high school
All-American teams.
